I can't find the option for text highlighting when editing an RTF file in Studio 2011 SP2 while it does exist for DOC and DOCX formats. Is this option not available for RTS files?

Hi Artem, Highlighting (if you mean the one form QuickInsert list) is not available for rtf even in 2017 version. Furthermore, you still cannot assign a shortcut to automate this command (even for those formats that support highlighting).
As a workaround, you can add a comment (Ctrl+Shift+N) with just one space in it. This invokes pale yellow highlighting. Then you can filter segments "with comments" if need be.
