In particular, as with other goods, NAFTA lowers trade barriers on agricultural products. While agricultural non-tariff barriers (quotas) are eliminated, the countries are still permitted to maintain tariff rate quotas for certain listed products. Typically a tariff rate quota sets a low initial tariff for imports that do not exceed a fixed quantity, and a higher tariff for imports that exceed that quantity. The countries also agreed to eliminate many agricultural export subsidies. |
