I can't think of anything other than bird biotope for this term but I'm not getting much confirmation from the net. Has anyone any other suggestions?

I think a literal translation may be better in this case. Translating 'avifaune' as 'bird' does not convey enough of the meaning (avifauna = all the birds in a particular region rather than birds in general). I'm assuming the text is referring to an area or habitat where all local bird species are present.
