INDEXED COLOUR
A colour system that uses information from a file or from software as a pointer to look-up table of colours rather than specifying a colour directly. Colour specified from a 24-bit palette but displayed in an 8-bit system is indexed colour.
Difficult to know whether this is what you're after or not, but it seems feasible (I think!).
