English to Portuguese: Hermann the Irascible, by Saki (excerpt) General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English It was in the second decade of the Twentieth Century, after the Great Plague had devastated England, that Hermann the Irascible, nicknamed also the Wise, sat on the British throne. The Mortal Sickness had swept away the entire Royal Family, unto the third and fourth generations, and thus it came to pass that Hermann the Fourteenth of Saxe-Drachsen-Wachtelstein, who had stood thirtieth in the order of succession, found himself one day ruler of the British dominions within and beyond the seas. He was one of the unexpected things that happen in politics, and he happened with great thoroughness. In many ways he was the most progressive monarch who had sat on an important throne; before people knew where they were, they were somewhere else. Even his Ministers, progressive though they were by tradition, found it difficult to keep pace with his legislative suggestions.

Nessa conjuntura global do mundo, figuras específicas ganham proeminência: o cientista, o hacker e o ativista.
Translation - English The popular insurgencies the world saw during the 1960's and the technological advances the 1970's brought, being the personal computer the most important to our purposes, establish the onset of a paradigm shift that marks our present day and will mark our future, reconfiguring human reality as in no other moment in History. Man-machine interaction becomes intimate, and the emergence of the internet speeds the pace of globalization. A new world system of domination rises: the Empire, as theorized by Hardt and Negri.
In this global conjuncture of the world, specific actors come into play: the scientist, the hacker and the activist. In science-fiction literature, they join the cyborg, a key player in the cyberpunk subgenre and in Donna Haraway's cyborg theory: she kidnaps him from the military and the patriarchy to reassemble him as a post-feminist utopian myth. By merging the cyborg myth with the Hacker Ethic, our goal is to defend the hacktivist myth as fundamental to challenge the sovereignty of the Empire.
