Waking up from Oblivion
There is a crime here beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success.

Think about waking up one day and finding that everything you count on in your life is gone. All the basic amenities that you expect in a first world nation have disappeared: no clean water, no housing, no food, no communication, no jobs, and no transportation. Nothing. For most of us, this is simply unimaginable. Most disasters around us are relatively isolated events. If your house burns down, you can still go to your neighbor’s for shelter. If a tornado destroys your town, then you and your neighbors can get help in the next town. But what happens when the next house, the next town, and the next city, for hundreds of miles in all directions, are also gone? When the very fabric of your community has been destroyed?
That is what happened in the Gulf Coast region in the fall of 2005 due to Hurricane Katrina and the failure of the levees in New Orleans.
We must never forget this fact: it was not the hurricane that caused this disaster. It was the levee failures and the ongoing ecological destruction in the Gulf. This was the latest in a long history of largely invisible disasters of neglect in these communities. To me the levees became a symbol of the way that the corruption and arrogance of governments disregards the most vulnerable people.
The government had lost control. Everything disappeared underwater, leaving thousands to die or fend for themselves. In the bleak early days, there were no services, and little emergency aid was being rendered due to law enforcement’s preoccupation with maintaining order. On one hand, it was chaos, with confused and desperate people trying to get out to safety. On the other hand, it was true anarchy: people with nothing, waiting for no one to help them, began to aid themselves and each other amid the devastation.
From the destruction and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina emerged an organization called the Common Ground Collective that was built on hope, dedication, and solidarity. The story of Common Ground is a story of ordinary people compelled to act for justice in an extraordinary situation.
I have written these words to answer questions (some of them my own) about this organization. What brought me to New Orleans? What brought others? What was our part in the battle for justice in that city? How did we all struggle to resist, to rebuild, to stop the disasters perpetuated in historically marginalized communities?1 I also want to ask questions that may not have answers, but need to be asked.
In the first three years of the Common Ground Collective, over twenty-three thousand mostly middle-class and white volunteers aided communities that most had no direct connection to apart from the bond of humanity. What impacts did we have on the future of the communities in the Gulf?
These are my observations and feelings about my involvement in the formation of the Common Ground Collective in its rapid path from an idea to being the largest anarchist-influenced organization in modern U.S. history. It was an organization built in unstable surroundings, in constant, sometimes chaotic, evolution. As Bill Ayers once noted: “Memory is a motherfucker” I cannot remember everything that happened on the ground, everyone who participated, or even what I had for breakfast most days. But some vivid images and intense feelings, from feeding people to the flower that pushed up through the concrete, will stay with me for the rest of my life.
From Common Ground’s tumultuous beginnings, people (especially radicals and anarchists like me) came to New Orleans with no prior experience in disaster response. Common Ground went on to engage in protracted social justice struggles side by side with New Orleans residents, First Nations peoples and other members of civil society to regain dignity and control over their lives. Our aims were to aid people in the short term, and for those of us from the outside to support historically marginalized communities in the Gulf in building power for long-term social and political change.
These people had a small chance for justice. In the catastrophe, the state lost its grasp, and some of the walls they had built to keep people out came crashing down. Many who had lost everything were angry and desperate. What else could the state do to them? They could either give up or fight. Many chose to fight.
At the Common Ground Collective we knew from the beginning that we did not need the permission of the state or its resources. We did not need it at all. We only needed the willingness to do it all ourselves—together.
The people who presume to have Power tell us an arrogant fable about how the working class and poor do not have time or interest in solving their own problems.2 That is a lie. In New Orleans I witnessed what happens when people take action for their lives in a struggle for self-determination. With support from small organizations like ours, communities all over the region fought on many levels to have access to basic health care, to reopen their schools, to have decent jobs, to return to their homes and neighborhoods, and ultimately to decide their own fates.
As I saw it, if there was ever a time and place for those of us with any amount of resources to put our principled political theories into action, this was it. My political and personal history led me to the Gulf. I went to aid comrades of many years that I greatly loved and respected. I also went to support the people, already made invisible by social indifference, who had everything taken away, first by the storm, second by the failure of the levees, and third by the failure of unresponsive governments.
I want to illustrate how our relief work, based in radical social analysis summed up in the slogan “Solidarity Not Charity,” was tied into engaging in broader community justice struggles against deep-rooted racism, private developers, and bad government.
I did not go to the Gulf to be a savior; that was against my principles. Hell, I wasn’t even absolutely sure ofwhat I had gotten into when the storms rolled back out into the Gulf, leaving water everywhere. I was struggling to keep my balance in the turbulence. I thought a lot about the idea of “white saviors” on my way into New Orleans right after the levee failures, and during the weeks that followed. It was a mindset that permeated government agencies, the Red Cross, the media, insensitive white rescuers, too many religious organizations, and even some of Common Ground’s own volunteers. It was an unstated viewpoint that coiled around every aspect of aid within the region, even as many of us struggled against it.
It was our time to cast doubt aside and say: we can and we will do this. As we built more together, we began to realize that, as June Jordan said, “We are the ones we have been waiting for”
This is my piece of the truth.

С другой — настоящая анархия: люди, потерявшие всё, не ожидающие помощи ни от кого, начали заботиться о себе и друг друге самостоятельно посреди разрухи.
На месте, испытавшем разрушительную мощь урагана Катрина и его последствия, возникла организация под названием коллектив «Common Ground» (Общая земля), которая была основана на надежде, самоотверженности и солидарности. История «Common Ground» — это история обычных людей, вынужденных действовать ради достижения справедливости в чрезвычайной ситуации.
Я пишу эти строки для того, чтобы ответить на вопросы (часть из которых задаю себе сам) об этой организации. Что привело меня в Новый Орлеан? Что привело туда других людей? Какую роль мы сыграли в битве за справедливость в этом городе? I was born in Barnaul in 1992, and when I was 6, I started learning English.
In 2009, I entered a local college (they are called "universities" in Russia) to study the theory and practice of translation and interpreting.
2013 was the year of first opportunities for my career. I was hired by OOO Turimpex (a Russian tour operator) to accompany foreign tourists on their hiking/horse-riding/whitewater rafting tours. In November I traveled to ICOFOM annual conference in Tunis, Tunisia, and provided consecutive interpreting services for the Russian panel.
2014 was my graduation year. I got to meet professional translators (both in-house and freelance), and decided to live the life of a freelancer. Daria Kritskaya and Sergey Krotov made a massive impact on my professional development in my fledging period and were always someone on whom I could rely.
Since then I have been honing my skills and techniques, venturing in different areas of translation - from Medicine to Videogaming - and always trying to do my best.
Like any human being, I am somewhat prone to mistakes, but I am at all times dedicated to quality and timeliness. Ensuring consistency of quality and translations as such is also a strength of mine.
I am pretty sure, my deeds, i. e. my translations, will prove my expertise better than my words (on second thought, they are my deeds, right?)
