Founded in Washington, D.C. in 1957, the Association today has a membership of over 150 interpreters and translators. They are based in many countries of the Western Hemisphere -- Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Netherlands, Antilles, Peru, the United States, Uruguay, Venezuela -- and in Europe, Chad and Japan as well. Many of them are permanently employed by international organizations, government agencies and universities; the others work on a free-lance basis.
