I've had a look at the alchemysoftware.com website and must admit that I can't figure out what the difference is between Alchemy CATALYST and Alchemy PUBLISHER.

Can anyone here enlighten me?

Michael

Catalyst II for software applications - Publisher 3.0 for document types Mar 12, 2015

This question was answered in ProZ:

If you compare the features of Catalyst II and Publisher 3.0 in the current Alchemy website you'll see this basic difference as well.

Publisher = CAT tool + Catalyst = software localisation tool Mar 12, 2015

Thanks Liselotte!

So basically Publisher is their CAT tool and Catalyst their software localisation tool.

Here's what Jeff had to say about it in the thread you mentioned:

Jeff Allen wrote:

Catalyst is basically the software localization TM tool. it supports about 200 file formats and is focused on visually displaying the content in software interfaces and webpage formats in the parallel content manner.

Publisher was introduced to handle the traditionnally offline print and desktop publishing formats. So it supports Word (probably also Excel), Adobe Indesign, Quark Xpress, Adobe Framemaker.

Catalyst and Publisher are complementary, although I do recall there are some overlapping supported formats. that should be documented in the software features info on the website.

Jeff

Have you (or anyone else reading this) used either of them? Are they any good? How does Alchemy CATALYST 11 compare to, say, Passolo 2015 (or other software localisation tools)? How does Alchemy PUBLISHER 3.0 compare to memoQ/Studio/CafeTran,DVX3, Wordfast, etc. (or other CAT tools)?

This (from the Alchemy website) definitely sounds interesting:

"Alchemy PUBLISHER uses object-oriented Translation Memory technology. This differs substantially from text-based TM products. Alchemy PUBLISHER's powerful Translation Memory not only stores text segments for re-use but also a document's layout, formatting, graphics and contextual information. This guarantees not only near-perfect translations re-use, but significant savings in the post-translation Desktop Publishing (DTP) and Quality Assurance (QA) testing." (http://www.alchemysoftware.com/products/alchemy_publisher.html ) (sounds kind of like Transit)

Update! Alchemy Publisher discontinued, merged with Catalyst 11. Mar 15, 2015

In reply to my email …
Hello!

I've had a look at your website and must admit that I can't figure out what the difference actually is between Alchemy CATALYST and Alchemy PUBLISHER.

I do a lot of technical/IT translations (in my favourite CAT tool: CafeTran), but have recently started looking into software specialised in localisation, which led me to things like Passolo, and your software.

Kind regards,

Michael

… someone from Alchemy wrote me:
Hi Michael,

Thanks for your query.

We have discontinued Alchemy Publisher as a standalone product. It was our solution for documentation formats.

We have instead included documentation solutions in Catalyst 11 – so Catalyst and Publisher are now essentially merged.

I can arrange a 7-day trial license for you if you are interested.

Thanks,

Ailís

I've taken her up on her offer and am going to have a look at the program. I do find it a little worrying that Ailís’s email ended with:
