I would like to make short clips from some YouTube videos and (possibly) CDs, to show in a presentation. Can anyone recommend software for this, preferably free?

Google is your friend Feb 2, 2020

In order to get MP3 files from Youtube google for +rip +mp3 +youtube

In order to get MP3 files from CD google for +rip +mp3 +cd

In order to cut/edit the resulting MP3 files use Windows' Media Player.
Google for "Windows Media Player" +cut

But think of copyright issues!

Programs to download Youtube videos come and go, but this one works for me at this moment:
https://www.yourvideofile.org/ (it's an add-on for Firefox)

To copy music from music CDs, you need a ripper. This one works fine for me:
https://www.freerip.com

To create new videos from video and audio source files, you need a video editor, but I'm not aware of a free (or cheap) one that is currently available (unless you're using Windows 95). You can google for free+video+editor, but be warned: you're going to be installing a whole bunch of "free" programs only to discover that they are really demo versions with an extremely short trial. Also, in my experience, installing video editors can really mess up your computer, even the reliable, trustworthy ones. So, google for online+video+editor as well.

Hello Susan,

With 4K Video Downloader ( https://www.4kdownload.com/products/product-videodownloader ) and VLC ( https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.fr.html ) I think you have what you need.

If then you just need to define a start and an end point for your clips, have a look at : http://www.videotool.net/

For more sophisticated video edition, I'm afraid that Samuel is right.

If the purpose is focused to audio files, you really need Audacity ( https://www.audacityteam.org/ )

Hope this helps!

Thanks... Feb 2, 2020

... to everybody for great suggestions.
I don't think there's a copyright problem, since I am going to use these clips for an educational presentation for a non-profit organization and I am not being paid for it.

Susan

Try out such (and other) software in a sandbox Feb 3, 2020

THE solution for such issues is the sandbox of Windows 10. Open the sandbox, install and try-out whatever software you want, then close the sandbox. Nothing will remain, because the sandbox is a competely separate virtual machine.

The sandbox is based on Hyper-V. Hyper-V machines run side-by-side with the "main" Windows, actually they use a second Windows instance.
OTOH, other virtual machines like VirtualBox or VMWare machines run as guests underneath of Windows and thus can influence Windows or even have a detrimental effect on it.

Sandbox and Hyper-V are factory-built-in features of Windows 10. AFAIK Hyper-V was part of Windows 8.1 already, but sandbox is rather new. Anyway, no installation is needed, some clicks for activation will do. However, certain "cheap" or outdated computers are not Hyper-V-enabled. For How-To's google for sandbox windows enable.

In your country the Fair Use doctrine holds.
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use (esp. "Nature of the copyrighted work")

To download from Youtube, Feb 3, 2020

you can use the ss command. Just put cursor after www. => type ss => press Enter.

For example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqyziA30whE ====> https://www.ssyoutube.com/watch?v=cqyziA30whE

If downloading is allowed, you can choose the quality and download the video. If not, you won't be able to download it. This prevents you from copyright issues.

Another site for cutting youtube videos is http://cut-video.com/
It treats the copyright issues the same way: if legal, you can cut; if not, you can't.
Just paste the youtube video link to the Search field and press Enter. Click on the video you need (normally it should go first, leftmost). If the video is for free distribution, you will see the cut/download options. If you cannot see those options (buttons), it means the video owner does not want you to do so.

Also, you can use Windows tools to trim videos. I am not sure about English Windows, but in Russian it works this way: right click an mp4 file => Open with => Photos => Edit&Create => Cut
Then put the left white circle at the beginning of your desired clip and the right circle to the end of your clip. Use the blue circle marker to scroll through the clip.
Then press Save as.

This is how you can download and cut videos.

What regards making videos from clips, I use DaVinci Resolve (https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/ru/products/davinciresolve/). The software is for free (weirdly — because it looks very professional). However it is over 1.3GB in zip archive.
A simpler choice would be https://filmora.wondershare.net/filmora-video-editor.html

I have to contradict you there. The operator of ssyoutube.com is totally independent from Youtube and chose a similarly looking domain name (honi soit qui mal y pense). In it's FAQs any liability regarding copyright is excluded. Thus, your "Downloading is allowed" should read "Downloading is technically possible via this service, be it illegal or not".

Just read Youtube's terms of usage.

BTW, nobody can know whether the Fair Use doctrine allows a certain download because this depends on the details of the planned usage.

You’re welcome Feb 4, 2020

Actually, Susan Welsh did not mention downloading at all. Neither she asked how to grab audio, nor video. As far as I can see, the question was about making clips from videos. I don't know what mp3 grabbing/downloading or sandbox got to do with making clips...

Just don't read the first half of my message. Read from What regards making videos from clips...

ss method of downloading a YouTube video is NO GOOD Mar 5, 2020

For the record:

This method links to a site that proceeded to grab Firefox and would not let loose. I ran Malwarebytes and Windows Defender scans, but no problem was found. However the site would not close and demanded that I "reinstall Firefox," which I think was a scam. Finally it stopped when I rebooted.

Better use one of the other methods.

I was unable to get the Sandbox to work properly. I need to study the help screens more closely.

I used VideoPad Video editor to make the clips. It worked, but took me a very long time. The instructions are poor and you can't download them -- you have to watch little instructional videos (over and over again, if you run into problems, which I did).

Next I'll try the Windows function to make clips.

Thanks everybody for your help.

I just found out that Microsoft PowerPoint 2019 has a Trim Video function that seems to do this nicely!
