From "Early Variations in White Matter Microstructure and Depression Outcome in Adolescents With Subthreshold Depression":

"Neuroimaging and clinical data were obtained from a large sample of community adolescents recruited around age 14 in middle schools from eight sites in four European countries (www.imagen-europe.com). A detailed description of recruitment and assessment procedures, with exclusion and inclusion criteria, has been published elsewhere (14)."

What is the meaning of "community adolescents"? Does it mean that they all belong to some typical "school community", spend their time in typical school environments? A boy/girl of the same age but belonging to a shepherd community in Afghanistan would not fit this "group"? Or does it mean "any adolescent that lives in any kind of community"?

I want to translate this sentence into Russian, and cannot understand the precise meaning.

The abstract of the article uses the term "community-based cohort":

"Adolescents with subthreshold depression (N=96) and healthy control subjects (N=336) drawn from a community-based cohort were compared using diffusion tensor imaging and whole brain tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) at age 14 to assess white matter microstructure."

Что такое "adolescents" - понятно, поэтому проблема только в "community-based".

"The nuance is always that the data is derived from the ***general population, not a clinical (hospital based) population***. It has nothing to do with particular cities or regions".

То есть речь идёт не о подростках из какого-то конкретного города или региона, а о подростках, которые не принадлежат к числу "hospital based population". Соответственно "community adolescents" - это противопоставление "hospital based".

И ещё пояснение от другого участника спора (эпидемиолога):
"A "community" can be any more or less geographically defined/confined group: a city, a country, a region, a particular part of a city, a population group with characteristics that make them part of a community (ethnicity, occupation, schoolchildren, etc). ***But the main point about commmunity-based studies is that the population being studied is NOT a clinical or hospital based group***".

И ещё:
"Community-based studies recruit subjects from the general population - usually a subgroup or "community" - rather than from a clinical/hospital population".

То есть люди, отобранные для исследования и классифицированные как "community-based", обычно проживают на одной и той территории (город и т.п.), но обычно - не значит обязательно, и не это главное. А главное заключается в том, что они не являются пациентами, то есть они - не "hospital based".
