Source text - English Birds of Eden Free Flight Sanctuary By Isabel Wentzel Introduction Imagine a single birdcage spanning an entire forest valley. An unrealistic dream? Well, come to the Garden Route in South Africa and see for yourself. This is the world’s largest free flight aviary, the new Birds of Eden Bird Sanctuary situated outside Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape, South Africa. This sanctuary opened its gates to the public on December 15, 2005 and houses approximately 3000 birds of 220 different species from different continents. The concept This unique undertaking was initiated and developed by Tony Blignaut, CEO of the Monkey land Primate Sanctuary adjacent to the new aviary. Monkeyland is 12 hectare of indigenous forest encircled by high electric fences where 12 species of previously caged primates from across the world roam at will. This forest however did not allow for the smaller species of the miniature monkeys and the idea to build another sanctuary where the smaller primates incorporated with birds could find safety, developed. After raising the necessary funds, the concept of Birds of Eden was born. The motivation behind the sanctuary was to create a free, although enclosed, natural environment into which some marmosets and tamarins, as well as previously caged birds of different species could be released. The main aim was to focus on mostly African species, but to also allow for a variety of pet birds to be offered a better life in this ‘free’ but safe environment. Design The single span aviary covers a ground space of 2.1761 hectare. The frame structure comprises of 28 steel masts with heights varying from 2 meters to 34 meters high. While the tallest mast is only 34 meters high, the dome reaches a height of 50 meters above the forest floor taking the valley into account. The masts, comprising of prefabricated steel frames of 1,8 meters sections, are linked by a series of cables varying in thickness. Each mast is anchored to specially design underground “plugs” to allow for flexibility. Over 100 kilometers of cables were used to create a grid onto which the galvanized welded mesh rests. The wire mesh used to encapsulate the bird park is sufficient to cover an area of 3,2 hectare and weighs over 80 tons. The masts and mesh are painted green and 10 000 liters of paint were used. Around the perimeter the mesh is attached to a concrete wall that also prevents predators from burrowing into the sanctuary. The aviary consists of 70% indigenous forest and the rest of the area is made up of planted garden, lawns, grassland and several dams. There are 1,2 kilometers of wooded, (2) wheel-chair friendly walkways of which 900 meters is elevated. The boardwalk starts relatively close to the forest floor and winds its way up towards the canopy. There are plenty of covered places where visitors can just relax and enjoy the forest- and bird sounds. A suspension bridge of 48 meters (bathed in mist from a special mist system) spans the gorge, as well as an amphitheatre that can seat 200 people, a unique location for special functions. The water of the 250 meters river, running over a water fall (with the walkway passing behind) and through the length of the park, is pumped back in a closed system and through two natural lungs so no pollution of any water systems is threatened by the existence of the park. There are two restaurants inside the dome comprising of four options for seating, 1) in the forest on a deck, 2) outside the forest on brick paving overlooking several dams with waterfowl and flamingoes, 3) on an island over the largest dam, or 4) at the dam wall wine bar overlooking the largest dam with waterfowl and swans. Toilet facilities are situated on different places throughout the park. A curio store is situated at the exit to the sanctuary. The entire project was built using unskilled local workmen. They were trained in building skills and in aspects of safety and high wire construction. Specially designed harnesses were used to allow workers to spend extended periods rigging the skeleton of cables. Personnel with abseiling experience were brought onboard to assist. During the period needed for construction of the sanctuary there were not a single IOD (injured on Duty) incident. The project was completed in 4,5 years and inside the budget of R 9 million (ZAR). Inhabitants The inhabitants of the sanctuary ranges from a mixture of exotic to African and indigenous birds. The birds stock come from various places and includes previously caged pet birds. This is why a great percentage of the inhabitants are completely tame and unafraid of humans. The array of different birds incorporate about 180 species that ranges from parrots, parakeets, hornbills, toucans, touracos, starlings, thrushes, conures, cranes, flamingoes, ibises, waterfowl, swans as well as tamarins and fruit bats. A variety of once pet birds allow for close contact. This sometimes means a nip on a finger or ear and even a snatch and grab from a jewelry thief. Misplaced sounds like phones ringing in trees or a “hello” from the canopy reminds a visitor of the human imprint still present with a lot of these birds. All pet birds go through a process of rehabilitation before being released into the sanctuary. (3) Interactions between the different species of birds are quite remarkable. It is more likely for birds of the same species to have a squabble than across the specie line. Visitors will find to their amazement species like macaws, toucans, starlings and doves eating together from the same feed platform, and then throw in a tamarin or two to make it even more amazing! Diet and husbandry The birds and animals are provided with a variety of foods twice a day. The foods are prepared daily and comprises of freshly cubed fruit and vegetables, a mixture of different sprouted seeds as well as specially formulated made up diets for the insect eating and more specialized feeders. These foods provide in the requirements of all the inhabitants. The fresh food and sprouted seeds are fed in stainless steel bowls sunken into specially designed suspended steel feeders attached to the boardwalk rails. This minimize human disturbance to the forest floor. These feeders and others are spread throughout the park and cater for all. All platforms are disinfected twice a day and the bowls replaced daily to provide the birds with the best possible care. Since the birds have free access to all food fed, a lot of pre planning went into the initial diet formulation to cater for all inhabitants. We also had to keep in mind the birds with more specialized dietary requirements of birds like toucans, flamingoes, etc. We allow for some wastage to ensure that there is always food available for the more timid birds. The birds are served with more than 2000 kilograms of food monthly. Because of the enormity of the aviary, the intense keeping that normally goes hand in hand with animals has been reduced significantly. This means less staff is required to manage the bird stock and the aviary at this stage only required general upkeep. Rehabilitation of birds A great number of the birds come from being previously housed in small, suspended aviaries or indoor cages. Releasing birds from these backgrounds into their new environment can be risky. We had great success in rehabilitating ex pets by first, after the initial quarantine period, exposing them to other birds, moving them outdoors into small sheltered aviaries, then into bigger flight aviaries where they could developed their flight muscles and then only into the actual sanctuary. The biggest challenge to almost all ex pets was to learn to control flight. Most of them could fly, but controlling their flight proved to be the challenge. Landing also proved to be an art. Most of the time the landings ended in a crash into the branches of a tree. Getting down from the trees became the next difficult step. Much time were spent by staff luring birds out of trees, especially the larger parrots. Finding a route out of the tree became easier with every attempt. (4) The adaptation of the birds to their new “wild” environment has surprised everybody. The instinct of the birds allow for them to cope with the natural factors they had to face like finding the food and water, finding shelter against the weather and flying. Watching these previously caged birds fly is an awesome sight. Birds of Eden is the only place in South Africa where a visitor that will never have the chance to see these birds in the wild, can enjoy watching a group of birds like macaws, cockatoos, conures, pigeons, ducks and even ibises fly together, circling around and maneuvering through trees. Visitor access Visitors to Birds of Eden Free Flight Sanctuary enter the park through a single entrance where an entrance fee is charged. The aviary allows for self-guided walks thanks to the layout of the boardwalk. Guided tours can be arranged at an extra charge where the bird keepers themselves will escort visitors through the park, explaining more about the birds as well as the construction and history of the park. Identification of the birds is made easier by the photographic guide available at the entrance. The guide booklet consists of photos of the bird species all photographed in the park, as well as name, Latin name, distribution, habitat and diet. A second updated booklet is in the process of print since new bird species have been added to the collection. Visitors are treated to a unique forest experience with a magical array of sounds coming from the canopy. Surrounded by the orchestra of birds do not necessary mean it is easy to actually see the birds. Looking for them is part of the journey. Feeding time makes spotting them easier since the birds come down to the platforms to feed. A visit to the bird sanctuary can take visitors anything from two to five hours to complete. The availability of various benches encourages visitors to sit and soak up the experience of the forest and the birds inside this unique sanctuary. Young and old will delight in the visit. The future The future of the bird park looks promising as the reactions and comments of visitors are very positive and encouraging. Memberships, which include free entry to the sanctuary for a year, have also grown in numbers. A combined entry into Birds of Eden and the sister primate sanctuary, Monkeyland, have also become very popular. Le nouveau sanctuaire de Birds of Eden, situé à côté de Plettenberg Bay, dans la province du Cap Occidental, en Afrique du Sud, est la plus grande volière au monde où les oiseaux évoluent en liberté. Ce sanctuaire a ouvert ses portes au public le 15 Décembre 2005, et abrite environ 3000 oiseaux de quelques 220 espèces et provenant des quatre coins du monde. Le concept Ce projet unique en son genre a été lancé et développé par Tony Blignaut, directeur général du sanctuaire pour primates de Monkeyland, situé à côté de la nouvelle volière. Mais, bien que le pylône le plus grand ne mesure que 34 mètres, le dôme atteint une hauteur de 50 mètres au dessus du sol à son point le plus élevé, du fait de la profondeur de la vallée. Les pylônes, faits de structures préfabriquées en acier de 1,8 mètres de section, sont reliés par une série de cibles d'épaisseur variable. Chaque pylône est ancré à une "prise" souterraine conçue exprès, afin de lui donner plus de flexibilité. Plus de 100 kilomètres de câbles ont été nécessaires pour réaliser le maillage sur lequel le grillage galvanisé et soudé repose. Le grillage métallique qui recouvre le parc pour oiseaux suffirait à couvrir une zone de 3,2 hectares, et pèse plus de 80 tonnes. Les pylônes et le grillage sont peints en vert et ont demandé quelques 10 000 litres de peinture. Autour du périmètre, le grillage est attaché à un mur en béton dont le but est aussi d'empêcher d'éventuels prédateurs de creuser un passage vers le sanctuaire. La volière comprend 70% de forêt naturelle, le reste étant composé de jardins plantés, pelouses, prairie et de plusieurs mares. Il y a une passerelle en bois longue de 1,2 kilomètre, accessible aux fauteuils roulants et surélevée sur 900 mètres. La passerelle démarre assez près du point le plus bas de la forêt, et serpente progressivement vers la canopée. Les visiteurs sont invités à se relaxer et à profiter de la forêt et du chant des oiseaux dans de nombreux endroits couverts. Un pont suspendu long de 48 mètres (nappé dans le brouillard grâce à un système de bruine artificielle) s'étend au-dessus de la gorge. Un amphithéâtre peut accommoder 200 personnes; un lieu unique pour des réceptions spéciales. L'eau de la rivière, longue de 250 mètres, coule dans une cascade (avec la passerelle passant derrière) et tout au long du parc. Elle est pompée à l'arrivée et réinjectée par deux poumons naturels en un circuit fermé, si bien que le parc ne risque pas de polluer (ou d'être pollué par ) une source d'eau extérieure. Deux restaurants, à l'intérieur du dôme, permettent de s'asseoir, au choix: 1) dans la forêt sur une terrasse, 2) en dehors de la forêt, sur un pavage en briques avec vue sur plusieurs des mares fréquentées par des oiseaux d'eau et des flamants roses, 3) sur une île au-dessus du lac principal, ou 4) au bar du lac, face au plus grand lac où abondent canards, oies et cygnes. Des toilettes sont distribués en divers points du parc. Un magasin de souvenirs se trouve à la sortie du sanctuaire. L'ensemble du projet a été réalisé par de la main d'œuvre locale non qualifiée. Elle a été formée à la construction, mais à différents aspects concernant la sécurité et le travail à haute altitude. Des harnais spécialement créés ont été utilisés afin de permettre aux travailleurs de passer de longues périodes à assembler le squelette de câbles. Du personnel avec des connaissances en rappel a été recruté pour aider. Lors de la construction du sanctuaire, aucun accident du travail n'a été à déplorer. Le projet a duré un total de 4,5 années et a pu être bouclé sans dépasser son budget de 9 millions de rands (ZAR). Habitants Les habitants du sanctuaire vont des oiseaux exotiques aux oiseaux africains ou sud-africains. Les oiseaux proviennent de divers endroits; certains sont d'anciens oiseaux domestiques en cage. C'est pourquoi un grand nombre d'habitants sont complètement apprivoisés et n'ont aucune peur des humains. Au total, le sanctuaire abrite dans les 200 espèces, notamment des perroquets, perruches, calacos, toucans, touracos, spréos, grives, conures, grues, flamants, ibis, oiseaux d'eau, cygnes, ainsi que des singes tamarins et des chauve-souris frugivores. Qui dit anciens animaux domestiques dit possibilité de contact rapproché. Mais parfois, également, un doigt ou une oreille pincés, ou même un vol de bijou à l'arrachée. Des bruits provenant d'endroits inattendus, comme un téléphone sonnant dans les arbres, ou un "bonjour" lancé de la canopée, rappelle aux visiteurs l'influence humaine toujours très présente chez beaucoup de ces oiseaux. Tous les anciens oiseaux domestiques passent par un processus de réhabilitation avant d'être relâchés dans le sanctuaire. Les différentes espèces d'oiseaux vivent en bonne intelligence. Les disputes éclatent plus souvent entre les individus d'une même espèce, qu'entre deux oiseaux d'espèces différentes. Les visiteurs s'émerveillent de voir des espèces comme des aras, des toucans, des spréos et des tourterelles manger ensemble à la même mangeoire, parfois même avec un tamarin ou deux! Régime alimentaire et élevage Les oiseaux et autre animaux reçoivent une nourriture variée deux fois par jour. La nourriture est préparée chaque jour et se compose de fruits et légumes fraîchement hachés, d'un mélange de différentes de germes de graines, ainsi que de menus composés exprès pour les insectivores et ceux qui ont un régime alimentaire plus spécialisé. La nourriture permet de satisfaire tous les habitants. La nourriture fraîche et les germes de graines est servie dans des récipients en acier inoxydable suspendus dans des mangeoires accrochées aux rampes de la passerelle. Ceci, afin de minimiser l'impact humain sur le tapis forestier. Ces mangeoires et d'autres sont réparties un peu partout dans le parc et fournissent aux besoins de tous. Toutes les plateformes sont désinfectées deux fois par jour et les récipients sont changés tous les jours pour que les oiseaux bénéficient du meilleur soin possible. Les oiseaux ayant libre accès à toute la nourriture qui leur est servie, un grand soin a été apporté dans la formule du régime de départ afin qu'il prenne en compte tous les habitants. Il a, également, fallu prendre en considération les oiseaux ayant des régimes alimentaires plus spécialisés, comme les toucans, flamants, etc. Il y a du surplus, afin que même les oiseaux les plus timides aient toujours de la nourriture à leur disposition. Au total, plus de 2000 kilogrammes de nourriture sont servis aux oiseaux chaque mois. A cause des dimensions massives de la volière, les soins intenses qui, habituellement, sont nécessaires avec les animaux, ont été réduits considérablement. Le plus grand défi, pour presque tous les ex oiseaux domestiques, a été d'apprendre à contrôler leur vol. La plupart d'entre eux pouvaient voler, mais avaient du mal à contrôler leur vol. Atterrir aussi s'est avéré être tout un art. Généralement, au lieu d'atterrir, ils s'écrasaient dans les branches d'un arbre. Descendre des arbres a également été une autre étape difficile. Le personnel a dû passer beaucoup de temps à attirer les oiseaux hors des arbres, en particulier, les plus grands perroquets. Mais, à chaque tentative, il devenait de plus en plus facile de trouver un passage pour descendre des arbres. L'adaptation des oiseaux à leur nouvel environnement "sauvage" a surpris tout le monde. Source text - English EXPERIENCE THE THRILL Monkeyland is unique in that the sanctuary caters for several species of primate, and they are not caged, they are free to move about the forest, and do so in harmony. The primates are therefore not found on predetermined points displayed on a map, the emphasis is to search them, and the reward is to see them as they should be: free and in the wild. Monkeyland is a modern primate sanctuary established in a pristine natural high canopy forest, which is well suited to those primates fortunate enough to live there. Perhaps the most significant aspect of the sanctuary is that it is both a multi-species and free-roaming facility. Monkeyland, which opened in 1998, is totally self sustaining from the revenue it derives from tourism. This revenue is generated by enthusiastic rangers who take visitors out on monkey safaris . The safaris, which are fun and exciting, are also educational and generally result in our guests leaving the sanctuary with a whole new focus on the primates of the world and the problems they are facing. Monkeyland has through the establishment of the Touch a Monkeys Heart Foundation; a non-profit organisation or as they are better known in South Africa, a Section 21 Company, secured the future of all the primates which reach Monkeyland. Over and above being the sole custodian of all the primates at Monkeyland, The Foundation is also responsible for the development and implementation of The Eden Syndrome, which is the process used at Monkeyland to prepare previously caged primates for their eventual release into the sanctuary. Possibly the most important aspect emanating from the existence of the sanctuary is that Monkeyland is a living example that these wonderful creatures can be kept in an almost wild state. From this must surely come the realisation that re-introducing primates to their habitats of origin from this wilder state must stand a far greater chance of success. Lunch in the lively Monkeyland forest is a unique experience. It is the only eating spot in the world where you can actually sip your coffee while you watch a large variety of primates, from all over the world, playing - enjoying their newfound freedom. Entrance to Monkeyland is free, however there is a fee for the guided safaris. Note that these guided safaris are open ended which means that one may go on as many safaris as you wish, in a given day, having only paid for the first excursion. A visit to Monkeyland is a must for every local resident of and visitor to The Garden Route. So swing by and visit this awesome monkey kingdom!! GENERAL INFORMATION While Knysna has a low crime rate, visitors are advised to take these precautions: General safety Never leave your luggage unattended, keep valuables locked away, secure doors and don’t leave bags and parcels lying on the seats of unlocked cars. In restaurants, don’t leave handbags under tables or mobile phones and wallets lying around. Be alert when wearing ostentatious jewellery or when carrying expensive equipment such as cameras. Obtain a map and plan your route before you travel. A police/traffic officer or will be glad to direct you if you get lost. It is an offence to use a mobile phone while driving, except with a hands-free kit. Always carry your driver’s licence. Official parking guides wear identifiable bibs and rely on tips for carrying out their duties. Public parking in Knysna operates on a prepaid card system. Cards are available from Knysna Tourism and various other retail outlets. Don’t allow strangers to assist you with ATM transactions. If your card gets stuck, immediately call the help line number provided at the ATM. Report lost passports and visas, without delay, to the South African Police Services. Your country’s embassy or consulate can be contacted through the Tourist Victim Support Programme, 079 496 1971. Be alert when walking the streets alone at night. Take a scenic drive on The Rheenendal Ramble and enjoy a spectacular ramble along the Outeniqua Mountain foot hills, through forest and farmland, over old stone bridges and across mountain rivers. Visit the many hidden gems along the way or explore the old Bendigo Mine at Millwood. Visit the Featherbed Nature Reserve – A ferry ride across the estuary brings you to the Nature Reserve where a 4x4-drawn trailer takes you to the top of the Western Head. You can then choose to walk back to the landing point along the breathtakingly beautiful Bushbuck trail (an easy 2.2 km walk) or stay on the trailer. Source text - English First Drive: 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid AutoBlog.com BMW’s pitch on how great the X6 ActiveHybrid goes like this: it’s the world’s most powerful hybrid vehicle, fuel consumption is reduced about 20 percent compared to a similar vehicle without a hybrid drivetrain, and no matter what speed you’re going, the incredibly complicated powertrain is performing at the most efficient level possible. All of this power means that the X6 hybrid is no sluggish Toyota Prius, offering frugal but unexciting performance. On the other hand, the size and weight of BMW’s luxury hybrid crossover means that, well, the X6 hybrid is no Prius in the mileage department, either. Let’s start by congratulating BMW for bringing its first batch of hybrids to market (the 7 Series ActiveHybrid is launching alongside the X6). In everyday traffic, the hybrid system helps keep fuel consumption down — to a still-lame 18 mpg combined (estimated) — and, since the engine can shut down at stops, the ultra-quiet interior made sitting in Miami traffic during our preview drive almost a pleasure. Nevertheless, there’s still a lot of vehicle here that hampers any attempt at real fuel efficiency gains. The X6 ActiveHybrid weighs 5,688 pounds for crying out loud — 400 pounds more than the non-hybrid. This vehicle simply doesn’t makes a lot of sense for anyone actually interested in fuel efficiency. Who does it make sense for? The ActiveHybrid powertrain in the X6 is a complex animal, being that it’s made up of a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine, two electric motors (one that puts out 91 hp and a smaller brother that manages 86 hp), three planetary gearsets and a 2.4 kWh NiMH battery pack. All that machinery manages to produce 357 kW (485 horsepower) and 780 Nm (575 pound-feet) of torque. This is what BMW has created out of the twomode hybrid system that the Bavarians codeveloped with General Motors and Mercedes (think Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and Benz S400 Hybrid). BMW claims its hybrid SUV can achieve fuel efficiency of up to 9.9 l/100 km (about 24 mpg U.S.) on the European drive cycle, but during our a few hours in the 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid Sports Activity Coupe, we averaged just 14.8 liters (16 mpg U.S.). On the way to 16 mpg, the X6 ActiveHybrid performs like one expects a BMW to. It wasn’t possible to test the handling much on the straight and clogged streets of southern Florida, but the CUV had plenty of punch for entering highways — the 0-to-60 mph time is a quick 5.4 seconds — and keeping up with traffic was a doddle. Power, be it electric or gasoline-fueled, was readily available whenever we touched the accelerator pedal. As much as the drivetrain offered, we didn’t get anywhere near the vehicle’s electronically limited top speed of 130 mph due to traffic. The good news is that there’s no need to go fast to enjoy the drive: at any speed, the X6 offers a comfortable cruise, with bumps and other annoyances passed over with ease. Also, the X6 ActiveHybrid’s electrical steering feels about as good as any hydraulic system ever has - at least in these non-challenging circumstances. For all the work that BMW engineers did to make the X6 ActiveHybrid burn less fuel, they haven’t chosen to apply some of those same easy tricks across the X6 lineup. For proof, take a look at those special aerodynamic wheels that are available only on the gasoline-electric version of the X6. While they do reduce emissions by 0.1 grams of CO2 per kilometer, don’t try to order them for your standard X6. The reason? BMW wants to give its first hybrid in the U.S. a distinctive look and those special wheels are one way the driver can make a statement. All is not lost, though, and BMW told us that making the aero wheels an option on the standard X6 is “in discussion.” Of course, the real efficiency gains come from the battery, not the wheels. The liquid-cooled 2.4 kWh NiMH battery pack sits between and above the rear wheels, offering the powertrain 1.4 kWh of its total power. The partelectric set-up gives the X6 four operating modes: eDrive, eBoost, Charge and Drive. eDrive is the most efficient and uses nothing but electrons to attain up to 37 mph for up to 1.6 miles. It’s not a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), but it works great in parking lots and during stop-and-go traffic like we experienced in Miami. eDrive doesn’t help drivers who like to engage the manual shifter, however, as it’s available only when the transmission is in D, not in manual shift mode. eBoost, on the other hand, uses the two electric motors to boost the internal combustion engine’s performance when needed and is the reason this beast never feels sluggish. ‘Charge’ mode means the regenerative brakes are capturing energy that would normally be lost from the discs, and finally, ‘Drive’ just means the X6 is using nothing but the V8 to move forward. The good news is that the complicated transmission of power goes completely unnoticed, showing that BMW’s engineers have done a tremendous job of blending the vehicle’s electric and gasoline-fed powerplants. Shifts are wonderfully smooth and the switch from electric to hybrid to pure gasoline drive just happens. You can hear the changes if you pay close attention — and there is an analog display under the speedometer showing the battery’s state of charge and whether or not it is charging up — but the best way to tell what is happening under the hood is to have the drive mode displayed on the iDrive’s info screen. Even though there are two different brake systems on the X6 ActiveHybrid, don’t look to the brake pedal to reveal which is engaging. The brake pedal is decoupled from the actual brake system and uses simulated feedback to tell the driver what is happening. Most of the time (up to 0.3 Gs), only the electric motors are used to brake the X6 ActiveHybrid. In other situations (read: emergency or sudden stop), the standard friction brakes kick in. The decoupled simulation is meant to make sure the driver experiences the same feeling at all times, and it easily passes for the real thing. Because the regenerative brake system in the X6 uses both electric motors, it is able to capture about 25 times more energy than the company’s other regen systems. This isn’t as big a deal as it sounds, since BMW’s Brake Energy Regeneration is fairly wimpy. The two 60 kW motors are theoretically capable of capturing up to 120 kW of energy, but the battery can only handle 57 kW. The X6’s design has its fans and detractors, but the Kammback shape does help the X6 stand out — for now. We can deal with the hood hump — excuse us, PowerDome — and the tall rear end most of the time, but from inside, the design is troubling. Backing-up is terrible, and the rearview mirror only serves to make the back of the car look like it’s a million miles away. Luckily, BMW has installed an almost-magical back-up camera system, which, like Infiniti’s Around View Monitor, uses cameras built into the rear end and under the side mirrors of the X6. When driving backwards, an image appears on the navigation screen that looks like a camera is floating above the car and showing the close surroundings. Using this screen and the curved side mirrors, it’s possible to back out of a garage or parking spot safely. Trying to do so just by turning your head? Not so much. While we’re still waiting for the EPA’s official figures, BMW expects the X6 ActiveHybrid will to achieve 17 mpg in the city, 19 on the highway and 18 combined. That’s better (except on the highway) than what the best non-hybrid X6 can muster: 15/21/17 for the 2010 X6 xDrive35i. A better comparison for the X6 ActiveHybrid is to the X6 xDrive50i, which also has a V8 engine and gets 13/18/15. The X6 ActiveHybrid goes on sale in the U.S. next month and will be built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The starting price is $89,775 (including an $875 destination and delivery charge), which would make it even more expensive than the 555-hp X6 M. In the end, we’re not sure who will want the X6 ActiveHybrid. Most likely they’ll be people who own an aging BMW X5 and want something new with more power and no penalty at the pump (at least compared to the rest of the X6 lineup). If past popularity of big BMWs is any indication, there is certainly a market for the X6 ActiveHybrid. Today, about 20 percent of BMW sales are X models. Introduced in 1999, the X5 was the brand’s first SUV and remains the most popular, with 911,000 sales. The X3 has sold 554,000 and the X6, introduced just last year, has already sold 57,000 units. We need more time with this big hybrid crossover to be sure, but based on our short drive, the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid will probably not find itself on our shopping list. All that extra hardware (and weight) and what we expect will be the highest price of any X6 model is balanced only by a marginal gain in MPGs. For us, although it’s a laudable technological achievement, the value just doesn’t add up. Source text - English Okay, you’ve decided what model of car you want to buy. And you know, more or less, how much you want to spend — or how much you can afford. You’ve kicked tires, talked to salesmen, taken a few shiny new numbers for a test-drive and you’re ready to make the deal. Except, you’re not quite done. You still need to decide whether to buy any of those “extras” that your salesperson will always suggest. Some of these extras have real value and are probably worth adding. Others ... maybe not so much. The list of “extras” offered by most dealers, may include paint sealant, fabric protection/leather care, extended warranties, extended ‘one price’ service contracts, rust/underbody coatings and anti-theft systems, to mention a few. We wanted to know which of these new car extras were worth it and which ones a consumer can do without. To get to the bottom of it, we thought we would consult an expert — David Bennett, Manager of Automotive Programs for AAA. As it turns out, like most things in life, the answer often just comes down to what’s best for you, depending on your own situation, budget or locale. Let’s address these add-ons one by one: Paint Sealant: “I think that most paint jobs on cars are pretty good these days, so in most cases you probably don’t need that anymore,” said Bennett, who offered one caveat. “But that can depend on what part of the country you live in — what the climate is, whether you get a lot of snow and ice, and what the road crews put down on the road — whether it is salt, or if it is something that is less harmful to the paint. But generally, as long as you keep your car washed, and wash that salt off of it, and get it waxed regularly, that paint should last without getting the ‘add-on’ sealer at the dealership. Also, if you get a chip or a ding, get it fixed so the rust doesn’t get a chance to set in and spread.” Fabric / Leather Protection: These extras are fairly self-explanatory — the dealer “treats” the upholstered or leather seating with a “protection” product that make the seats more resistant to stains or scuff marks. “This can be a good purchase, but the first question you should ask before buying it is, ‘What kind of lifestyle do I lead?’ suggests Bennett. “Do you have a lot of kids and are they prone to spill things? Or is your vehicle mostly going to be occupied by adults?” Do you eat in the car with some regularity? If so, and you’re just too darn messy for your own good, a stain protection might be a good way to go. “Also, look at exclusions in the plan,” advises Bennett. “If you’re a smoker, and the plan excludes burn holes from cigarette ashes, and you’re not diligent about making sure your ash is always short, that might not be a good purchase because of that exclusion. Each of these policies or plans is probably offering something different, and you need to read all of the exclusions before making that purchase, because it might not be a good one for you.” If you want to save some cash, one option would be to forego the protectant and just make sure you clean your seats regularly with a good upholstery cleaner or leather cleaner. To remove spots from a leather seat, use a good leather cleaner and work it into the spot with a soft cloth. If the spot still remains, let it sit for a few hours. Repeat, as they say, if necessary. It’s also a good idea , to use a leather conditioner regularly on leather seats to restore moisture and to maintain its appearance. Rustproofing: This is when the dealership applies various rust-inhibiting chemicals, waxes or sealers to the vehicle’s undercarriage. It can also be applied to other rust-prone areas. Rustproofing treatments sometimes include a guarantee over a certain number of years. Keep in mind that some guarantees require annual “checkups” to re-apply the sealers or rust inhibitors to any areas where the rustproofing may have been damaged. “I don’t think this is necessary in most cases,” opines Bennett. “The way most vehicles are constructed today, they are not nearly as prone to underbody rusting as they used to be in the old days — even in the north, where they get a lot of snow.” LoJack Car Security System / Anti-theft Systems: The folks at LoJack Car Security Systems report that a vehicle is stolen every 25 seconds in the U.S. Using a car alarm is one way to protect your vehicle. But if you want to go the more high-tech “tracking” route, using a security system like LoJack may give you more peace of mind. The LoJack System, includes a small radio frequency transceiver hidden in up to 20 different places in the vehicle. The System uses a code that is tied into the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Then, when you report that your car has been stolen, the state police crime computer can match code against the state VIN database. This automatically activates the LoJack System in the vehicle — emitting an inaudible signal. Then, police cruisers and aviation units that have the LoJack tracking system can identify the vehicle’s location, track it and recover it. LoJack claims that over 200,000 vehicles have been recovered worldwide using their system, with over 100,000 of those in the U.S. “Whether or not this is a purchase you should make depends on various factors. If you live in a high-crime area, a system like this could provide you with peace of mind,” advises Bennett. “But even if you live in a safe, low-crime district, your car can still be stolen from a busy downtown street or parking garage,” he notes. One caveat: Some car owners may not want their car back after it has been stolen, especially if it has been seriously vandalized, or if it has been driven so hard that it causes some mechanical problems. Another thing to consider is that owners of GM vehicles that come with its patented OnStar system, probably won’t need a theft tracking program, says Bennett. “Because the system allows OnStar operators to track the location of the vehicle if it is stolen. So if you buy a GM car with the OnStar system, you may want to pass on a LoJack or similar tracking system.” Extended Warranties: “This really does depend on how long you plan to keep the vehicle, because most of these extended warranty plans don’t kick in until the manufacturer’s warranty expires,” advises Bennett. “And these days, those manufacturers warranties are three or five years, sometimes longer. “So if you plan on selling the car after three or five years, it probably doesn’t make sense to buy the extended warranty.” Some warranties offer transferable policies, which let you “sell” the warranty along with the vehicle. Others allow you to “return” the warranty for a pro-rated refund. Bennett also explains that not all warranties are created equal. “They usually have three levels of warranties: A basic extended warranty will just cover the powertrain, for example; while a better one will cover the powertrain plus some other components that are listed — or an ‘exclusionary’ extended warranty may say it covers everything except those items that are listed. At the top end, the best warranty just covers everything, but that is also the most expensive.” Bennett gives an example of one manufacturers warranty. “For a 2007 Buick, the basic manufacturers warranty is five years or 100,000 miles for the powertrain coverage, and the corrosion warranty is six years or 100,000 miles. Source text - English Still Talking, With Hands at 10 and 2 INCREASINGLY, it is the law of the land. But it is also just common sense: Driving while holding a cellphone is a lousy idea. Six states, including New York and New Jersey, as well as the District of Columbia, have banned holding a cellphone while driving and, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 23 more state governments are considering similar bans. Such laws do not prohibit talking on a cellphone — only that you use a hands-free device (usually an earpiece or a speakerphone accessory) so that both hands stay on the wheel. Of course, some studies suggest that banning handheld cellphones while driving does not go far enough — that maintaining any phone conversation is too distracting for the driver. But if the proliferation of people randomly bursting into monologues on city streets is any indication, many people prefer hands-free communication even when they’re on foot. Some of that growth is linked to legislation, some to lower prices, but another factor is the evolution of hands-free technology that has yielded better sound quality and stronger privacy measures. Hands-free devices are generally split into two categories: earpieces and speakerphone units. Because they can be used behind the wheel or while walking (or cooking, or gardening), earpieces have been far more popular. Early Bluetooth accessories suffered from a dreaded malady known as “pairing syndrome.” In order to establish a wireless connection to your handset, an earpiece or speakerphone would trade codes over the air. This often led to repeated code inputs on the part of the owner, as the pairing process was about as unreliable as could be. Common side effects included high-decibel profanity, increased blood pressure and hurling the device across the room. Fortunately, most new Bluetooth accessories “auto pair.” You may need to enter the code the first time, but you do it just once. After that, the device will remember the secret handshake and pair up with your handset automatically. Bluetooth earpieces have also improved in sound quality. Earpieces like the Aliph Jawbone Prime ($130), the BlueAnt Q1 ($130) and the Jabra BT530 ($80) all use multiple microphones. While their specific technologies differ, the principle is the same: One microphone sits by your mouth to pick up your voice while another sits higher on the earpiece to pick up ambient audio. Using some fancy software, the earpiece determines which sound is your voice and then filters out the background noise. The Sound ID 300 ($120) has three settings, each increasing the frequency range in which people most commonly lose their hearing as they age. It also will automatically adjust the volume when the environmental noise changes. The Q1 takes a short list of voice commands, so it will announce the number calling and users can just say “answer” to take the call. The only hitch is that users must memorize the precise phrases required for it to act on the commands. But in spite of the capabilities of earpieces, some people just do not want them. For them, speakerphone accessories provide a true hands- (and body-) free option. These devices can clip to a car’s sun visor or protrude from the cigarette lighter plug. Usually called “car kits,” these sets don’t do as well sorting out voice from noise, but because of the larger size, they can incorporate features not often found in headsets. The Motorola T505 Motorokr, which costs $140, does its best to provide many of the same features found in factory-installed systems in new cars. Using an onboard FM transmitter, it will play incoming calls over a car’s speakers, and it can play music files from a phone with stereo Bluetooth. If you don’t need the music-playing features, consider Motorola’s other speakerphone, the T305, which costs $70. Some Bluetooth kits offer text-to-speech and voice command, like the BlueAnt Supertooth 3, which costs $100. The Supertooth loads contacts from your phone when it links. When a known contact calls, the Supertooth speaks the name aloud (albeit in a somewhat robotic voice). If the caller is unknown, it speaks the phone number. Through the limited voice commands available, “yes” accepts the call, or “ignore” sends it to voice mail. The device can also redial the last number called on command. Of course, if you are buying a new car, the choice of a hands-free device may have been made for you. Various makers have their own factory-installed systems, which tend to have the most advanced features. Ford autos (including Lincolns and Mercurys) use the Sync system, a collaboration with Microsoft. Sync links to a cellphone and adds voice recognition software to control the handset through verbal commands. It also uses a synthesized voice to read incoming e-mail messages aloud. All of the sound comes through the stereo system, which mutes music when there is an incoming call. “Anyone who has used an integrated system in a new car would say that is their favorite and highest quality,” said Mike Foley, the executive director of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, which sets engineering standards for Bluetooth devices. Some — even most — of these features are available in aftermarket Bluetooth hands-free devices. The features can even be integrated into a car’s existing sound system, but the aftermarket parts are expensive and installation frequently runs an additional several hundred dollars. By comparison, when Ford’s Sync system is bought as an option, it’s $400. If legislation doesn’t compel you to go hands-free now, you might want to wait. This month the engineering group that controls Bluetooth is setting a new standard that will improve handsets’ sound and reliability. But to take advantage of the new standard, you’ll need new gear — and that gear is not expected to hit stores until the end of the year. I have been a freelance English >French (and English > French (Canada)) translator since 2004. During that time I have translated very diverse texts : a lot of marketing, news articles, company newsletters, automotive, tourism, environment, legal, financial, medical texts… Please see below or my attached CV for details.

My rates are negotiable according to volume and difficulty, but I normally ask for 0.08 euros/source word (or equivalent if paid in another currency through Paypal). For editing : 0.04 euros/source word, 20 euros/hour and 0.05 euros/word for MTPE.

Linked to some degree to tourism, nature / environment is really my favourite subject because it is the one I care most about in my personal life. I have notably been a bilingual nature guide working in a forest with monkeys and birds for 6 years and trained as a ranger in one of the World’s biggest game reserve.
