Source text - English Of all his adventures so far, Henry Cole is more sceptical than usual at the beginning of his ride through Russia that this will prove to be a world’s greatest motorcycle ride. Starting in stunning St Petersburg, Henry is hugely impressed with the cultural splendour on offer. So far, so good. However, surprisingly soon after leaving the city Henry finds that the roads quickly run out of tarmac and he has to apply some motocross techniques to stay upright in the now persistent rain. Waking up in Cherepovetez, the third most polluted city in the world, doesn’t really help matters. From here it’s still another 1,500 miles to Moscow and along the route Henry is often confronted with virtually impassable roads. Even after arriving in Moscow Henry still has to tackle the gird locked road system in torrential rain. They say that out of great adversity great deeds come but it’s not entirely certain that Henry will see it that way.

The autonomous Western individual is delegating skills and knowledge to what Clay Shirky terms the "Algorithmic Authority," and instead of gaining power, this act of outsourcing only further weakens the subject.
What remains is the Art of Self-Curation, much like Michel Foucault's "technology of the self," aimed at creating ever-changing temporary collections inside our netbooks and iPhones – Adilkno's data dandyism as a mass practice. By nature we filter, forget, hear, and see selectively, but that doesn't mean that we must agree that all the filtering should be done on our behalf. The danger of filters is their invisibility. What we need is a growing awareness of the existence and architecture of the filters that surround us. Our cultural bias is something to be aware of, not to run from. "The problem is filter failure, not information overload" is the title of one of Clay
Shirky's lectures that you can watch online. I would rephrase this as the lack of awareness of the filter architecture that produces the feeling of information overload. We need to distrust Google’s intention
to "organize the world's information" and see it instead as a worldwide move toward data manipulation, driven by a curious dynamic of state control and corporate interest. Before we start to condemn the powers to be, we need to ask ourselves some key questions. How do we overcome this paradoxical era of hyped-up individualization that results precisely in the algorithmic outsourcing of the self? How do we determine significance outside of the celebrity paradigm and instead use intelligence to identify what’s at stake?

I can’t tell if I’m moving my mouth or if there’s even anyone to ask. It’s too dark to see. I blink once, twice, three times. There is a dull foreboding in the pit of my stomach. That, I recognize. My thoughts translate only slowly into language, as if emerging from a pot of molasses. Word by word the questions come: Where am I? Why does my scalp itch? Where is everyone? Then the world around me comes gradually into view, beginning as a pinhole, its diameter steadily expanding. Objects emerge from the murk and sharpen into focus. After a moment I recognize them: TV, curtain, bed.
I know immediately that I need to get out of here. I lurch forward, but something snaps against me. My fingers find a thick mesh vest at my waist holding me to the bed like a—what’s the word?—straitjacket. The vest connects to two cold metal side rails. I wrap my hands around the rails and pull up, but again the straps dig into my chest, yielding only a few inches. There’s an unopened window to my right that looks onto a street. Cars, yellow cars. Taxis. I am in New York. Home.

Source text - English It was when I took down my Encyclopedia Britannica in order to obtain material for a few thoughtful pages on New Year's Day and its customs that I noticed, not for the first time, a very annoying habit of that great work of reference. I allude to its habit of leaving off just at the point where it has got the reader all agog and excited.
Take, for example, its description of New Year's Day in medieval England. In those times, it says, it was the practice for the King to "extort gifts from his subjects", adding that in the year 1533 Henry the Eighth collected many thousands of pounds in this manner-being laid a stymie in only one instance, when Bishop Latimer, a man with a good business head, handed him in lieu of cash a copy of the Old Testament with the leaf turned down at Hebrews xm. 4.
So far, so good. Most interesting. But then, having mentioned that on another occasion the bluff monarch got into the ribs of Cardinal Wolsey to the tune of one hundred and seventeen pounds, seventeen shillings and sixpence, it signs off without a word of explanation, leaving the reader completely mystified. Why one-one-seventeen, seventeen and six? Why the seventeen bob? Why the sixpence?
I have heard two theories advanced. The first, that the King met the Cardinal in a dark alley on his way back from the bank and stood him on his head and lifted the contents of his pockets, does not satisfy me. If Cardinal Wolsey drew a cheque to Self, it would have been for some less eccentric figure, and, knowing that it was New Year's Day and Henry was about, he would certainly not have gone to the bank without an armed escort. It is far more likely that the money changed hands at the conclusion of a merry party in the small hours of the morning. The waiter came round with the bill, and King Henry, after the usual unconvincing fumbling, told him to take it on to the clerical gentleman in the paper cap.
This would explain everything. The bill came to exactly a hundred and seventeen pounds, fifteen shillings. Two bob for the waiter and sixpence for the hat-check girl, and there you are. One can always reason these things out if one tries, but my point is that the Encyclopedia Brilannica ought not to throw the burden of the brainwork on its readers. Making these silly mysteries is mere verbal horseplay, unworthy of its great reputation.

Далее, издание сообщает, что в год тысяча пятьсот тридцать третий Генрих VIII собрал подобным образом много тысяч фунтов. Лишь однажды его загнал в угол наделенный практической сметкой епископ Латимер, который взамен наличных вручил королю Библию, заложенную на том месте Послания к Евреям, где речь идет о святости брака.
Пока что неплохо. Очень даже любопытно. Но вот, упомянув, что в другой раз нашему плутоватому монарху удалось выудить у кардинала Вулси сто семнадцать фунтов, семнадцать шиллингов и шесть пенсов, повествование обрывается без всякого пояснения, оставляя читателя в глубокой задумчивости. Почему сто семнадцать, семнадцать и шесть? Почему семнадцать шиллингов? Почему шесть пенсов?
Я слышал на этот счет две теории. Первая гласит, что король подкараулил кардинала в темном переулке, когда тот возвращался из банка, поставил его на голову и вывернул карманы. Эта версия никуда не годится. Случись Вулси выписать на самого себя чек, он выбрал бы сумму покруглее – к тому же, зная, что на носу Новый год, а в окрестностях бродит Генрих, он бы ни за что не отправился в банк без вооруженной охраны. Гораздо вероятней, что с деньгами ему пришлось расстаться в предрассветные часы после веселой вечеринки. Source text - Russian Вычленим параметры «феномена Бортко», прибегнув к рецензиям как обычных зрителей, так и профессионалов. Последние экранизации В. Бортко имели рекордные рейтинги, но в то же время и крайне разноречивые отзывы. Лозунг «верности классике» воплотился в семантической нейтральности, принципе «золотой середины», иллюзии объективности. Двусмысленность и неопределенность авторской позиции была прочувствована и зрительской аудиторией, раздававшей «Мастеру и Маргарите» прямо противоположные идеологические оценки и противоречивые интерпретации – от просоветской до антисоветской.
Особенно в этом отношении показательна рецензия Дм. Черного, который записал режиссера в «контрики, у которого кончилось вдохновение»; «постаревшие, вялые, тестообразные герои вызывают неприятное недоумение...»; «Собачье сердце» – вдохновенно снятая и сыгранная контра. Теперь – закат и пустота. Действительность вернула те времена и нравы, о которых, «зелено-абажурных», тосковал в романе Булгаков»; «Булгаков предвосхитил мечту советского интеллигента; мечта Мастера – не участвовать в этом коллективном социалистическом способе производства, а выиграть много денег и сделаться любовником жены советского чиновника, написав при этом богоискательский роман, который жене партийного рогоносца нравится больше светлого коммунистического будущего: пахнет нашим родным времячком – стабилизацией, ядрить ее!»
Рецензент упрекает Бортко, что тот недостаточно обнаружил параллели между внутренней пустынностью эпохи 1930-х годов и пустотой начала 2000-х. Вывод Черного:
«Взяв лучшее антисоветское произведение советской эпохи, нынешние «контрики» не сумели ничего на нем надстроить. Старые, немощные, они доигрывают любимые мотивы, не умея уже заставить прочих в них влюбиться».
Translation - English Let us now isolate the parameters of “Bortko phenomenon” by using reviews produced both by ordinary members of the audience, as well as by professional critics. The latest Bortko adaptations received record ratings, but they also evoked some extremely disappointed responses. “Fidelity to the classics” motto resulted in the semantic neutrality, the “golden mean” principle, the illusion of objectivity. This ambiguity and vagueness of the director’s position was felt by the audience, which gave Master and Margarita totally opposing ideological assessments and contradictory interpretations: from pro-Soviet to anti-Soviet.
Particularly telling in this respect is a review written by Dmitrii Chernyi, who diagnosed the director as a "petty contra [kontrik] who exhausted his inspiration"; "aged, sluggish, doughlike characters arouse unpleasant bewilderment..."; "Heart of a Dog" was an inspiredly produced and acted “contra”. Now there is nothing but decline and emptiness". "Reality itself brought back those “green-lampshade” times and manners which Bulgakov yearned for in his novel". "Bulgakov foreshadowed the dream of a Soviet intellectual [intelligent]; Master’s dream is to avoid participation in this collective socialist mode of production, winning instead a lot of money and becoming a lover of a Soviet bureaucrat’s wife—meanwhile producing a God-seeking [bogoiskatel’skij] novel, which the wife of the party cuckold likes better than the bright communist future: this smacks of our own merry times—stabilization, drat it!"
The reviewer berates Bortko for not highlighting enough the parallels between the inner hollowness of the 1930s era and the emptiness dominating the beginning of 2000s. Chernyi concludes:
"Taking the best anti-Soviet text of the Soviet era, our modern petty contra [kontriki] could not build anything upon it. Old and impotent, they are playing out their favorite tunes, not knowing any more how to make the others fall in love with them".
