Source text - German Warum gibt es eigentlich keinen 25-Euro-Schein?
Im Mai 1998 erließ der Rat der Europäischen Union eine Verordnung (Nr. 975/98) über die Stückelungen und technischen Merkmale des neuen Geldes. Darin heißt es: „Mit den Stückelungen der Banknoten und Münzen muss gewährleistet sein, dass Barzahlungen von Euro- und Cent-Beträgen auf einfache Weise erfolgen können.“ Dies war die offizielle Maßgabe. Und umgesetzt wurde sie mit den bekannten Münzen und Banknoten von 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 und 50 Cent beziehungsweise Euro sowie den 100-, 200- und 500-Euro-Scheinen. 1 – 2 – 5 – so lautet die Reihe, die gewählt wurde.
Dahinter stecken weder Zufall noch Willkür. Vielmehr wird damit ein mathematisches Prinzip befolgt. Denn mit dieser Reihung lassen sich beliebige Beträge beim Bezahlen am einfachsten zusammenstellen, sprich, diese Schein-und-Münzen-Kombination führt dazu, dass die Menschen im Alltag theoretisch so wenig Bargeld wie möglich mit sich herumtragen müssen, um damit alle erdenklichen Preise begleichen zu können.
Der Ausgangspunkt ist dabei, dass unser Geld auf einem Dezimalsystem basiert. Folglich müssen auf jeden Fall Münzen und Scheine mit dem Wert 1 sowie Zehnerpotenzen, also 10 und 100, existieren. Nun müssen die restlichen Werte so gewählt werden, dass möglichst wenige davon kombiniert werden müssen, um jeden anderen Betrag zusammenstellen zu können. Die Kombination 1 – 2 – 5 hat den Vorteil, dass man einerseits die Einzelmünzen in unterschiedlicher Kombination dabeihaben kann, um jeden beliebigen Betrag zusammenzubekommen, und gleichzeitig ist die Summe des Mindestbetrags, den man dazu braucht, am niedrigsten. Dahinter stecken einige ma- thematische Verrenkungen, aber um es kurz zu fassen: Diese Reihung ist für den Alltag die praktischste. Und dies ist der Grund, warum es weder 2,5- oder 25-Cent-Stücke noch 25-Euro-Scheine gibt.
Allerdings haben sich diese Logik bis zum heutigen Tage nicht alle Zentralbanken zu allen Zeiten zu Eigen gemacht. So erinnert sich mancher vielleicht noch an den 25- Gulden-Schein, der in den Niederlanden vor Einführung des Euro zirkulierte. Auch die Esten hatten bis zum Beitritt zur Währungsunion in diesem Jahr einen 25-Kronen- Schein. Einige wenige Länder haben die Stückelung bis heute beibehalten. So gibt es in Syrien einen 25-Pfund-Schein und auf Haiti eine Banknote im Wert von 25 Gourdes. Auf den Seychellen ist neben der 25-Rupien-Banknote auch eine 25-Cent-Münze in Umlauf. Genau so ist es beim Cayman-Dollar – 25 Dollar einerseits, 25 Cent andererseits. Die Cayman-Inseln warteten zeitweise aber auch mit einer noch ungewöhnlicheren Variante auf, nämlich mit einem 40-Dollar-Schein. Dieser war Anfang der 80er- Jahre jedoch nur kurzzeitig in Umlauf.
Der Grund für die Existenz dieser 25er-Münzen und -Scheine liegt wohl in der Tradition. Immerhin gibt es auch in den USA heute noch eine 25-Cent-Münze, und dieses Vorbild strahlt bis heute ab. Doch auch Amerika hat sich nach und nach an die moder- nen Stückelungen angepasst – bis 1929 gab es beispielsweise eine 2½-Dollar-Münze, den sogenannten Quarter Eagle. Bis 1889 gab es zudem 3-Cent und 3-Dollar-Münzen.

This is based on several mathematical twists, but to put it briefly: this series is the most practical one for everyday use. And this is the reason why there are neither 2.5- or 25-cent coins, nor are there any 25-Euro notes.
To this day, however, not all central banks have adopted this logic, nor have they done so at all times. Many might remember the 25-Guilder bill, which circulated in the Netherlands before the introduction of the Euro. The Estonians also had a 25-Kroner bill before joining the Monetary Union this year. A few countries have retained their denomination until today. There is a 25-Pound note in Syria and a banknote worth 25 Gourdes in Haiti. In the Seychelles, in addition to the 25-Rupee banknote, there is a 25-cent coin in circulation. The same is true for the Cayman dollar - 25 dollars on the one hand and, on the other, 25 cents. Temporarily, the Cayman Islands featured a still more unusual variant, namely a 40-dollar bill. It was, however, in circulation only for a short time at the beginning of the 80s.
The reason for the existence of these coins and bills of 25 is tradition. After all, there is still a 25-cent coin in the United States, and this model radiates to this day. Even the United States have gradually adapted to the current denominations—until 1929, for example, there was a 2½-dollar coin, the so-called Quarter Eagle, and until 1889 there were also 3-cent and 3-dollar coins.
