Source text - English
Interpretation of written music is the ability to realize the notes on the pages into sounds. However, the process of making these sounds meaningful is unclear and without a systematic pedagogical approach. This paper begins by addressing the distinction between music as sound and written music, and explores the role of written music as a medium to translate musical ideas into tangible visual representation. Then, the cognitive processes of interpretation of written music and meaningful interpretation is explained within the framework of level of processing and expert memory. Furthermore, I explain why memorization of music is a necessary step in meaningful interpretation is necessary as a mean interpreting meaningfully and to developing musical consciousness, and how it can be encouraged in academic and pedagogical contexts.

Translation - Spanish La interpretación de música escrita es la habilidad de convertir las notas de las páginas en sonido. Sin embargo, el proceso para hacer estos sonidos significativos es poco claro y carece de una aproximación pedagógica sistematizada. En la primera parte de este trabajo de investigación se discute la distinción entre la música como sonido y la música escrita. Además, se explora el rol de la música escrita como medio para convertir ideas musicales en representaciones visuales tangibles. Después, los procesos cognitivos de interpretación de la música escrita e interpretación significativa son explicados dentro del marco del nivel de procesamiento y la memoria experta. Asimismo, se explica por qué la memorización de la música es un paso necesario para la interpretación significativa como medio para interpretar significativamente y para desarrollar consciencia musical, y cómo puede fomentarse en contextos académicos y pedagógicos.

Source text - Spanish Primera, segunda, tercera, claxon, izquierda, derecha, izquierda, claxon, freno, claxon, claxon, aceleración, tercera, cuarta, ciclovía, freno, banqueta, calle, semáforo en rojo, acelera... Beatriz conduce desquiciadamente entre las calles de la Ciudad. Sube el volumen de la radio, sigue con horror las noticias. Una balacera en una escuela al sur de la ciudad, la primaria Cristobal Obregón, la escuela de su hijo... Siente el pecho al borde de una taquicardia, el rostro le hormiguea, el pensamiento le zumba... No puede ser. Una cosa así de terrible, cómo les podría estar pasando a ellos, gente buena, ejemplar, trabajadora, que con tanto esfuerzo han construido su prestigio, su vida.
Ella, hasta ese día, había salido anticipadamente a su trabajo, al igual que su esposo, se esforzaban todo cuanto fuera necesario por demostrar su capacidad en los respectivos corporativos donde trabajaban. El estilo de vida que siempre quisieron tener para ellos y su hijo no se había conseguido sin esfuerzo. ¿Por qué tenía que pasar esto a sólo unos días de poder tomar ese viaje de vacaciones que por más de dos años habían postergado?
Siete víctimas confirmadas hasta el momento, cinco muertes, dos heridos... Beatriz grita, quiere apagar la radio, pero no se atreve. Sabe que necesita más información. No dicen más. Los reporteros continúan repitiendo lo que saben hasta ahora. Llama al celular de su esposo. No contesta. En cuanto escuchó la noticia en un televisor del corporativo, salió corriendo al estacionamiento. Él debió hacer lo mismo, seguro que sí. Él debe ir en camino también, sorteando el tráfico, arrojando el auto a quien sea necesario para abrirse paso. Es cierto, hace tanto que la comunicación no está bien entre ellos, pero ante esto él debería responder al menos, ¿no? Ya se encontrarán en la escuela, ya hablarán ahí. Esto podría cambiar las cosas. Todo podría mejorar entre ellos a partir de hoy. La tragedia nos hace replantearnos tantas cosas... Pero primero tiene que saber si su hijo está bien.
Cinco muertes, dos heridos... Su hijo no puede estar entre esas cifras. Dios... Una reportera tiene los nombres de las víctimas: Paola Urgueta, Iker Hernández, Mateo Schmidt, Linda Miranda, Úlises Godoy... El corazón de Beatriz se suspende. Ninguno de los nombres es su hijo. Suspira. Espera la siguiente lista, la de heridos. Su hijo tampoco está en esa. Una luz parece caer sobre su rostro en medio de todo. Vuelve a marcar a su esposo. No contesta. Continúa moviéndose con prisa.
El alivio no es total. Las autoridades han tomado el control de la situación, continúa la narración. La balacera fue provocada por un alumno del colegio, el menor Miguel Pérez Soberano, estudiante de quinto grado que... Alto. Semáforo en verde. Claxon. Claxon. Mentadas de madre. Beatriz congelada frente al volante. La sangre le palpita con violencia en cada arteria. Está helada. El nombre del agresor es el nombre de su hijo. La vida entera le da un vuelco en menos de un instante. Su celular vibra, es ahora su esposo quien llama. Ignora la llamada. Saltan a su mente mil imágenes diversas. Recuerdos de una vida que de pronto le parece no ser la suya. Su vientre hinchado. El misoprostol reposando en la palma de su mano. La píldora yéndose por el lavabo. El vientre más hinchado, a punto de estallar. Una tierna criatura creciendo más rápido de lo que podía notar. Luces de navidad y regalos. Un atardecer en la playa. Pero si faltaba tan poco para ir de vacaciones... Rostros de Miguel aquí y allá. Miguel recién nacido. Miguel en el jardín de niños. Miguel en su primera comunión. Miguel blanco y negro en ultrasonido. Miguel hace un año. ¿Pero cómo era el rostro de Miguel en los últimos tiempos? No estaba tan segura.
La reportera sigue hablando. Beatriz apaga la radio, no soporta más esa voz. Cierra los ojos. Los abre cuando el celular vibra de nuevo. Su esposo, él debe estar ya ahí, seguro que sí. O tal vez no, tal vez está pensando igual que ella. Pero no importa. No importa nada.
La línea de automóviles que la rebasa se enfila hacia el sur. Beatriz observa el tránsito como el flujo de un río que la incita a lanzarse a la deriva. Prende de nuevo la radio y sintoniza una estación de música de los noventas. Enciende la marcha y se enfila hacia un rumbo no marcado. Más adelante pasará de largo la desviación hacia la primaria de su hijo y continuará su marcha hasta algún lugar del mapa donde la radio y la televisión no hablen de balaceras escolares y niños que atacan a sus compañeros.

Newscasters keep repeating what is known so far. She calls her husband’s number. No answer. The moment she heard the news coming out of a company’s tv, she sprinted toward the parking lot. He must have done the same, sure he did. He must be on his way too, navigating through traffic, throwing his car at anyone to make way. Yes, communication has been off between them for quite a while, but at least he should answer now, right? They’ll meet in the school, they’ll talk then. This could change things. Their relationship could improve starting today. Tragedy will make them reassess so much... But first, she must find out if her child is safe.
Five dead, two injured... Her child cannot be one of them. Please, God... A reporter gives the names of the victims: Paola Urgueta, Iker Hernandez, Mateo Schmidt, Linda Miranda, Ulises Godoy... Beatriz’ heart comes to a halt. Her child has not been mentioned. Sigh. She waits for the next list; injured. Once again, her child’s not mentioned. A thousand images flash in front of her eyes; memories of a life that suddenly seems to belong to someone else. Her swollen belly; a post-day pill resting in the palm of her hand, and then being flushed down the drain. Her belly swollen to the verge of explosion. A tender creature growing faster than she could keep track of. Christmas lights and presents; sunset by the beach. They were so close to those vacations... Miguel’s face here and there. Newborn Miguel. Kindergarden Miguel. First Communion Miguel. Ultrasound, black and white Miguel. Last year Miguel. What did Miguel’s face look like lately? She could not tell for sure.
The newscaster continues speaking. Beatriz turns the radio off; she cannot stand that voice any more. Her eyes close. They spring open when her phone vibrates once more. Her husband, he must be there by now, he must be. Or maybe not, maybe he is lost in his mind, just like her. It doesn’t matter. Nothing really matters.
The stream of cars passing her by is heading South. Beatriz watches as the traffic flows like a river urging her to drift away. She turns the radio back on and tunes in to a 90’s music station. She turns her car on and heads
towards an unknown destination. Further down the road, she will miss the bypass that would take her to her son’s school and continue her journey to a place in the map where the radio and the television speak no more about school shootings and children who attack their classmates.
