Source text - English Can students be both gifted and learning disabled? What are their characteristics and how can we meet their needs? These questions have haunted the field for over 30 years. Professionals concerned with the plight of these youngsters have written extensively supporting the idea of bright children who simultaneously struggle with school (Baum, Cooper, & Neu, 2001; Baum, Owen & Dixon, 1991; Fox, Brody, & Tobin, 1983; Maker, 1977; Reis et al; 1995; Whitmore, 1980; Whitmore & Maker, 1985). While this work has made a difference for many youngsters, others remain underserved and misunderstood. The following excerpt describes the frustration faced by many families who live with youngsters who are doubly different-exhibiting intellectual prowess on the one hand and struggling with academic tasks on the other.

Converted hospital ships have done good work, and the sick are much more comfortable aboard them than aboard battleships or other cruising ships; but at best they are makeshifts, and the sick could be more easily, comfortably, and economically catered for aboard one that is properly designed and constructed.”
Translation - French « À l’édification soit des maisons soit des navires, des précautions sanitaires ne sont pas adressées de tel profondeur comme si nous construisons des hôpitaux ou des navires d’hôpital et en générale c’est impraticable corriger ces erreurs sanitaires pour qu’ils montent jusqu’au niveau demandé par les hôpitaux ou les navires-hôpitaux modernes. Des navires-hôpitaux ont fait du bon travail et les malades y sont beaucoup plus confortables qu’à bord les cuirassés ou d’autres navires ; mais ils sont au mieux de fortune et nous pourrions répondre aux besoins des malades plus facilement, confortablement et économiquement à bord un navire désigné et construit de façon appropriée. »

Source text - English For forty years, the primary objectives of US policy in the Persian Gulf have been to assure access by the industrialized nations to the region's oil and to prevent those resources from falling under the control of the Soviet Union or any other hostile power. The recent events in Iran, the Iran-lraq war and its aftermath, the manoeuvring of a powerful post-war Iraq, increasing Soviet activism, and the proliferation of chemical weapons and ballistic missiles call for an examination of what political, economic, and military elements will best serve future US policy and interests in the region.
Translation - French Pendant 40 ans, les objectifs principaux de la politique américaine au Golfe Persique ont été d’assurer l’accès au pétrole de la région par les pays industrialisés et d’empêcher que ces ressources tombent sous le contrôle de l’Union Soviétique ou d’aucune autre pouvoir hostile.
