Done. 177 km in 38 h 21 min 54 sec. You can stop here if you only wanted to hear about the result.
The Ultra-Marin has been on my To-Do list for a long time. My family originates from Plumergat, a small village near Vannes which is the start and finish of the main event. I know the place and am in love with it. The Ultra-Marin is actually a set of running races (36 km, 56 km, 87 km, 177 km) and a couple of complementary walks. The main event is a complete loop around the Gulf of Morbihan. I had never raced such a distance before. However, at the end of August, I will participate in the UTMB CCC. While shorter (101 km), the race features 6100 m of positive climb and will take me more than a day to complete. I was therefore after something that would allow me to experience overnight racing. I was also after 5 ITRA points. My ultimate goal is indeed to do the main UTMB race. In order to participate in the lottery, I needed 15 ITRA points in 3 races max (10 in 2 races with the new rules). The CCC will give me 5 (assuming I finish it in the allowed time, which is a tall order). The full Ultra-Marin would give me 5 additional points.
I arrived in Vannes a couple of days before the race, together with my parents, who would crew for me during the event. We had rented a nice flat through AirBnB. It was close to the city centre, where the race village was located. Being located in an old stone building, it kept cool during the heatwave we were going through. Indeed, the weather forecast for the race days was hellish, between 28 and 30 deg C during the day, minimum 20 at night. That worried me a bit, since the only race I was disqualified from, the Trail des Beaumes de Venise, occurred in similar conditions.
I visited the race village the day before the race, in order to ask questions on points unaddressed in the documentation sent by the organization prior to the race. I was directed to one of the main organisers. My first question regarded the toilets, a topic close to the heart of any runner, but strangely absent of both web site and booklets. I was answered word for word “you are an athlete, you can shit in the woods”. Now, first of all, this is not a way to speak to someone asking a question politely, even more to someone who paid to attend your event. Secondly, the Ultra-Marin follows the gulf, and a very large portion of the course does not offer “woods” where we can relieve ourselves. Finally, 1300 people following this rule would result in a pretty dear result for the neighbourhood. It turns out there were toilets at the main stops. Not many (about a tenth of what we would find in an event organised by Action-Challenge for instance), but sufficient for our needs I guess. The second question regarded the marking of the course. I knew from videos and blogs of past participants that one can get lost during the Ultra-Marin. And there was absolutely no information on marking in the documentation, neither on which signs would be used, and where they would be located. The answer from the organiser was “you will get info during the pre-race briefing”. Such a briefing did not exist (we were not at the Western States!), so I asked if she knew what they looked like. The answer was “you bet I do. They’ve been in my attic for a week”. When I asked if she would describe them to me, the answer was a blunt “no”. Such as delightful person. It was, unfortunately, a reflection of what was coming.
The day before the race, I also visited my local family, and I tried to sleep. The heat was making my nights pretty restless. But adding naps throughout the day probably helped. I got my race number the morning of the race. Together with the bib, we got a plastic cup, now customary in France, and a box of biscuits from La Trinitaine, one of the main sponsors of the race.
My parents and I were at the Running Village at 16:00, way before the planned starting time, 18:00, soon postponed to 19:00 because of the scorching heat. My reserves of cool liquid (500 ml of Vichy St Yorre complemented with 40 g of sugar, 500 ml of Coca Cola and 1.5 l of mineral water) were therefore not so cool anymore when we started. I met my high-school friend Emmanuel, a keen runner and tri-athlete (3 h 10 marathon a month before. Not bad at 50). He was running the Ultra-Marin for the third time. A few minutes before the start, we moved towards the first quarter of the crowd. This was a good idea since very quickly the course reaches single-line paths, and the sheer number of runners means that people are frequently reduced to walk (which is not necessarily a bad thing coming to think about it…).
Despite the heat, the first 10K was pretty fast. After 1 km, I left Emmanuel go since our objectives were different, and his pace was too fast for me. I settled around 6/6:30 per km. After Vannes’ harbour, we visited the Presqu’île de Conleau and its famous seawater pool (that features in every video of the race). The tide was low, contrary to the previous year, which meant we were not forced to walk waist-deep in water. However, there were a few parts with wet sand, mud or slippery rocks, so I was happy to have chosen trail shoes for the first half of the race (my Hoka One One Speedgoat 2). At the first stop in Arradon, I felt fantastic. The food was good. I had saucisson, TUCS, and fruits. I refilled my bottles and camelback with Vichy St Yorre, Breizh Cola and bottled mineral water (it turns out that would be the last time from the organisation). I saw Emir Belkahia, formerly of the Lapins Runners. I had followed their adventures for many years (I actually heard first about the Ultra-Marin via their videos) and they were very inspiring. It was utterly crushing to learn about the end of their story on the day after the race.
The terrain was now a bit more technical, featuring in particular roots and rocks, and I was sometimes walking. However, whenever the path was clear and not going upward too much, I was still running steadily. The landscape was absolutely stunning. The specificity of this course is that it is always at its best. Dawn, dusk or middle of the day, it is gorgeous. Even in the middle of the night, the animal noises, the rich and complex smells, make it very special. I arrived in Baden at 22:42, 30 min ahead of schedule. I would gain a further 10 min in the next leg (then it would go downhill, but I get ahead of myself). We did not get any mineral water in Baden, and had to fill our reserves from hoses. This was a warning of things to come. I was slightly worried since the previous year one of the water supplies was contaminated and many runners felt ill and had to pull out of the race.
The night was now falling and it was time to put my headlamps. This is when I discovered that I put dead batteries in my red lamp which I intended to use on my bag. It turned out to be unimportant since we barely ran on roads where vehicles could come from behind. The path from Baden to Larmor Baden was pretty much eventless, with a good mix of running and walking. The arrival in Larmor Baden was absolutely shambolic. This was one of the main rest stations, where crews were allowed to assist runners. However, contrary to the other main stops, it was not located on large sports grounds, but on a fairly small patch of land, with no car park. 35 km after the start, runners were still relatively bunched up. So we ended up with several hundreds of crews trying to park their car, and cramming in the small stop area. The volunteers were overwhelmed and rude. Some of the annoying rules that would follow us around started to be enforced. For instance, volunteers would not let us refill our flasks, but insisted on holding to the bottles, resulting in queues (apparently, they were afraid that some runners would steal entire bottles of coke or Vichy. And what if? What if a runner needs 1.5 l of fluids?). Also, there were no tables or benches. We had to settle on the ground. This was the first stop where I was attended to by my parents. They checked on me, helped refilled my flasks, and gave me some food to bring with me. My staple on-the-road food during the entire course would be slices of salted saucisson, Tucs, and candied fruits. I also had two cups of soup, which was delicious. The food was the same in all stops, provided in ready-made packaging that was microwaved on the spot: soup, mash potatoes, pasta. I appreciated the consistency. Once you decided if you liked it (or not), you did not need to revisit the issue. We also had ham, salami, Tucs, crisps, banana, apple, orange, and dried fruits. I changed my t-shirt and my buff.
My stop at Larmor Baden was quite short, around 15 min, to my parents’ surprise. I was keen on reaching Le Bono, where I planned to sleep a bit. The stretch to Le Bono felt very long despite being only 17 km. It was now pitch black. I felt good and still ran frequently, sometimes alone, sometimes with groups. Some people started to feel the pain, and I passed a first runner puking on the side of the path. I did not speak much. I believe I exchanged a few words with only one other runner. This is when I missed a sign and took the wrong path for the first time. It would not be the last. Thankfully, we were called back by people following us. I arrived at Le Bono at 3:14, still 10 min ahead of schedule. This rest station was quite good. The feeding tables were very large, with a geometry that maximised access to food. We got plastic cutlery to eat our pasta, and there was an abundance of well prepared and presented food. A glitch was the resting tent. Imagine a small tent, 8 beds, brightly lighted by powerful projectors, located in the very centre of the station, in the middle of hundreds of people chatting. Not a chance in a million to sleep. The temperature was now dropping, with a bit of a breeze. I had laughed at the presence of a windbreaker in the mandatory kit. I was now happy to have it.
During my training, I never ran past 3 am. I was therefore now heading into uncharted territories. The stretch from Le Bono to Crac’h was one of the most technical of the race, including the culminating point at a whopping 38 m above sea level… My pace had now decreased a lot. I was still jogging from time to time in the downhills, but mostly my aim was seeing through the nigh. We went through Auray and the pretty harbour of Saint Goustan. Pretty, but paved in cobblestones, which was not foot-friendly. Many people opted to sleep on benches throughout this part. I did not feel sleepy at all and chose to trod on.
We then went through residential areas. This part of the course was probably the least pretty. It was good to go through it at night. I arrived at the rest stop in Crac’h, 67 km, at 5:38 as the sun was rising. I felt nauseous and sleepy. I first tried to sleep for a few minutes. However, the only place we could lie down was tarmac, and this was not the most comfortable surface. I was also afraid I would not wake up. In the end, I opted to feed and go. I ate very nice caramel rice puddings. I asked for coffee and was told there wasn’t any. I was shown a big pile of grounded coffee packs, but the coffee machines were never delivered. Nevertheless, there was tea. I left not feeling very refreshed. At least I did not feel sick, like the poor bugger I saw puking his ring out a few hundred meters after the stop.
The last stretch before the half way point was quite slow but very nice. I had a long chat with a seasoned ultra-trailer. I noticed his UTMB t-shirt, which provided a plug-in topic of conversation. He was hardcore, participating in the ultra-trail world tour. We were going at the same pace, which reassured me. The scenery on the Locmariaquer peninsula at sunrise was absolutely stunning. By itself, this was worth the effort. However, I was now quite tired. Doubts started to creep in my mind when I realised that I was not even half-way and my feet started hurting. In Locmariaquer, we had to cross the mouth of the gulf on fast inflatable boats. This is a defining feature of this race and was exhilarating (despite the fact that I was wobbling so much on my feet the pilot decided to make me sit a the bottom of the boat rather than on the sides). Sun had now risen and it was pretty hot. The trip to Arzon was just a few kilometres, but I felt it would never end.
I reached the half-way stop only 20 min off my plan. However, most of that had been lost in the past few hours, and I really needed to rest. My parents were waiting for me, and I believe this was the only instance when they saw me arrive at a stop! The stop went smoothly. I was able to charge my GPS watch and my phone. I took a shower and changed all my clothes. My back was burnt by my running vest, so I rubbed a bit of vaseline there. I forgot to rub some elsewhere, which I would come to regret later. I got some food despite the chaotic organisation. Although this was the main stop of the race, the kitchen was tiny and only operated by two people. As before, they refused to let people serve themselves. Contrary to Le Bono rest, there was no cutlery (a family had brought plenty and gave me a plastic fork). I asked for a coffee in a cardboard cup, but I was rebuked. I should use my soft Salomon cup. The volunteer then told me that if I took a soup in a cardboard cup, I could then use it for the coffee. She ordered me “half of a soup”, waited for me to drink it, rinsed the cup with water, and only then accepted to pour me some coffee. This was completely insane. Either they banned disposable cups altogether (at the OCC, I drank soup and coke in my soft cup) or they allowed them. But allowing them for one use and not another, and forcing people through a pretend game is completely hypocritical. All that done with a super-aggressive attitude. And it is really the image of the organisation I brought home. A bunch of people full of their own importance and implementing rules for the sake of it. Not nice.
I then decided to take a little nap. No bed was available, so I lied down on gym mats. I tried to fall asleep amongst the ambient noise. I initially got microsleeps, noticeable by their dreams. After “10 mins” I decided to give up and stood, only to find my dad coming to wake me up after the agreed-upon 25 min! I think this rest was crucial to the result. I left refreshed and more hopeful. However, I made a mistake that would be costly. I traded my Speedgoat 2 for my Hoka One One Clifton 4 road shoes. The rationale was that I believed the 2nd half of the course made of tarmac and hard-paths, and the padding of my Clifton 4 was more recent than the Speedgoat’s.
The stretch to Sarzeau was quite long. We followed a quasi-fractal path, a defining feature of the granitic coast of Brittany. The weather forecast turned out to be completely wrong. It was not 28 deg C, but rather 20, and it was not sunny but grey and sometimes misty. We also had a little breeze and a few drops of water. In my state of exhaustion, I was actually cold and put on my windbreaker. It was also very lonely. At an intermediate stop, at 100 km, I rested a bit, stretched and had a number 2. This was a relief (no pun intended). I had started to worry a bit since I normally face the opposite issue. I did not wee much either, but the colour was correct, nothing like the ruby colour of the London to Cambridge. I was quite nauseous at that point, and only ate a slice of “quatre-quart”. That was the only food I absorbed between Arzon and Sarzeau, i.e. in 32 km and about 6 h.
A few km before the main stop of Sarzeau, I had the surprise to bump into Emmanuel. He had decided to take it easy and enjoy the scenery. It was nice to have someone to talk to. By then, I was no longer running and time seemed to stretch forever. We decided on a strategy that would bring us down to the finish at 7 am the next morning. I arrived in Sarzeau 3 h after my planned time. However, my original plan had already been ditched. I only wanted to finish. It did not matter much anyway. This was already the longest I ever went in a race, my previous record being the Isle of Wight challenge at 106 km. My parents were waiting for me in Sarzeau, together with cousins. I had food and tried to sleep on a plank (no beds available) despite a family of very chatty birds living in the ceiling of the gymnasium just above me. I must have succeeded since my dad had to shake me a bit to raise me from my slumber. Emmanuel had left a few minutes before, saying he would wait for me to catch up. Since by now I mostly walked, I left with my walking poles.
As any walker knows, poles are an enormous help. Not only do they help distribute the effort between legs and arms, but they also straighten the body, improving the form and limiting future pain. They also act as metronomes, allowing the hiker to walk faster and more regularly. I quickly joined up with Emmanuel. We settled on a pace and chatted for a while. After some time, he told me he wanted to slow down a bit (he did not have poles) and would join me at the next rest station. The sun was setting, and as usual, the landscape was just magical.
I arrived at Le Hezo around 22:30, without the need for a headlamp. One of the volunteers was very nice. She mentioned that she had seen me and my parents at several rest stops and was kind of following me 🙂. However, the stop was really representative of the race. Despite the retirements, there were still several hundreds of participants behind me. However, there was no toilet paper in the portaloos anymore (only 2 cabins, a hundred meters or so from the rest stop. Because we did not mind walking a bit more after 136 km), no mash potatoes, no soup, no tea, no coffee, and I had one of the last portions of pasta. Emmanuel arrived and decided to have a little nap. He told me he changed his mind and would just try to arrive in time for his train the next day. Since my parents were supposed to wait for me at the next main stop, I, therefore, decided to leave on my own.
It was now dark and I put on my headlamp. Fairly soon after leaving Le Hezo, we went through a swamp. We were ankle-deep in water and mud. Based on the smell, I suspect it was not only water and not only mud… Despite the continuous warmth of the past few days, this liquid was super cold. My toes ached for hours afterwards. After 8 km we arrived at the most ridiculous stop of the race. It was advertised as a “water-only stop”. We expected a timing point, with minimal volunteer presence, and some hose-based system of water provision. Nope. When we arrived, there was no-one in attendance (one person arrived a minute afterwards). The water supply was actually the tap of the shoe-cleaning pad of the football stadium. Basically a piece of concrete with four coarse brushes and a tap. We had no idea if the water was drinkable or not.
By now, my feet were killing me. Changing my shoes at Arzon had been a big mistake. The second half of the race was not at all more runnable than the first. The impression was given by Youtube videos from people who basically only filmed parts where they were comfortable. My Cliftons 4 were also a size smaller than my Speedgoat. Since I use them for fast races, from 10K to marathon, I generally pick road shoes that fit my feet. On the contrary, I buy my trail shoes with ultras in mind (and thus swollen feet). Finally, I had been walking probably around 70 km by now. Walking in running shoes is bad. They are not built for that. With 6 km to go until the next main stop, I felt very sleepy. I could not even remember the name of the town (Séné). And finally, I got my first hallucination. I was on a small path in a wood, and a fairly big lion was sitting in front of me, blocking the way. It was a bit scary, but I was still lucid enough to realise it must be a hallucination. So, I walked carefully forward. Sure enough, mister Leo vanished. Soon after, a runner arrived behind me and asked if I was OK. I told him how I felt and he gave me a caffeinated gel. OMG, it was sooo good. And very effective. After a couple of minutes, I was wide awake and started to run.
I arrived in Séné at 2:50. I did not see my parents and assumed they skipped this stop (we discussed this possibility before, due to the preposterous time). I tried to get some sleep but could not really get any. My feet were hurting too much. I had removed my shoes and what I discovered was not pretty. Not just my feet in fact, but also the shoes, which both split open on the front interior. I had some food, filled my flasks, put my shoes back and was about to leave when my dad saw me. They had been there since 1:30, waiting for me for 2 h! They checked on me and urged me to see the podiatrist. I removed my shoes – again – and my socks. I went outside to clean my feet. Indeed, the water supply, like the toilets, were out of the gymnasium, with no lighting, in total darkness! I do not know if people used them at all. Another of the many organisation blips. The extent of the ravages on my feet was now apparent. Seven blisters, mostly around the heels, but also a big one between toes, which was odd since I had Injiji socks on. I suspect my toes must have been stuck together because of the mud. The podiatrist was great. She carefully treated each blister, and we had a very good chat on different subjects. I then had to put back my socks. I did not have spare ones. I came to a 177 km race with only two pairs of socks. Six t-shirts, but two pairs of socks. Moron.
I left for the last 22 km of the race at 4:30. Soon, it was sunrise. These kilometres were the slowest of the race for me. I told my parents I would arrive in Vannes at 9:30, so I had plenty of time. And I was knackered. This was my second night without sleep. After 8 km, I started to fall asleep on my feet. Every couple of minutes I would have completely nonsensical dreams. I forced myself to speed up in order to wake up. But then, I started to hallucinate badly. I saw faces on the trees and then people were coming out of the trees and the rocks. Even when I stopped, breathed and forced myself to acknowledge the hallucinations, trees and rocks kept the shapes of people and animals. I could not go on. I left the path and lied down on a beach to sleep for a while. I stayed there for about 20 min, and it did me a lot of good. I got back on my feet and began the last leg of my journey. To keep awake, I chatted with another participant. A young lad that had feet in an even worse state than mine. We moved together for a while. I did not stop in any of the rest points between Séné and Vannes. It was time to finish this. Notably, because the weather took a turn for the worse and we got a very heavy shower. I then noticed I would miss my planned arrival time so I sped up. For a few kilometres, I even alternated running and walking again. But then I had to stop for an emergency pit-stop. It was pretty hard to find the right spot since we were on large paths bordered by barbed wire on both sides. I finally found the right place, and then discovered something I did not notice before, because of the extreme feet pain that overshadowed everything. I had extensive chaffing of the thighs and all the nether parts. In addition, my butt cheeks had got stuck together for I don’t know how many km, and this caused massive burns on both of them. But I restarted, ready to pounce. I only had to stop once to remove bandages from the podiatrist that got detached and were actually causing more damages.
I finished at 9:44 on Sunday, more than 5 hours after my initial plan, but 3 h 15 ahead of the cut-off. I ran hard the last 300 metres and mercilessly overtook a poor lad who was limping to the finish line.
Since it was the 15th anniversary of the race, everyone got a finisher medal (there are normally no finisher medals, as in many French races). As in the UTMB, we also got a very nice finisher vest.
1377 people registered for the race, and 1265 started it. 425 people had to retire from the race, which is much better than in 2018, when 60 % of people dropped out. I was 668 of the 840 finishers, 606 male out of 1115 starters (747 finishers), 193 our of 328 master 2 (235 finishers). The histogram below shows the arrivals, binned by hours. Interestingly it is a bi-modal distribution, with modes at 32 and 38 hours. My initial aim was 32 hours, and my real finish time was 38 hours…
The last 22 km had completely annihilated the nice work of the podiatrist. Not only the state of my previous blisters had worsened, but I also had gained three new ones, including a fairly large blood blister underneath the callus of my right heel (to be fair, the podiatrist had been horrified by those calluses and begged me to seek professional help). So when I arrived back at the flat, instead of crashing on the bed and sleep, I decided to “treat” my feet. This included a pair of scissors and some toilet paper… It won’t come as a surprise that I had to visit the GP once back home. I was prescribed one week of antibiotics and given a few sheets of the most marvellous product ever: DuoDerm hydrocolloid dressing. It deserves its own blog post and I will not go further here.
So here I am. I did it. I did 1) the overnight racing, 2) the 100 miles course. It was tough, physically and mentally. However, the mental part was mostly related to hallucinations. At NO POINT did I envision to quit. I believe this was a defining moment for me. Ever since my first collapse after 25 km of the London to Cambridge 2016, I always worried about not finishing the races. This was based on nothing whatsoever. I always finished well ahead of time limits (including at the London to Cambridge). So that’s it. Now I know that I can finish no matter the length and the duration. The CCC will still be very hard since the time limit is fairly strict (26 h 30), but I will do my best, and I will certainly not give up. They will have to drag me off the track screaming and kicking.

L'Ultra-Marin figure sur ma liste de courses à faire depuis longtemps. Ma famille est originaire de Plumergat, un petit village près de Vannes où se situent le début et la fin de la manifestation principale. Je connais l'endroit et j'en suis amoureux. L'Ultra-Marin est en fait un ensemble de courses à pied (36 km, 56 km, 87 km, 177 km) et quelques marches complémentaires. La manifestation principale est une boucle complète autour du golfe du Morbihan. Je n'avais jamais couru une telle distance auparavant. Cependant, à la fin du mois d'août, je participerai à l'UTMB CCC. Bien que plus courte (101 km), la course compte 6100 m de dénivelé positif, ce qui me prendra plus d'une journée à compléter. Je cherchais donc quelque chose qui me permettrait de faire l'expérience de la course de nuit. J'étais aussi à la recherche de 5 points ITRA. Mon but ultime est en effet de faire la course principale de l'UTMB. Pour participer à la loterie, il me fallait 15 points ITRA en 3 courses maximum (10 en 2 courses avec les nouvelles règles). La CCC m'en fournira 5 (en supposant que je le termine dans le temps imparti, ce qui est un défi de taille). L'Ultra-Marin complet me donnerait 5 points supplémentaires.
Je suis arrivé à Vannes quelques jours avant la course, avec mes parents, qui allaient m'accompagner pendant l'épreuve. Nous avions loué un joli appartement par AirBnB. Il était proche du centre-ville, où se trouvait le village de course. Étant situé dans un vieux bâtiment en pierre, il est resté frais pendant la canicule que nous traversions. En effet, les prévisions météo pour les jours de course étaient infernales, entre 28 et 30 degrés le jour, minimum 20 la nuit. Cela m'a un peu inquiété, puisque la seule course dont j'ai été disqualifié, le Trail des Beaumes de Venise, s'était déroulée dans des conditions similaires.
J'ai visité le village de course la veille de la course, afin de poser des questions sur les points non abordés dans la documentation envoyée par l'organisation avant la course. J'ai été dirigé vers l'un des principaux organisateurs. Ma première question concernait les toilettes, un sujet proche du cœur de tout coureur, mais étrangement absent à la fois du site web et des livrets de règlement. On m'a répondu mot pour mot « tu es un athlète, tu peux chier dans les bois ». Tout d'abord, ce n'est pas une façon de parler à quelqu'un qui pose une question poliment, encore moins à quelqu'un qui a payé pour participer à votre événement. Deuxièmement, l'Ultra-Marin suit le golfe, et une très grande partie du parcours n'offre pas de « bois » où l'on peut faire ses besoins. Finalement, 1300 personnes suivant cette règle se traduirait par un résultat assez désastreux pour les quartiers environnant. Il s'avèra qu'il y avait des toilettes dans les principaux arrêts. Pas beaucoup (environ un dixième de ce que nous trouverions dans un événement organisé par Action-Challenge par exemple), mais suffisant pour nos besoins j'imagine. La deuxième question concernait la signalisation sur le parcours. Je savais par les vidéos et les blogs des anciens participants que l'on peut se perdre pendant l'Ultra-Marin. Et il n'y avait absolument aucune information sur la signalisation dans la documentation, ni sur les panneaux qui seraient utilisés, ni sur l'endroit où ils seraient placés. La réponse de l'organisateur a été « vous recevrez des informations pendant le briefing d'avant-course ». Une telle séance d'information n'existe bien évidemment pas (nous ne sommes pas au Western States !), alors je lui demande si elle savait à quoi ils ressemblaient. La réponse a été : « Bien sûr que oui. Ils sont dans mon grenier depuis une semaine ». Quand je lui ai demandé si elle voulait bien me les décrire, la réponse a été un « non » catégorique. Quelle personne charmante. C'était malheureusement le reflet de ce qui nous attendait.
La veille de la course, j'ai également rendu visite à ma famille vivant aux alentours et j'ai essayé de dormir. La chaleur rendait mes nuits plutôt agitées. Mais ajouter des siestes tout au long de la journée a probablement aidé. J'ai obtenu mon dossard le matin de la course. Avec le dossard, nous avons reçu un gobelet en plastique, désormais traditionnel en France, et une boîte de biscuits de La Trinitaine, l'un des principaux sponsors de la course.
Mes parents et moi étions au Village de course à 16 h, bien avant l'heure de départ prévue, soit 18 h, bientôt reportée à 19 h en raison de la chaleur torride. Mes réserves de liquide frais (500 ml de Vichy St Yorre supplémentés par 40 g de sucre, 500 ml de Coca Cola et 1,5 l d'eau minérale) n'étaient donc plus si fraîches au départ. J'ai rencontré mon camarade de lycée Emmanuel, coureur passionné et triathlète (marathon en 3 h 10 un mois auparavant, pas mal à 50 ans). Il participait à l'Ultra-Marin pour la troisième fois. Quelques minutes avant le départ, nous nous sommes dirigés vers l'avant de la foule. C'était une bonne idée car très rapidement le parcours atteint des sentiers monolignes, et le nombre de coureurs fait que les gens sont souvent réduits à marcher (ce qui n'est pas forcément une mauvaise chose quand on y pense...).
Malgré la chaleur, les premiers 10 km on été assez rapides. Après 1 km, j'ai laissé partir Emmanuel car nos objectifs étaient différents, et son rythme était trop rapide pour moi. Je me suis installé aux alentours de 6/6min30 par km. Après le port de Vannes, nous avons visité la Presqu'île de Conleau et sa célèbre piscine d'eau de mer (qui figure dans chaque vidéo de la course). La marée était basse, contrairement à l'année précédente, ce qui signifie que nous n'étions pas obligés de marcher dans l'eau jusqu'à la taille. Cependant, il y avait quelques parties avec du sable mouillé, de la boue ou des rochers glissants, j'étais donc heureux d'avoir choisi des chaussures de trail pour la première moitié de la course (mes Hoka One One Speedgoat 2). Au premier arrêt à Arradon, je me sentais super bien. La nourriture était bonne. J'ai mangé du saucussob, des TUCS et des fruits. J'ai rechargé mes bouteilles et mon camelback avec de la Vichy St Yorre, du Breizh Cola et de l'eau minérale en bouteille (il s'avèrait que ce serait la dernière fois venant de l'organisation). J'ai vu Emir Belkahia, anciennement des Lapins Runners. J'ai suivi leurs aventures pendant de nombreuses années (j'ai d'abord entendu parler de l'Ultra-Marin dans leurs vidéos) et ils ont été une grande source d'inspiration. C'était vraiment désolant d'apprendre la fin de leur histoire au lendemain de la course.
Le terrain était maintenant un peu plus technique, avec notamment des racines et des cailloux, et je marchais parfois. Cependant, chaque fois que le chemin était dégagé et ne montait pas trop, j'essayais tout de même de courir. Le paysage était absolument époustouflant. La spécificité de cette course est qu'elle est toujours à son plus beau. L'aube, le crépuscule ou le milieu de la journée, c'est magnifique. Même au milieu de la nuit, les bruits d'animaux, les odeurs riches et complexes la rendent très spéciale. Je suis arrivé à Baden à 22 h 42, 30 min plus tôt que prévu. Je gagnerais encore 10 minutes durant la prochaine étape (puis ça diminuerait, mais je m'avance). Nous n'avons pas eu d'eau minérale à Baden, et nous avons dû remplir nos réserves à partir de tuyaux. C'était une prémonition des choses à venir. J'étais un peu inquiet car l'année précédente l'une des réserves d'eau était contaminée et beaucoup de coureurs tombèrent malades et durent abandonner la course.
La nuit tombait et il était temps de mettre mes frontales. C'est alors que j'ai découvert que j'avais mis des piles vides dans la lampe rouge que j'avais l'intention d'utiliser sur mon sac. Cela s'est avéré sans importance puisque nous avons à peine couru sur des routes où des véhicules pouvaient venir par l'arrière. Le chemin de Baden à Larmor Baden n'a pas présenté de difficulté, avec un bon mélange de course et de marche. L'arrivée à Larmor Baden était absolument chaotique. C'était l'un des arrèts majeurs, où les équipes d'assistance étaient autorisées à aider les coureurs. Cependant, contrairement aux autres arrêts principaux, il n'était pas situé sur un grand terrain de sport, mais sur un terrain relativement petit, sans parking. 35 km après le départ, les coureurs étaient encore relativement groupés. Nous nous sommes donc retrouvés avec plusieurs centaines d'équipes qui essayaient de garer leur voiture, et qui s'entassaient dans la petite zone d'arrêt. Les bénévoles étaient débordés et impolis. Certaines des règles ennuyeuses qui nous suivraient ont commencé à être appliquées. Par exemple, les bénévoles ne nous laissaient pas remplir nos flacons, mais insistaient pour s'accrocher aux bouteilles, ce qui entraînait des files d'attente (apparemment, ils avaient peur que certains coureurs volent des bouteilles entières de coke ou de Vichy. Et si c'était le cas ? Que faire si un coureur a besoin de 1,5 l de liquide ?) De plus, il n'y avait ni tables ni bancs. Nous avons dû nous installer au sol. C'était le premier arrêt où mes parents s'occupaient de moi. Ils m'ont examiné, m'ont aidé à remplir mes flacons et m'ont donné de la nourriture à emporter. Mes aliments de base sur la route pendant toute la durée de la course serait des tranches de saucisson salé, des Tucs, et des fruits confits. J'ai aussi pris deux tasses de soupe, qui était délicieuse. La nourriture était la même à tous les arrêts, fournie dans des emballages prêts à l'emploi et cuite au micro-ondes sur place : soupe, purée de pommes de terre, pâtes. J'ai apprécié la constance. Une fois que vous aviez décidé si vous l'aimiez (ou non), vous n'aviez pas besoin de réexaminer la question. Nous avons aussi mangé du jambon, du salami, des Tucs, des chips, des bananes, des pommes, des oranges et des fruits secs. J'ai changé mon t-shirt et mon buff.
Mon arrêt à Larmor Baden a été assez court, environ 15 min, à la surprise de mes parents. J'avais hâte d'arriver au Bono, où j'avais prévu de dormir un peu. Le trajet jusqu'au Bono s'est avéré très long, bien qu'il ne soit que de 17 km. Il faisait maintenant nuit noire. Je me sentais bien et je courais encore fréquemment, parfois seul, parfois en groupe. Certaines personnes ont commencé à souffrir, et j'ai croisé un premier coureur qui vomissait sur le côté du chemin. Je ne parlais pas beaucoup. Je crois que j'ai échangé quelques mots avec un seul autre coureur. C'est alors que j'ai raté un panneau et pris le mauvais chemin pour la première fois. Ce ne sera pas la dernière. Heureusement, nous avons été rappelés par les coureurs qui nous suivaient. Je suis arrivé au Bono à 3 h 14, avec toujours 10 min d'avance. Ce poste de repos était assez bon. Les tables d'alimentation étaient très grandes, avec une géométrie qui maximisait l'accès à la nourriture. Nous avons eu des couverts en plastique pour manger nos pâtes, et il y avait une abondance de nourriture bien préparée et présentée. Le problème était la tente de repos. Imaginez une petite tente, avec 8 lits, éclairée par de puissants projecteurs, située en plein centre de l'arrèt, au milieu de centaines de personnes en train de discuter. Aucune chance sur un million de dormir. La température baissait maintenant, avec un peu de vent. Je m'étais moqué de la présence d'un coupe-vent dans le kit obligatoire. J'étais maintenant heureux de l'avoir.
Pendant mon entraînement, je n'avais jamais couru au-delà de 3 heures du matin. Je me dirigeais donc maintenant vers des territoires inexplorés. Le parcours du Bono à Crac'h a été l'un des plus techniques de la course, avec un point culminant à une altitude incroyable de 38 m au-dessus du niveau de la mer... Mon rythme avait maintenant beaucoup diminué. Je faisais encore du jogging de temps en temps dans les descentes, mais mon but était surtout de passer cette nuit. Nous avons traversé Auray et le joli port de Saint Goustan. Joli, mais pavée de gros galets, ce qui n'était pas très agréable pour les pieds. Beaucoup de gens ont choisi de dormir sur des bancs aux alentours. Je ne me sentais pas du tout somnolent et j'ai choisi de continuer à marcher.
Nous avons ensuite traversé des zones résidentielles. Cette partie du parcours était probablement la moins jolie. C'était bien d'y passer de nuit. J'arrivais à l'arrêt de Crac'h, 67 km, à 5 h 38 alors que le soleil se levait. Je me sentais nauséeux et somnolent. J'ai d'abord essayé de dormir quelques minutes. Cependant, le seul endroit où nous pouvions nous allonger était le goudron, et ce n'était pas la surface la plus confortable. J'avais aussi peur de ne pas me réveiller. Au final, j'ai choisi de me nourrir et de partir. J'ai mangé de très bons riz au lait au caramel. J'ai demandé du café et on m'a dit qu'il n'y en avait pas. On m'a montré une grosse pile de paquets de café moulus, mais les machines à café n'avaient jamais été livrées. Mais il y avait du thé. Je suis parti sans me sentir très rafraîchi. Au moins, je ne me sentais pas malade, comme le pauvre bougre que j'ai vu vomir tout ce qu'il pouvait quelques centaines de mètres après l'arrêt.
La dernière partie avant la mi-course a été assez lente, mais très belle. J'ai eu une longue discussion avec un ultra-trailer expérimenté. J'avais remarqué son t-shirt de l'UTMB, ce qui a fourni un sujet de conversation. Il était hardcore, participant à l'ultra-trail world tour. Nous allions au même rythme, ce qui m'a rassuré. Le paysage de la péninsule de Locmariaquer au lever du soleil était absolument époustouflant. À lui seul, cet effort en valait la peine. Cependant, j'étais maintenant assez fatigué. Des doutes m'envahissaient, quand je réalisais que je n'étais même pas à mi-chemin et que mes pieds commençaient à me faire mal. A Locmariaquer, nous avons dû traverser l'embouchure du golfe sur des zodiacs rapides. C'est une caractéristique de cette course, et c'était exaltant (en dépit du fait que je tremblais tellement sur mes pieds que le pilote a décidé de me faire asseoir au fond du bateau plutôt que sur les boudins). Le soleil était maintenant levé et il faisait assez chaud. Le voyage à Arzon n'était que de quelques kilomètres, mais j'avais le sentiment que qu'il ne finirait jamais.
J'ai atteint l'arrêt de mi-course avec seulement 20 minutes de retard sur mon plan. Cependant, la plupart d'entre elles avaient été perdues ces dernières heures, et j'avais vraiment besoin de me reposer. Mes parents m'attendaient, et je crois que c'est la seule fois où ils m'ont vu arriver à un arrêt ! L'arrêt s'est bien passé. J'ai pu recharger ma montre GPS et mon téléphone. J'ai pris une douche et changé tous mes vêtements. Mon dos était brûlé par ma veste de course, j'ai donc frotté un peu de vaseline. J'ai oublié d'en frotter ailleurs, ce que je regretterais plus tard. J'ai obtenu de la nourriture malgré l'organisation chaotique. Bien qu'il s'agisse de l'arrêt principal de la course, la cuisine était minuscule et n'était desservie que par deux personnes. Comme auparavant, ils refusaient de laisser les gens se servir eux-mêmes. Contrairement au repos du Bono, il n'y avait pas de couverts (une famille en avait apporté des stocks et m'a donné une fourchette en plastique). J'ai demandé un café dans une tasse en carton, mais on m'a réprimandé. Je devais utiliser mon gobelet mou Salomon. La bénévole m'a alors dit que si je prenais une soupe dans une tasse en carton, je pourrais l'utiliser pour le café. Elle m'a commandé « la moitié d'une soupe », a attendu que je la boive, a rincé la tasse avec de l'eau et n'a accepté de me verser du café qu'après. C'était complètement fou. Soit ils interdisaient complètement les tasses jetables (à l'OCC, j'ai bu de la soupe et du coca dans mon gobelet mou), soit ils les autorisaient. Mais les autoriser pour un usage et non pour un autre, et forcer les gens à faire semblant est totalement hypocrite. Tout cela avec une attitude super-agressive. Et c'est vraiment l'image de l'organisation que j'ai gardé de cette course. Un groupe de personnes pleines de leur propre importance et qui mettent en œuvre des règles pour le plaisir de le faire. Ce n'est pas cool.
J'ai alors décidé de faire une petite sieste. Il n'y avait pas de lit disponible, je me suis donc allongé sur des tapis de gymnastique. J'ai essayé de m'endormir malgré le bruit ambiant. J'ai d'abord fait des micro-sommeils, remarcable par les rêves. Après « 10 minutes », j'ai décidé d'abandonner et je me suis levé, au moment où mon père venait me réveiller après les 25 minutes convenues ! Je pense que ce repos a été crucial pour le résultat final. Je suis reparti rafraîchi et plein d'espoir. Cependant, j'ai fait une erreur qui me couterait. J'ai échangé mes Speedgoat 2 contre mes chaussures de route Hoka One One One Clifton 4. L'idée (fause) était que la 2ème moitié du parcours était faite de goudron et de chemins durs, et le rembourrage de ma Clifton 4 était plus récent que celui de la Speedgoat.
Le trajet jusqu'à Sarzeau a été assez long. Nous avons suivi une voie quasi fractale, trait caractéristique de la côte granitique de Bretagne. Les prévisions météorologiques se sont avérées complètement fausses. Il ne faisait pas 28 degrés Celsius, mais plutôt 20 degrés Celsius, et le temps n'était pas ensoleillé mais gris et parfois brumeux. Nous avons aussi eu un peu de brise et quelques gouttes d'eau. Dans mon état d'épuisement, j'avais en fait froid et j'ai mis mon coupe-vent. C'était aussi un parcour s très solitaire. A une étape intermédiaire à 100 km, je me suis reposé un peu, je me suis étiré et j'ai fait une grosse commission. C'était un soulagement. Je commencais à m'inquiéter un peu, car j'ai l'habitude d'affronter le problème inverse. Je ne faisais pas beaucou pipi non plus, mais la couleur était correcte. Rien à voir avec le rubis du Londres-Cambridge. Je me sentais assez nauséeux à ce moment-là et je n'ai mangé qu'une tranche de quatre-quart. Ce serait la seule nourriture ingérée entre Arzon et Sarzeau, c.-à-d. en 32 km et près de 6 h.
Quelques kilomètres avant l'arrêt majeur de Sarzeau, j'ai eu la surprise de rejoindre Emmanuel. Il avait décidé de la prendre cool et de profiter du paysage. C'était sympa d'avoir quelqu'un à qui parler. À ce moment-là, je ne courais plus et le temps semblait s'étirer sans din. Nous avons décidé d'une stratégie qui nous amènerait à l'arrivée à 7 h du matin le lendemain. Je suis arrivé à Sarzeau 3 h après l'heure prévue. Cependant, mon plan initial avait déjà été abandonné. Je voulais juste finir. De toute façon, cela n'avait pas beaucoup d'importance. C'était déjà le plus long trajet que j'aie jamais fait en course, mon record précédent étant le défi de l'île de Wight à 106 km. Mes parents m'attendaient à Sarzeau, avec des cousins. J'ai mangé et j'ai essayé de dormir sur une planche (pas de lits disponibles) malgré une famille d'oiseaux très bavards vivant dans le plafond du gymnase juste au-dessus de moi. J'ai dû réussir puisque mon père a dû me secouer un peu pour me réveiller. Emmanuel était parti quelques minutes auparavant, disant qu'il attendrait que je le rattrape. Comme désormais je marchais principalement, je suis reparti avec mes bâtons de marche.
Comme tout marcheur le sait, les bâtons sont d'une grande aide. Non seulement ils aident à répartir l'effort entre les jambes et les bras, mais ils allongent aussi le corps, améliorent la forme et limitent les douleurs futures. Its jouent également le rôle de métronomes, permettant au randonneur de marcher plus vite et plus régulièrement. J'ai vite rejoint Emmanuel. Nous nous avons décidé d'un rythme et avons bavardé pendant un moment. Après un certain temps, il m'a dit qu'il voulait ralentir un peu (il n'avait pas de batons) et qu'il me rejoindrait au prochain arrèt. Le soleil se couchait et, comme d'habitude, le paysage était tout simplement magique.
J'arrivais au Hezo vers 22 h 30, sans avoir besoin de lampe frontale. L'une des bénévoles était très gentille. Elle m'a dit qu'elle nous avait vus, moi et mes parents, à plusieurs aires de repos et qu'en quelque sorte elle me suivait :-) Cependant, l'étape était vraiment représentative de la course. Malgré les abandons, il y avait encore plusieurs centaines de participants derrière moi. Cependant, il n'y avait plus de papier hygiénique dans les WC (seulement 2 cabines, à une centaine de mètres de l'aire de repos. Parce que ça ne nous dérangeait pas de marcher un peu plus après 136 km), plus de purée, plus de soupe, pas de thé, pas de café, et j'ai pris une des dernières portions de pâtes. Emmanuel est arrivé et a décidé de faire une petite sieste. Il m'a dit qu'il avait changé d'avis et qu'il essaierait d'arriver à temps pour son train le lendemain. Comme mes parents devaient m'attendre au prochain arrêt majeur, j'ai donc décidé de partir seul.
Il faisait maintenant nuit et j'ai allumé ma lampe frontale. Peu après avoir quitté Le Hezo, nous avons traversé un marais. Nous étions enfoncées dans l'eau et la boue jusqu'aux chevilles. D'après l'odeur, je soupçonne que ce n'était pas seulement de l'eau et pas seulement de la boue... Malgré la chaleur continue des derniers jours, ce liquide était très froid. J'ai eu mal aux orteils pendant des heures après. Après 8 km, nous sommes arrivés à l'arrêt le plus ridicule de la course. Il était annoncée comme un « point d'eau uniquement ». Nous nous attendions à un point de timing, avec une présence minimale de bénévoles et un système d'approvisionnement en eau au moyen de tuyaux. Non, non. Quand nous sommes arrivés, il n'y avait personne (une personne est arrivée une minute plus tard). L'approvisionnement en eau était en fait le robinet du point de nettoyage des chaussures du stade de football. Il s'agit essentiellement d'un morceau de béton avec quatre brosses grossières et un robinet. Nous ne savions pas si l'eau était potable ou non.
À ce point mes pieds me faisaient atrocement souffrir. Changer mes chaussures à Arzon avait été une grosse erreur. La deuxième moitié de la course n'était pas du tout plus facile à courir que la première. L'impression était donnée par des vidéos Youtube de personnes qui n'ont filmé que les parties où elles étaient à l'aise. Mrd Clifton 4 étaient plus petites que mes Speedgoat. Comme je les utilise pour les courses rapides, du 10 km au marathon, je choisis généralement des chaussures de route qui me vont bien. Au contraire, j'achète mes chaussures de trail avec les ultras en tête (et donc des pieds enflés). Finalement, j'avais probablement parcouru environ 70 km à ce point. Marcher avec des chaussures de course, n'est pas recommandé. Elles ne sont pas faite pour ça. À 6 km de l'arrêt majeur suivant, j'avais très sommeil. Je ne me souvenais même pas du nom de la ville (Séné). Et finalement, j'ai eu ma première hallucination. J'étais sur un petit chemin dans un bois, et un assez gros lion était assis devant moi, bloquant le chemin. C'était un peu effrayant, mais j'étais quand même assez lucide pour réaliser que ça devait être une hallucination. Alors, je suis allé prudemment de l'avant. Sans surprise, monsieur Leo a disparu. Peu après, un coureur est arrivé derrière moi et m'a demandé si j'allais bien. Je lui ai dit ce que je ressentais et il m'a donné un gel caféiné. Oooohh, il était tellement bon. Et très efficace. Après quelques minutes, j'étais bien réveillé et j'ai commencé à courir.
Je suis arrivé à Séné à 2 h 50. Je n'ai pas vu mes parents et j'ai supposé qu'ils avaient sauté cet arrêt (nous avons discuté de cette possibilité auparavant, à cause du timing délirant). J'ai essayé de dormir un peu, mais je n'arrivais pas trouver le sommeil. J'avais trop mal aux pieds. J'avais enlevé mes chaussures et ce que j'ai découvert n'était pas joli. Pas seulement mes pieds en fait, mais aussi les chaussures, qui s'étaient toutes deux ouverte à l'avant interne. J'ai mangé, rempli mes flacons, remis mes chaussures et j'étais sur le point de partir quand mon père m'a vu. Ils étaient en fait là depuis 1 h 30, m'avaient attendu pendant 2 h. Ils ont vérifié mon état général et m'ont pressé de voir un podologue. J'ai enlevé mes chaussures - encore une fois - et mes chaussettes. Je suis sorti me laver les pieds. En effet, l'alimentation en eau, comme les toilettes, étaient hors du gymnase, sans éclairage aucun, dans l'obscurité totale ! Je ne sais pas si les gens s'en sont servis. Un autre des nombreux blips de l'organisation. L'ampleur des ravages sur mes pieds était maintenant évident. Sept ampoules, principalement autour des talons, mais aussi une grosse entre les orteils, ce qui était bizarre depuis que j'avais des chaussettes Injiji. Je suppose que mes orteils ont dû être collés ensemble à cause de la boue. La podologue était géniale. Elle a soigneusement traité chaque ampoule, et nous avons eu une bonne conversation sur différents sujets. J'ai ensuite dû remettre mes chaussettes. Je n'en avais pas en réserve. Je suis venu à une course de 177 km avec seulement deux paires de chaussettes. Six t-shirts, mais deux paires de chaussettes. Abruti.
Je suis reparti pour les derniers 22 km de la course à 4 h 30. Bientôt le soleil s'est levé. Ces kms ont été les plus lents de la course pour moi. J'ai dit à mes parents que j'arriverais à Vannes à 9 h 30, alors j'avais tout mon temps. Et j'étais crevé. C'était ma deuxième nuit sans sommeil. Après 8 km, j'ai commencé à m'endormir sur mes pieds. Toutes les deux minutes, j'avais des rêves complètement absurdes. Je me suis forcé à accélérer pour me réveiller. Mais ensuite, j'ai commencé à avoir des hallucinations. J'ai vu des visages sur les arbres, puis des gens sont sortis des arbres et des rochers. Même quand je m'arrêtais, respirais et me forçais à reconnaître les hallucinations, les arbres et les rochers gardaient la forme des gens et des animaux. Je ne pouvais pas continuer. J'ai quitté le chemin et je me suis allongé sur une plage pour dormir un moment. J'y suis resté une vingtaine de minutes, et ça m'a fait beaucoup de bien. Je me suis remis sur pied et j'ai commencé le dernier voyage. Pour rester éveillé, j'ai discuté avec un autre participant. Un jeune homme qui avait les pieds dans un état encore pire que le mien. On a voyagé ensemble pendant un moment. Je ne me suis arrêté dans aucun des points de repos entre Séné et Vannes. Il était temps d'en finir. Notamment parce que le temps s'était dégradé et que nous nous sommes payé une forte averse. J'ai alors remarqué que je manquerais l'heure d'arrivée prévue, alors j'ai accéléré. Pendant quelques kilomètres j'ai même alterné la course et la marche. Mais j'ai dû m'arrêter pour un pit-stop en urgence. Ça a été assez difficile de trouver l'emplacement adéquat car nous étions sur de grands chemins bordés de barbelés des deux côtés. J'ai finalement trouvé le bon endroit, puis j'ai découvert quelque chose que je n'avais pas remarqué auparavant, à cause de la douleur extrême aux pieds qui éclipsait tout. J'avais des brûlures étendues des cuisses et de toutes les autres parties de la région. De plus, mes fesses étaient restées collées depuis je ne sais combien de kilomètres, ce qui avait causé des brûlures massives sur les deux. Mais je suis reparti, prêt à bondir. Je n'ai dû m'arrêter qu'une seule fois pour enlever les bandages de la podologue qui s'étaient détachés et qui causaient en fait plus de dommages.
J'ai terminé à 9 h 44 dimanche, plus de 5 heures après mon plan initial, mais 3 h 15 avant la barrière horaire. J'ai couru les 300 derniers mètres et ai dépassé impitoyablement un pauvre garçon qui boitait vers la ligne d'arrivée.
Comme c'était le 15ème anniversaire de la course, tout le monde a reçu une médaille finisher (il n'y a normalement pas de médaille finisher, comme dans beaucoup de courses françaises). Comme à l'UTMB, nous avons aussi une très belle veste de finisseur.
1377 personnes s'étaient inscrites à la course, et 1265 se sont présentées sur la ligne de départ. 425 personnes ont dû abandonner la course, ce qui est bien mieux qu'en 2018, où 60 % des participants avaient abandonné. J'étais 668 des 840 arrivants, 606 sur 1115 hommes partants (747 finishers), 193 sur 328 master 2 (235 finishers). L'histogramme ci-dessous montre les arrivées, classées par heures. Il est intéressant de noter qu'il s'agit d'une distribution bimodale, avec des modes à 32 et 38 heures. Mon objectif initial était de 32 heures, et mon temps réel à l'arrivée était de 38 heures....
Les derniers 22 km ont complètement annihilé le beau travail de la podologue. Non seulement l'état de mes ampoules précédentes s'était aggravé, mais j'en avais aussi trois nouvelles, dont une assez grosse ampoule sanguine sous le cal du talon droit (pour être honnête, la podologue avait été horrifié par ces callosités et m'avait supplié de consulter un professionnel). Alors quand je suis revenu à l'appartement, au lieu de m'effondre sur le lit et de dormir, j'ai décidé de « soigner » mes pieds. Cela incluait une paire de ciseaux et du papier hygiénique.... Il n'est pas surprenant que j'aie dû rendre visite au médecin généraliste une fois de retour chez moi. On m'a prescrit une semaine d'antibiotiques et on m'a donné quelques feuilles du produit le plus merveilleux qui soit : Pansement hydrocolloïde DuoDerm. Il mérite sa propre entrée de blog et je n'en dirait pas plus ici.
Alors nous y voilà. Je l'ai fait. J'ai fait 1) la course de nuit, 2) le parcours de 100 milles. C'était difficile, physiquement et mentalement. Cependant, la partie mentale était surtout liée aux hallucinations. À AUCUN POINT, je n'ai envisagé d'abandonner. Je crois que cela a été un moment déterminant pour moi. Depuis mon effondrement initial après 25 km du Londres-Cambridge 2016, j'ai toujours eu peur de ne pas finir les courses. Cela ne reposait sur rien du tout. J'ai toujours fini bien avant les limites de temps (y compris au Londres-Cambridge). Alors, ça suffit. Maintenant, je sais que je peux finir, peu importe la longueur et la durée. La CCC sera encore très difficile, puisque le délai est assez strict (26 h 30), mais je ferai de mon mieux, et je n'abandonnerai certainement pas. Ils vont devoir me sortir de la piste en me trainant.

La table est rectangulaire. Au centre sont réparties des piles nettes de brochures et dépliants colorés. Nous nous sommes naturellement placés sur les trois côtés où les chaises font face à des formulaires et des photocopies de mauvaise qualité présentant la sélection de la quinzaine. Trois pots en plastique contiennent des poignées de mini-stylos. La table est légèrement trop basse. J’ai l’impression passagère d’être de retour au centre aéré, 40 ans en arrière.
C’est ma première fois. Curieux, je détaille l’assistance, peut-être un peu trop. Je remarque que la plupart d’entre nous gardent les yeux baissés. La diversité d’age, de langage corporel et de tenue vestimentaire est remarquable. Je me suis soigneusement préparé ce matin. Pantalon à pinces bleu nuit, chemisette rose pale, veste en lin marron. Ceinture et chaussures en cuir de même nuance. Pas de costume, pas de cravate, mais pas non plus le survêtement du dimanche. Du « smart-casual » comme on dit ici.
La réunion est à midi, mais notre employée de maison est venue à 9 h, comme tous les lundi. Voulant éviter les questions sur un départ tardif, je suis parti juste après son arrivée. J’ai de la chance, il fait beau. J’ai garé la voiture au centre-ville, et puis j’ai marché des heures, explorant rues et parcs que j’ai ignoré durant 20 ans. Je passe devant le bâtiment trois fois. Il est presque l’heure, mais j’ai légèrement honte d’attendre devant la porte.
Une fois entrés, nos identités sont vérifiées, et après quelques minutes, nous sommes dirigés vers la fameuse table. Il y a une jeune femme enceinte, entre 6 et 8 mois je pense. Elle doit préparer l’après maternité. Un très jeune homme sort probablement du lycée et se cherche un futur. En face de moi se trouve un homme de la cinquantaine, cheveux blancs bien peignés, embonpoint, jogging et polo propres, lunettes. Pourquoi est-il là ? Un sans-abri de longue durée, un étranger ne parlant quasiment pas la langue, et deux hommes d’âge moyen, un peu mal fagotés, complètent notre groupe.
L’animatrice arrive, les bras chargés de cahiers. Elle commence par 10 minutes de descriptions administratives obligatoires qu’elle doit régurgiter avant chaque réunion. Puis vient une première série de questions sur les progrès de chacun, avec collection des formulaires adéquats. Je suis excusé, ne pouvant avoir fait de progrès. La réunion se termine par la séquence « formation », avec un tour de table sur comment se préparer pour une entrevue. Les réponses sont variées, et très complètes (« se laver les dents » répond l’un d’entre nous).
Je suis le dernier à parler. Il n’y a plus grand chose à ajouter. À mon arrivée, bon élève, je m’étais naturellement placé près de la « maitresse ». À moins que ce soit l’habitude du premier rang dans les conférences internationales, celui reservé aux intervenants et aux grands pontes, qui ont toujours le droit à la première question.
Je réalise trop tard qu’il n’y a pas de rang. La place ne compte pas, puisque nous avons tous la même, la dernière. Le vêtement n’impressione personne. Il n’y a personne à impressioner. J’ai 50 ans, et je suis sans emploi.
Translation - English The rectangular table
The table is rectangular. Neat piles of bright colored brochures and leaflets are spread in the centre. We have naturally moved on the three sides where chairs are facing forms and bad-quality photocopies, presenting the biweekly selection. Three plastic pots contain handfuls of mini-biros. The table is slightly too low and I feel transported back to the after-school club, 40 years ago.
This is my first time. Curious, I detail the audience, perhaps with too much attention. I notice that most of us keep our eyes down. The diversity in age, body-language and clothing is remarkable. I carefully dressed up this morning; Navy pleated trousers, pale rose sleeveless shirt, brown linen jacket; Same nuance of leather for belt and shoes. No suit, no ties, but not the Sunday comfy clothes either. “Smart-casual” as we say.
The meeting is at noon, but our cleaner has come to our house at 9 am, as she does every Monday. Eager to avoid questions about a late departure for work, I have left just after she arrived. I am lucky, the weather is gorgeous. I have parked the car in the town center, and then I have walked for hours, exploring the streets and parks that I have ignored for 20 years. I pass by the building on several occasions. It is almost time, but I feel too self-conscious to wait in front of the door.
Once inside, our identities are checked and, after a few minutes, we are directed towards this famous table. There is a young pregnant woman, I guess between 6 and 8 months. She must prepare the after-birth. A very young man is probably just off school, searching for a future. In front of me is a man in his fifties, well combed white hair, a bit of overweight, clean track pants and polo, glasses. Why is he there? A long-term homeless, a foreigner who barely speaks the language and two middle-aged men, a little frumpy, complete our group.
The facilitator arrives, arms full of notebooks. She starts by 10 min of mandatory administrative declarations, that she probably has to regurgitate before each meeting. Then comes the first series of questions about everyone’s progress, with a collection of respective forms. I am excused since I cannot have made any progress. The meeting ends up on a “training” step, with a round-table exercise on how to prepare for an interview. The answers are varied and very comprehensive (one of us answers “to brush me teeth”).
I am the last one to talk. There is not much to add any more. On arrival, like a good boy, I have naturally chosen the seat near the “teacher”. Or perhaps it is the routine of the first row in international conferences, the one reserved for speakers and silver-backs, who are always entitled to the first question.
I realize too late that there is no hierarchy. The position does not count since we all have the same, the last one. The clothes do not impress anyone, there is no-one to impress. I am 50, and I am jobless.
