“This is the first time we will be apart,” Beaujolais announced sadly to her triplet sisters, who were sitting on the large canopied bed with her in their London townhouse. They were enjoying their nightly ritual of gathering in Margaux’s room. Anjou, Beaujolais, and Margaux were the identical beautiful daughters of the Marquess Ashbury and his French Marchioness.
“It is not forever, dear,” Margaux said soothingly as she brushed her sister’s long ebony locks to a silky sheen. “We will be together again. There will be house parties, and holidays…”
“It was bound to happen sooner or later. I thought we would all be married by now. Yet, here we are, on the shelf!” Beaujolais exclaimed.
“I am happy to be claiming my space on the shelf if it means leaving the Marriage Mart! You must admit I have lost the ability to hold my tongue. It is best I leave before I ruin you all,” Margaux said laughingly.

On the last clear day in August, seven great black cormorants flew in a wedge out over the Atlantic and lit on a rock in a lazy cove on Arrant Island. Now that wasn’t particularly unusual; cormorants were sea birds and sea birds landed on rocks all the time. Except those birds had done the same thing, at the same time of day, for the entire summer. Every morning they lit on that rock and just stood there with their wings spread-eagle, as if they were drying out their laundry. They didn’t move, even when a tasty school of alewives swam by; all they did was stare, for hours, like they were waiting for something to happen.

Am letzten klaren Tag im August flogen sieben große schwarze Kormorane in einem Keil über den Atlantik und ließen sich auf einem Felsen in einer Bucht auf Arrant Island nieder. Das war nicht besonders ungewöhnlich; Kormorane sind Seevögel und Seevögel landeten schon immer auf Felsen. Nur dass diese Vögel immer genau dasselbe machten, zur selben Zeit des Tages, den ganzen Sommer lang. Jeden Morgen landeten sie auf diesem Felsen und standen mit ausgebreiteten Flügeln da, als ob sie die Wäsche trocknen würden. Sie bewegten sich nicht, auch nicht, als ein schmackhafter Schwarm von Maifischen an ihnen vorbei schwamm. Sie starrten einfach für Stunden vor sich hin, als ob sie darauf warteten, dass etwas passierte.
