German term

auf Werbung

German to English Social Sciences History
From a German local history book: "1756 gibt ein Vertreter Friedrich des Großen hier eine Vorstellung. Es verlautet da: Zum Vater dieses Kindes wurde vor der Kirchenzensur auf Befragen von der Mutter angegeben, ein im hiesigen Erbbestands-Wirtshaus...eine Zeitlang auf Werbung gelegener Preußischer Unteroffizier mit Namen Rau."

Does this indicate he had been pursuing (courting) the mother of the child for a while?
Proposed translations (English)

Discussion

Thomas Pfann Jun 26, 2017:
Mit beermat This seems to be it (Werbung = Rekrutierung). See for example: https://goo.gl/52edkb
David Hollywood Jun 26, 2017:
I agree with beermatt .... it looks like seeking recruits
beermatt Jun 26, 2017:
I'm not sure, but I believe it means that he used the inn as a base to seek out new recruits ("Soldaten anWERBEN", WERBUNG von Rekruten)

I could be wrong.
Eleanore Strauss Jun 26, 2017:
That is what it appears to be.
