French to English: Jean Prouvé: the poetics of the technical object
Source text - French
Le dilemme de l’angle
Solution de carrossier ?

The problem of the corner
(...) Mies, always consistent with the modernist poetics of self-referentiality, had magnified the problematics of modern metal architecture just as Mondrian and many others had explored that of the single plane in painting. Prouvé, lowly technologist, humble seditionist, just got rid of it. From the Maison de l’abbé Pierre (1956) to the ambitious Tour Nobel (1967) the rounded corners can certainly be interpreted as an affirmation of the primacy of “technical thought” over the “religion” of the architects. A car maker’s answer to the problem? Perhaps, but remember that the Swiss architect Fritz Haller, seen by many (and justly so) as the “missing link” between Mies and Prouvé, having boldly adapted Mies’ corner solutions for several school and housing projects, will adopt for his most prestigious building, the Technical College at Brügg-Windisch (1962-66) a very elegant curved glass panel using the same joint. (Bruno Reichlin)
Italian to English: Firenze Capitale (1904)

"I cannot proceed to record the extent to which, day by day, the material face of Florence was transformed in the six years between 1865 and 1870; it is no exaggeration to say that every twenty-four hours something old vanished and something new appeared, and the work of demolition and reconstruction carried out by the Commune, the Government and many private citizens went on just as doggedly and with no less enthusiasm in the suburbs as in the centre."(Ugo Pesci, 1904)
