It's used in pharmaceutical preparations, usually to indicate how much of the solvent (water, alcohol, etc) should be used to achieve the needed total volume.
Normally, it's preceded by the solvent's name, such as water, aqua,..
ex. Aqua ad 100 ml (means: sufficient quantity of water up to 100 ml)
