English term

just a block away

English to Arabic Art/Literary Construction / Civil Engineering general conversations
Hello colleagues:

We are just a block away.

What would be the best short translation for this phrase into Arabic?

I checked three English-Arabic dictionaries for the word BLOCK, but the Arabic equivalent seems very long.

Can we say :

على بعد أو مسافة مجمّع سكني واحد فقط

Is there a better standard agreed - on translation?

Please provide some comments or explanation.

Thanks so much in advance.

agree Randa Farhat : على بُعد مربّع سكني / قطعة واحدة / شارع واحد (ويُقصد به الشارع بالعرض الذي يفصل بين قطع المباني) وشارع واحد صار الاستخدام الدارج

لا يفصلنا سوى مبنى واحد

Block:
1) a tall building that contains flats or offices;
2) a building that form part of a school, hospital, etc. which is used for a particular purpose:

Therefore, I would prefer مبنى as it means different types of buildings/blocks

Many thanks Shimaa!
disagree Ahmed Ismail : Block here does not mean one building. Actually, it means number of buildings that are considered a block. This is a common expression which indicates close proximity to something. other meaning: the buildings next to each other between crossing streets

It means a large building divided into separate functional units

فقط على بُعد مربع سكني واحد

Block:
تعني في العادة المربع السكني وليس المبنى فقط
والمربع السكني هو بضعة مباني متلاصقة يحدها شوارع من جوانبها وتستغرق أقل من 3-4 دقائق لتجاوزها سيرا على الاقدام

إن أراد الكاتب أن يقول على بعد مبنى واحد كان الأجدر أن يقول
just next door

Dear Mr. Ahmed, Please refer to any dictionary. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/block (for example) you will find that a block may mean a large building,a large building divided into separate functional units.

Dear Mr. Ahmed, do you have any reference? How did you know that it is the "non-literal" meaning which is used in this sentence?
Peer comment(s):

disagree Ahmed Ismail : Block here means "an area of buildings in a town or city with streets on all sides" This is a common expression used in US and you don't have to use the literal meaning of the word. We translate from another culture and it is used like this in US.

How are you that sure? The word block may have two meanings. where is your reference?
