In this program we aim to spread our culture by means of all its manifestations.
We want to know what we were in order to be proud of what we are. We are in search of Mexico.
Friends, we are in Parque Museo de la Venta en Villahermosa, capital of the state of Tabasco. And we have come to show one of the root cultures of our history and of our culture. Roots that go back 3,000.
2. The Omecaa men and women who took the fundamental step that brought them from their solitary villages to the heights of the unequaled Mesoamerican civilization. The Olmecas, people of great deeds, people who built great stone cities where there are only swamps and jungles. They raised physical work to the status of art and religion. To transport 30 to 50 ton stones is more than a great physical deed, it is the triumph of social organization and the manifestation of power.
3. But who were these men and women? What language did they speak? How did they call themselves? What was their religion? In truth, we know almost nothing about them. We hardly know the name that the Mesticas used for their descendants. They called Olmecas the inhabitants of the region of Veracruz and parts of the state of Tabasco. They called them Olmecas because this means rubber (oilcloth?). Thus the Olmecas are known as dwellers of the rubber country. We come to the Parque Arqueologico de la Venta Park in Villa Hermosa, Tabasco in order to learn about the mysteries of their culture and to admire the splendor of the Olmecas. Blanca Sanchez and Hector Gomez are in search of Mexico.
4. It is estimated that the first Americans existed 50,000 years ago. We have facts on the last 3,000.
For thousand of years man lived almost as a parasite. As long as he did not change his surroundings, he suffered the harshness of the climate. Like animals, his daily strife was struggle for existence against huge animals. But something distinguished man from the rest of the animal, in spite of his surroundings, he was the supreme creation of nature.
Little by little man bent the course of his existence. Not only does he live by adapting but also by changing his conditions. It is not enough to ponder on the phenomena of nature. It is necessary to change those phenomena.
5. At a given point in time and on a determined area, 3,000 years ago the village people began a new course.
These people began a course that took them to civilization. The place was south of Veracruz and north of Tabasco. There the Olmeca civilization was born and with it the Mesoamerican civilization.
6. The second millennium before the birth of Christ was occurring when the splendid history of the Jaguar people, the Olmeca civilization took place. The early Mesoamerican civilizations followed. This civilization, the characteristic civilization of all times because of its colossal heads. The tropical coast was not the only place were this civilization flourished. Other places were Oaxaca, the central plateau, etc. Even though the cultural peak was later on. This zone comprises to the north the Golf of Mexico, the first elevations of the southern mountain range, the Papaluapan river to the west and the Brasillo Tonala basin to the east. This is the metropolitan Olmeca zone even though the Olmeca influence extended beyond this zone. Therefore it is a coastal culture having an abundance of water. This is a situation opposite to that of the Egyptians in which there was a struggle against dry ground. The Olmecas struggled with the rain, swamps and torrential rains. This zone that we have just mentioned is a type of American Mesopotamia, the place of Metropolitan Olmeca. But it extended much more beyond. Indeed, we find Omeca influences in Yucatan, Monte Alban, Oaxaca, Guerrero and Morelos; even in the Valley of Puebla, the plateau of the Mexico Valley with different geographic and climatic conditions.
7. Which shows us that the geographical conditions were relatively important. Yes behind everything lies the will of man. The challenge for the Olmecas was the jungle. Whoever overcame the jungle would build a culture. They managed to conquer the jungle. They conquered the jungle with its wild monkey, the jaguar, the tapir, the wild boar, but also with abundant food: deer, wild turkeys, iguanas, armadillos, quail; and many other birds. Probably they bred the honey bee for its honey.
8. How did they look physically? What did they eat? How was their life?
We know about the social and political life of the Mayas but much is unknown in the case of the Olmecas. There are many questions, and little is known in spite of the effort of researchers.
Which were their languages and gods?
The answers are temporary until new research and excavations take place.
9. It is known that before 1000 years, agriculture was the economic basis for Mesoamerica. One can deduce that the staples were the trilogy: corn, beans, and pumpkin. Our old foods: cocoa, cotton, tobacco, chili since these are ancient plants. In farming, fields were used but without the use of irrigation and fertilizers.
What type of people were they? Neither I nor anyone knows. Their physical appearance has been deducted from their stones and reliefs.
10. The human form is small in stature and hefty. Yes, but in some figurative reliefs it was taller and more slender with pointed nose, and less bulky lips often with a goatee.
These were more predominant among the inhabitants of the coast.
Because of the make up of the ground, humid and swampy, Olmeca tombs have not been found. Neither has a single skeleton showing the physical characteristics been found but one can deduct from the current inhabitants of this region, if we accept them as being their descendent and who have retained the racial characteristics: the classical southern Mexican man, that is to say short in height but with a well formed body, a proneness to obesity, with round heads and faces. Having bulky napes, oblique and swollen eyes, with creases around the eyes, short and wide nose, a mouth having thick lips and sunken corners of the mouth; and powerful jawbones and short necks.
How many were there? From 250,00- to 350,000. And how did they transport the stones? It was very complicated to move these monuments. They did not use the wheel because they had no beast of burden.
11. In order to understand culture one has to show some specific points. It is not necessary to see all the archeological monuments. In this park we see figures that represent the Olmeca culture in a fine way.
This figure, The King: the pillar of stone represents a busy person having a headdress as tall as himself. He appears standing and bears a scepter or weapon held with both hands. On his side are two warriors in hostile stance, because of this reason it has been called “Los guardianes,” The Guardians.
It consists of a monolith that has more height and weighs 20 tons.
What is important is the previous history.
12. The principal cities were closed to each other: 16,00 to 18,000 square kilometers.
Between two small zones between the Pasajualco and Chiquito Rivers three spots are related places are found: San Lorenzo, Potrero Nuevo and Tenosclita, the present day name should not be confused with that of the capital of the Mexican Empire.
San Lorenzo is the oldest place and corresponds to Egypt. Yes to 1200 BC.
13. The contribution of San Lorenzo is sculpture. A figure of a Jaguar man is on exhibit at the Sala del Golfo of the Museo de Antropologia in Mexico City.
It is not a monumental work but it has the combination and strong style of the works of large size.
It is true, its physique of Jaguar man, the emphatic appearance of its massiveness is not determined by its dimensions but by the working of the stone. We see massiveness in a smaller scale. And in what is this based on?
The jaguar is related to rain waters. This sculpture was used for the drainage’s. In San Lorenzo the artificial lakes are joined underground by stones shaped in U form. If we place another U shaped here we form an oval shape, a tube pipe or canal for the flow of water. This stone was in the front end of a canal. Exactly, the eye or tributary of an important spring.
14. In San Lorenzo, seven massive heads are also found. There is one in the Museo Nacional de Antropologia, a beautiful piece found 100 kilometers from the Cintetec hill. It measures 1.86 meters in height and weighs 11.5 tons. It is considered heavy due to the heaviness of its form, a closed block, a solid massive mass.
Seen from the front it appears carved out of a prismatic rectangular block with the corners having been rounded.
The chin is protruding but it is emphatic in its size.
One of the characteristics is the face with many masses and deep recesses, not a flat face.
Also it has an interesting decoration in the helmet. The helmet has lined rings, two claws each claw has three toes and nails. There are also emblems, markings that appear to be rank or hierarchies.
Objects hanging from its ears and earring from which hanging down is a hook-like appendage.
The essential Olmeca art. This heads shows energy, firmness, authority and power.
Is it true to the Olmeca life or is it idealism?
The naturalness comes from the strength of its contrasts and shades and its massive proportions. The proportions are similar to those of the Egyptians and Greeks.
15. Another head in the yard of Museo de la Cruz is larger, 2.7 meters high, weighing 20 tons. It is deteriorated and has many holes. In spite of the holes we see that its eyes have a distant gaze, and one of a person blind to the exterior world.
Each head has its own personality even though the massiveness makes them seem similar.
16. In the Parque de la Venta park in Villahermosa, Tabasco there is a collection of works brought from La Venta which later (inaudible) San Lorenzo.
La Venta has a difficult access. It is an island surrounded by swamps. Carlos Pellicer obtained authorization to bring down the transportable works. For years he transported rocks, stone structures, colossal heads, pillars of stone, and other pieces.
La Venta has stones that were transported through the jungle for over 130 kilometers. Laid out from north to south there are various articles:
north: monumental heads, in the square zone is a hedge of stones.
south: mosaic floor found by Matthew Sterlin 7 meters deep. Above the floor were found tiles made of serpentine, laid out as a cross.
The tiles show the face of a jaguar having ornaments on its head.
The reinstallation here shows identical tiles: 498 tiles carved from serpentine, a hard bluish rock.
This has a magical and religious meanings.
17. The altar is the most beautiful work of art. It has a person wearing a headdress and jewels and nude torso, in a deep recess in the wall, holding a rope and knife. He ties two people with a rope: on one side a different racial type and on the other a typical Olmeca profile. On the upper part of the altar there is the image of a jaguar.
18. There are also Olmeca jade figurines. The Olmecas were originators of the jade industry of the Mesoamerican tradition.
Serpentine is like quartz, bluish green, semiprecious.
19. Let’s go to see the greatest Olmeca head perhaps ever found by the North American archeology, Matthew Sterling in 1939. It is carved out of basalt found in the Cintetiz Hill. Broken by erosion it measures 2.16 meters in height and has a circumference of 6.5 meters. It weighs 24 tons.
Just like the San Lorenzo, heads. some heads appear rooted to the earth and others hide their weight with more agile forms. This stone shows a head that appears heavy. The jaw touches the floor and the is wide and shows a lack of symmetry, on one side the cranium is wider than the other at the level of the eyes. The nose is too flat when seen from a profile resulting in that the nose is lower than the jaw. We see that even though they were great artist, the sculptors of La Venta did not care for proportions as those of San Lorezo.
Those of San Lorenzo followed the golden rule just as the Greeks and the Renaissance, a harmonic sculpture.
20. In each civilization there was a regard for certain proportion, but each artistic measure had its own ideal of beauty.
The Olmeca head expresses much. The Olmecas had ceremonial centers. The massive sculptures are worldwide concepts such as the heads of Easter Island.
All the heads of Easter Island are identical but those of the Olmecas are not. They are different. Idealized pictures of chiefs, priests, important persons. A picture that means that homage to the social hierarchy of the person.
21. Never forget what the gods placed in the mouth of my father and teacher. There are only two ways in which to give form and life to stone and clay: chiseling with pain what is unnecessary to the stone. We tear out what is unnecessary. It is a hard testing.
The second way in which to give life with our hands to sculpture is by adding to the clay. We give life softly adding a bit at a time. Which is the form that is most worthy? All form of life is worthy. Stone is like the jaguar and we are servants of the stone and of the jaguar.
22. The Olmeca sculpture laid the foundation for all Mesoamerica 3000 years ago and ended 2500 years later in the hands of the Aztec, later the Mayas and of other many, many peoples. The Olmecas could not have risen out of nothing. This royal tomb is awesome. It presents an example of funeral art. It was discovered by the aforementioned North American investigator, and reconstructed here. Here were found many jade statues that today are located in the Sala del Golfo of the Museo Nacional de Antropologia.
23. In this window we see axes and figures pertaining to Mound A-2 of La Venta. The ax bears a person who has five ears of corn. Around we see various figurines. In this window we also see an offering of La Venta: 16 jade and serpentine figurines made with an unparalleled mastery, characteristics of royalty. The scene is that of a ritual, there are mushrooms, and a ceremonial scene with altars. The figures are probably of priests.
In the same room we see the relief of a priest with the jaguar helmet and surrounds by a rattle snake. It is a symmetrical study, not a natural one. The position of the human figure is made in a way that the relief appears as part of the stone block.
The fighter is very different. It is a sculpture of a bust. Its realism, movement and proportions are marvelous. Discovered by Antonio Plaza at the borders of the (inaudible) River in Veracruz. It has a strange attitude with its arms raised at the height of the torso. The reality of the characteristics is noteworthy. It shows the softness of the muscles of its back. The head is damaged but the anatomical characteristics are related in a very harmonious manner in relations to the whole of the body. What great sculpturers were the Olmecas!.
24. This is a monument to maternity because of the quintuplets. We have seen much. The style of the Olmecas is varied: from massive to delicate and soft.
Remember that the military orders of the eagles and the tigers came out of here, moved around all the American region and continued up to Spanish times.
25. (Blue Mural)
One of these artistic expressions (military orders of tigers and eagles) were found in Cacaxla in the state of Tascala.
26. Some years ago archeologist called this the Olmeca, culture of La Venta because here its inhabitants produced fantastic art. Park of Museo de Venta, Villahermosa, Tabasco.
Little is know about the Olmecas, but more is known than what we have shown with our cameras.
27. We have seen how the Olmecas were a happy union of thousands of years, for 2,500 years the guides of Mesoamerican cultures. This was a civilization that continued producing. They invented the calendar and the so named “long account.” This enabled the setting of exact dates with which to count days starting from a date in the past, a mystic date. That is why the Olmecas culture is considered the mother culture of Mesoamerica. Because of this we have come to the state of Tabasco. In order to know it.
Blanca Sanchez, Hector Gomez are grateful to you for accompanying us in search of Mexico.
Thank you very much.
