Sector 1: Edku – El Alamein Section 1: Edku – Alexandria This section is located on the Mediterranean coast of the Nile Delta, an eco-region denominated “Deltaic Mediterranean Coast”. The area is included in the coastal belt arid province, characterized by a mild winter and a hot summer. It is under the maritime influence of the Mediterranean Sea, with rainfall of more than 100 mm/year and an attenuated dry period. It comprises a zone of arid land between the Mediterranean Sea to the northwest, intensive coastal development, farmlands and Lake Edku. The Abu Qir area in the eastern part of this sector is less interesting in biodiversity due to the numerous human disturbing and polluting activities that have highly affected the coastal zone. The area also represents a unique meeting point for biological elements from three biogeographical regions: the Mediterranean (extending along the coastal zone), the Saharo-Sindian (relicts isolated in the sand dunes) and the Afro-tropical (extending northwards along the Nile Valley). The most significant habitats in the area are Saharan, represented by isolated relict populations of species cut off from their main range thousands of years ago. 1.1.1 Habitats The area of Alexandria is not of particular interest in terms of biodiversity. The Abu Qir area, in the western part of this sector, is highly disturbed and polluted (Sarwat, 2005), while the rest is fairly disturbed. Fragments of natural habitats still remain along the coast and between the patches of reclaimed land, particularly in the Edku area. The habitats of this landscape are likely to have considerable significance for biodiversity as they represent long isolated relicts of Saharan origin, with several locally divergent elements. The main habitats of this sector, within a buffer of 2km on each side of the road, can be classified as follows: - Beach; - Sabkha; - Salt marsh; - Sand dunes; - Cultivations; and - Towns and villages. A survey of the main terrestrial habitats was conducted by Entec during July 1998, with a dedicated survey of the beach area being conducted by ER Egypt in August 2000 (ERM, 2001). A survey of the Abu Qir area was conducted by Sarwat (2005). 1.1.2 Fauna Amphibians One species of amphibian, namely the Nile Delta Toad (Bufo kassasii) is endemic to the lower Nile Valley and Delta. The species is widespread in the area and has been found at Lake Edku, Rosetta, and numerous rice fields, drains and irrigation canals, and other areas with standing freshwater.
