Russian to English: The world's oldest mammal General field: Science Detailed field: Science (general)
Translation - English The analysis of fossil teeth has helped scientists identify the most ancient mammal. The shrew-like creature lived about 225 million years ago, 20 million years earlier than the mammal thought to be the earliest, according to CNN.
The species identified by the teeth was named Brasilodon quadrangularis. The creature that lived on Earth 225 million years ago was about 20 cm long and generally resembled a shrew. Scientists note that the discovery of such an ancient mammal that lived simultaneously with some of the oldest dinosaurs can tell a lot about the origin of modern mammals, which include humans.
Brasilodon quadrangularis was previously thought to be an "advanced reptile" fossil, but a new analysis of the creature's teeth has revealed that it is, after all, a mammal. An important scientific discovery was made by British and Brazilian scientists representing King's College London, the Natural History Museum in London, and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre.
