I'm being rather curious about the poster of this question today, as to how he got to this idea. Maybe Valentine's day approaching? | | | Julian Holmes Japan Local time: 21:37 Member (2011) Japanese to English
But chance encounters are always lurking around the corner. At least, I'd like to think. BTW, did you know that it's customary for women to give guys chocolate on St. Valentine's Day here in Japan? So, I can look forward to champagne and flowers in my Inbox tomorrow morning.

I once saw on the Translator's Feature a very interesting guy, an Englishman who lived in China. I wrote to him to tell him he seemed to me very charming, but he never wrote back. On the other hand I have been approached by a couple or three guys with the same intentions. Sure Valentine's Day approaching, Chie. Cheers to all! N.

The ones I'd ask all live on the wrong side of the Globe | Feb 13, 2017 |
Well maybe not, there is one in Brussels, I think. Don't want my dreams spoilt. I still have ideas about this six-foot West Highlander I wanted to marry. (It's the accent I fall for, looks are a bonus...) Don't ask how I ended up with a Dane who is a good excuse for not wearing high-heeled shoes - I'd be taller than him. Reality is one thing, dreams are another! And I know which side my bread is buttered. | | | EvaVer (X) Local time: 14:37 Czech to French + ... As Christine says, | Feb 13, 2017 |
it seems difficult in most cases. And if you really mean date in the narrow sense of the word, with some nicknames and pictures, you cannot really tell the person's gender (although you can make an educated guess based on the way they communicate). There has been one or two I would just like to meet (not for a date), but I didn't do anything about it. | | | Michael Harris Germany Local time: 14:37 Member (2006) German to English
Come on Chris, how did you manage to get that one through, and where is "Other"?
I have never been asked and have never asked. But...why not? Probably Chris is in the situation and needs to be encouraged by us. Come on Chris! Go for it!
|
|
But some pictures are more interesting than others. I fail to see what the point of "other" would be. "fell like it but dared not"? Who cares? At least this poll goes to show that the staff here have a Valentine Day sense of humour.
I think the last time I asked someone on a date was in 1989... For me, ProZ is about light relief, not a source of work (I don't get out of bed for ProZ outsourcer rates, darling), and pretty much everything that can be said about translation has already been said. So in many ways it's just about chatting, venting, sharing a joke and, best of all, people watching. I find it fascinating. It's not like Facebook where you get to see and learn everything about ... It's not like Facebook where you get to see and learn everything about some people and their lives, which can get a bit tedious. Here you only get a few tantalising glimpses. A single tiny photo. The occasional personal revelation. The odd crack in that pervasive mask of competitive professionalism. But it's still enough to feel quite strongly about some people. Some I feel drawn to, personally or professionally, maybe even sexually. Some are funny, some are good-looking, some are just nice. Others I really can't stand. Some are unbelievably boring, some are insufferably pompous, some are tiresomely combative. It's just like the real world, only you can turn it off. And, of course, you can be who you want to be. We're all wordsmiths, so we can easily create whole new digital personae should we feel so inclined. Hard to sustain, I suspect, but fun to experiment with (I'm very different in real life). Not entirely sure where I'm going here, but I would love the ProZ community in general to be a little bolder, to reveal a little more, to be a bit outrageous or provocative. Safe, boring answers don't do it for me. But if ever I have a need for translation into various obscure language pairs, I do now know who to call. And if ever I suddenly find myself single and lonely, I might conceivably approach a certain chain-smoking accident-prone individual of this parish... ▲ Collapse | | | Ricki Farn Germany Local time: 14:37 English to German
... I know exactly which person here I would ask on a date. (And me being me, this has nothing to do with romance, but there's someone who is both a translator and has another occupation that I would love to spend the rest of my life on. But I would have to sit on a plane for many hours!) 8) | | | Jo Macdonald Spain Local time: 14:37 Italian to English + ... Well done Chris | Feb 13, 2017 |
I'm all for people letting their hair down a bit on here and having more fun. I did send a message to a colleague once saying "kudoz for the profile pic", looked sort of punky tomb raider stylee. She answered kindly saying it was a pic of a game heroine or something, but thanks anyway and it's always nice to receive fan mail. I wrote a comic short a while ago called "I got the hots 4 y... I wrote a comic short a while ago called "I got the hots 4 your icon" about pretty much the same thing. It's on my personal page (last one) if anyone wants to read it. It's not about Proz, but interacting with people online in general. ▲ Collapse

There are certainly some gentlemen here whose posts I hugely enjoy and with whom I feel "in sync". I'd like to meet them but I'd never dream of asking them on a "date". As in "real life", they're probably already attached - or gay. C'est la vie (exit, sighing). | | | Do powwows count as dates? | Feb 13, 2017 |
I know powwows can be anything from brilliant to total flops, but the ones I have been to have all been worthwhile. They more or less fit Chris's requirements, and although you can't just turn them off like a laptop, you can leave if you get really desperate. Antisocial as I am, I can usually pretend to be a nice person for the duration when I know we all have to go home sometime! Dates one-to-one are much more difficult. I only really like most other people at a safe distance!
