Dutch term

Snuffelstage

Dutch to English Other Education / Pedagogy
Hi!

I'm translating a handbook about placements aimed at international students. I came across the following term and I don't know what to do with it...

Snuffelstage: the aim of this type of placement is to get acquainted with the branche of work in question, not necessarily to acquire competences. It's to give the person on placement an idea of what it's like to work (full-time, with colleagues, etc.) It's usually aimed at secondary school pupils who might, through a snuffelstage, get a better idea of what they would like to study next.

I can't add this entire description to the text. The only description the source text gives is: 'de student kijkt in de organisatie mee', which, I think, doesn't explain enough to leave the term untranslated.

Any ideas? :)

Discussion

Tiux Aug 1, 2011:
I am not too sure about orientational placement. I have a feeling that this is more related to chemical industry than education. Furthermore, I was not able to find any reference to it and would therefore personally not use it. However, it could be some new term that I have not come across yet :)
Alexander Schleber (X) Aug 1, 2011:
Maybe But then it should be "orientation placement" or "evaluation placement"

Orientational placement Four replies already! Thanks so much, you're so helpful!
What about orientational placement? Just found that one tucked away somewhere in my TM...

work experience

In the UK this kind of internship would be called work experience (or sometimes work experience internship).
Example sentence:

Work experience is a great way to gain some real life work experience while you study and make yourself more employable.

work experience (placement)

Depending on the exact context, you could leave out "placement".

Or work experience internship.

work orientation

work orientation (placement/programme) is ook een optie. En work shadowing programme zie je ook, maar dat is denk ik meer een meeloopstage.
Peer comment(s):

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : I think 'work shadowing' is a good option and does fit into the context.

the 'get the hang of it' period /the 'what's it all about time'

Just a thought

look-around internship

Van Dale N-E gives "look-(a)round" as the standard translation for "snuffelstage", but this is of course clearer and there are some hits for it in Google.
