Definition / notes:	When a company is publicly traded, a distinction is made between the total number of shares outstanding and the amount of shares in circulation, referred to as a float. The float consists of the company's shares held by the general public. /EY/ The total number of shares publicly owned and available for trading. The float is calculated by subtracting restricted shares from outstanding shares. For example, a company may have 10 million outstanding shares, but only seven million are trading on the stock market. Therefore, this company's float would be seven million.
