Why did I choose this expression? I think the idea is of good times yielding, backing off, allowing more mature experiences to creep in. The expression giving ground seems to connect to the idea of sand in the hourglass and also mirrors the positive image of the indulgent father. Finally, the alliteration of the G may help to underline an image that the author obviously gave some thought to.
