Istnieją dwie wersje mechanizmów i drukarek pracujących w tej technologii: z głowicą nieruchomą - "tzw. liniową" - opisaną poniżej oraz z głowicą ruchomą. Praktycznie rzecz biorąc z uwagi na gorszą jakość druku, mniejszą prędkość oraz większą awaryjność, drukarki z ruchomą głowicą są spotykane coraz rzadziej na rynku.
