Savējos (sapratīs) meklējot
Sarunā par Larsa fon Trīra filmu Eiropa un tās varoņu patriotismu, kas ir spēcīgākas jūtas par mīlestību, režisore Baņuta Rubesa veica kopsavilkumu vārdiem: Eiropa – tas vienmēr nozīmēs izvēli jeb Eiropa=izvēle. Formulu, arī vārdisku, spēks ir to jēdzieniskā ietilpībā, labskanībā un lakonismā. Iespējā attiecināt. Eiropa=kultūra=māksla=teātris=izvēle.
Izvēle nogurdina. Tā ir neizbēgama. Latviešu teātris un latviešu teātra režija ir nemitīga izvēle. Pat Alvis Hermanis, pirms pāris gadiem saņemot prestižo Zalcburgas festivāla balvu par izrādi Revidents, atbildes runā izvēlējās runāt kā par krievu, tā vācu teātra skolu, uz kurām balstās latviešu (arī viņa) teātris. Nu Hermanis kļuvis pats, vairs neatsaucas, strādā. Top Latviešu stāsti, kur vēl vērtīgāka par atrasto ir izvēle, ideja meklēt un atrast to, kas tad ir latvieši. Vai šie stāsti ir teātris? Ja publika nāk un klausās, tātad ir. Šosezon un citkārt uzvar tie, kas nav tramīgi un nenobīstas soli pirms fināla, kas padarītajā ir godīgi līdz galam, ir paši. Uzvar Māra Ķimele, kas grib, ņem un atgādina, ka psiholoģiskais teātris dzīvs nav frāze, bet formula. Un top Mēnesis uz laukiem. Par mīlestību. Uzvar Džilindžers, kas atgādina, ka teātris ir spēle un, visticamāk, arī dzīve. Un Penelope un Diks kļūst par plandošu karogu viņa formulai. Uzvar Gaļina Poliščuka, kam teātris un dzīve ir cīņa. Un Pūt, vējiņi! poēzija top norauta kā Baibiņas lakatiņš, un visiem sāp. Pa īstam. Uzvar Oļģerts Kroders un Heda Gablere, pasacīdams, ka mākslai ir viņas pašas un nevis dzīves formas (un formulas). Patiesībā uzvar arī Felikss Deičs ar Blaumaņa Aizbirušo avotu un Mārtiņš Eihe ar Priedes Zilo. Viens spītīgi un neatlaidīgi latviešiem stāstīdams par viņu zaudēto paradīzi, otrs nenobīdamies no laikmeta, kam šodienas teātris vēl vairās pieskarties, tik jēls ir viss, no kā kauns un kas netīkams.
Tomēr latviešu teātris 2004./2005.gada sezonā nav tikai uzvarētāji. Tie ir visu Latvijas teātru aktieri, režisori, mākslinieki un tehniskie darbinieki, kuru izvēle ir dzīve savā profesijā, kuriem patīk būt kopā, fantazēt, meklēt, radīt, eksperimentēt, atkārtot, uzrunāt, pakļaut sevi pārbaudījumiem, sajust sevi kā daļu no veseluma, dzirdēt klusumu, kad zāle iet līdzi, un aplausus, kad to stiprums un ilgums ansambļa ausij ir smalki gradēts. Par to visu top maksāts – ar talantu un iedvesmu, ar veiksmēm un neveiksmēm, ar materiālu nenodrošinātību pārpilno veikalu ielenkumā, ar atkarību – no kultūras ministrijas naudas, publikas intereses, kritiķu vērtējuma, no tā, ka tirgus sabiedrība pieprasa veiksmi un garantijas arī mākslā, piešķir veiksminiekiem varoņa oreolu un uzņemas soģa lomu. Cena par darbu teātrī ir augsta. Bet arī tā ir izvēle.
Un vēlreiz par Eiropas likteni allaž izvēlēties. Par to nerunā tikai Trīrs, protams. Un tomēr, pārdomājot Spēlmaņu nakts bukletam rakstāmos ievadvārdus, es atcerējos, kur un kad es par to vēl nesen dzirdēju runājam Latvijas teātrī. Tūlīt, tūlīt klusi būs pagājis 2005.gads, kas reizē bija arī 1905.gada notikumu simtgade. Paula Putniņa lugas “Aicinājums uz... pērienu” izrādē, ko Nacionālā teātrī iestudēja Edmunds Freibergs, tika runāts par to pašu. Latvija=izvēle.

Seeking (Understanding) Our Own
The director, Baņuta Rubess, neatly summed up a recent dialogue about Lars von Trier’s film, Europa, and the patriotism of its protagonists—patriotism being a more mighty emotion than love—saying: Europe always means having to choose, or, more succinctly, Europe=choices. The power of any formula, numerical or otherwise, is its all-encompassing deftness of conception, resonance, and brevity. Its ability to ascribe. Europe=culture=art=theatre=choices.
To choose or not to choose: a weighty, unavoidable eventuality. And deciding whether to choose Latvian theatre and Latvian theatrical directing is the never-ending question. A few years ago, upon receiving the prestigious Salzburg Festival award for his production of Revidents (The Auditor), even Alvis Hermanis chose to refer to the influence of the Russian and German school on theatre in Latvia, including his. These days, however, Hermanis is holding his own—secluded, working hard. His most recent production, Latviešu stāsti (Latvian Stories), celebrates choice over discovery and revels in the desire to seek and find that which is intrinsic to being Latvian. Can such stories typify theatre? If you stage them, they will come. The laurel wreath is not for the faint of heart; it graces the fearless, the virtuous sui generis. Triumphant is Māra Ķimele, who incites us to remember that psychological theatre is not a mere phrase, rather, a highly-developed formula. And along comes Mēnesis uz laukiem (A Month in the Country). All about love. Victory, too, belongs to Džilindžers, who reminds us that theatre is a serious gambol called life. And Penelope un Diks (Penelope and Dick) becomes a buoyant banner heralding his singular formula. Victorious is Gaļina Poliščuka, for whom theatre, even life itself, means struggle. And the elegiac imagery of Pūt, vējiņu! (Blow, Wind!) is as Baibiņas kerchief—rent asunder—and we all grieve. Deeply felt grief. Yet Oļģerts Kroders and his Heda Gablere (Hedda Gabler), declaring that art has its own life force, not that of some life form (and formula), also strides triumphant. In truth, so do Felikss Deičs with Blaumanis’ Aizbirušo avotu (Buried Stream) and Mārtiņš Eihe with Priedes’ Zilā (Blue). The one, resolutely telling Latvians of their paradise lost; the other, undaunted by the era of shame—that era—that still haunts current theatre, its raw wounds blistering and accusing.
But the 2004/2005 season is not dominated by victors, alone. The podium is shared by every Latvian actor, director, artistic and technical staff member who has chosen a life in the theatre, to be a part of a bold collective of professionals who thrive on collegiality and shared fantasies, always seeking, proclaiming, experimenting, revisiting, addressing, welcoming challenges—each an integral part of the whole—revelling in the silence of the playhouse as it responds to every rise and fall, until the final moment of acclaim, when the length and breadth of applause is carefully appraised by every member of the company. But all this comes at a cost—the price is paid in talent and conviction, in success and failure, in being surrounded by unaffordable materials, in dependency—being dependent on funding from the Ministry of Culture, public interests, critics’ reviews, and on the demands of an entrepreneurial society that expects returns for its investments, even from art, bestowing on the fortuitous their crown while wearing the mantle of censurer. The cost of crafting theatre is high. But that, too, is a choice.
Still, we can choose to address the fate of Europe. Certainly, Von Trier is not the only one doing so. And yet, reflecting on this introductory prologue, I am reminded of how recently I was engaged by a dialogue of this in our theatre halls. Quickly, quietly we’ve come to the end of 2005, the centenary marking the events of 1905. In his play, „Aicinājums uz…pērienu” (“Invitation To…A Flogging”), mounted at the National Theatre by Edmunds Freibergs, Pauls Putniņš speaks directly to this. Latvia=choices.
