English term

flashed

English to French Other Mechanics / Mech Engineering
The new Engine Electronic Control Unit (EECU) must be flashed (programmed) prior to replacement.
If after replacing suspect components and inspecting related wiring the same DTC returns, suspect a faulty EECU.

Discussion

Tony M Apr 11, 2014:
@ Alain In fact, the term 'flash' comes from that period, where EEPROMs were erased and then programmed using a strong UV light through their 'window'; in modern usage, 'flash' has come to mean the loading of the prgoram into the chip, without any necessary reference to the now largely obsolete UV erasure process. It's not really anything to do with 'Flash' memory itself — or at least, that's not why the term was originally coined.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : No 'updating' here — it's programming a new chip for the 1st time; it's hardly 'laid' — it is the 'official' jargon in the business, refers to the method of the process, rather than the result. 'flashage' etc. common jargon in some fields.

«"Flashing" the chip involves electronically erasing the read only program and replacing it with new, updated information (the engine control 'map'). Typically, when an ECU is flashed, a new map is provided that allows the engine to run 'hotter,' providing more Horsepower, altered valve timing, etc.»
...
«An ECU flash is a reprogramming of your engine control unit to allow your car run properly with the mods that you have installed»

That is, "programmé", of course.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : As it's a NEW chip, it wouldn't be RE-programming — simply initial programming of a blank chip. / 'flashing' is perfect in EN; it's just that the ref. you quote is incomplete, it refers only to one very specific instance.

True. So just "programmed", as per the parenthesis. "Flashed" may be not totally appropriate in English, then. Translation improves the source, or has to do so, sometimes.

Des suggestions suite à ma dernière tentative.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : You can't fly in the face of a whole industry; these are NOT the standard technical terms used in this field.

Flash memory is an electronic non-volatile computer storage medium that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed.

Flashing (or flashing firmware[4]) refers to the overwriting of existing firmware or data on ROM modules present in an electronic device with new data.
