Like fundamentalist Judaism and medieval Christianity, Islam is totalist. That is to say, it makes a total claim on the individual. Indeed, there is no individual; there is only the umma - the community of believers. Ayatollah Khomeini, in his copious writings, often returns to this theme. He unindulgently notes that believers in most religions appear to think that, so long as they observe all the formal pieties, then for the rest of the time they can do more or less as they please. ‘Islam’, as he frequently reminds us, ‘isn't like that.’ Islam follows you everywhere, into the kitchen, into the bedroom, into the bathroom, and beyond death into eternity. Islam means ‘submission’ - the surrender of independence of mind. That surrender now bears the weight of well over 60 generations, and 14 centuries.
The stout self-sufficiency or, if you prefer, the extreme incuriosity of Islamic culture has been much remarked. Present-day Spain translates as many books into Spanish, annually, as the Arab world has translated into Arabic in the past 1,100 years. And the late-medieval Islamic powers barely noticed the existence of the West until it started losing battles to it. The tradition of intellectual autarky was so robust that Islam remained indifferent even to readily available and obviously useful innovations, including, incredibly, the wheel. The wheel, as we know, makes things easier to roll; Bernard Lewis, in What Went Wrong?, sagely notes that it also makes things easier to steal.
By the beginning of the 20th century the entire Muslim world, with partial exceptions, had been subjugated by the European empires. And at that point the doors of perception were opened to foreign influence: that of Germany. This allegiance cost Islam its last imperium, the Ottoman, for decades a ‘helpless hulk’ (Hobsbawm), which was duly dismantled and shared out after the First World War - a war that was made in Berlin. Undeterred, Islam continued to look to Germany for sponsorship and inspiration. When the Nazi experiment ended, in 1945, sympathy for its ideals lingered on for years, but Islam was now forced to look elsewhere. It had no choice; geopolitically, there was nowhere else to turn. And the flame passed from Germany to the USSR.
So Islam, in the end, proved responsive to European influence: the influence of Hitler and Stalin. And one hardly needs to labour the similarities between Islamism and the totalitarian cults of the last century. Anti-semitic, anti-liberal, anti-individualist, anti-democratic, and, most crucially, anti-rational, they too were cults of death, death-driven and death-fuelled. The main distinction is that the paradise which the Nazis (pagan) and the Bolsheviks (atheist) sought to bring about was an earthly one, raised from the mulch of millions of corpses. For them, death was creative, right enough, but death was still death. For the Islamists, death is a consummation and a sacrament; death is a beginning.
Over the past five years, what we have been witnessing, apart from a moral slump or bust, is a death agony: the death agony of imperial Islam. Islamism is the last wave - the last convulsion. Until 2003, one could take some comfort from the very virulence of the Islamist deformation. Nothing so insanely dionysian, so impossibly poisonous, could expect to hold itself together over time. In the 20th century, outside Africa, the only comparable eruptions of death-hunger, of death-oestrus, were confined to Nazi Germany and Stalinite Kampuchea, the one lasting 12 years, the other three and a half. Hitler, Pol Pot, Osama: such men only ask to be the last to die. But there are some sound reasons for thinking that the confrontation with Islamism will be testingly prolonged.
The Iraq project was foredoomed by three intrinsic historical realities. First, the Middle East is clearly unable, for now, to sustain democratic rule - for the simple reason that its peoples will vote against it. Did no one whisper the words, in the Situation Room - did no one say what the scholars have been saying for years? The ‘electoral policy’ of the fundamentalists, writes Lewis, ‘has been classically summarised as “One man (men only), one vote, once.”’ Or, in Sam Harris's trope, democracy will be ‘little more than a gangplank to theocracy’; and that theocracy will be Islamist. Now the polls have closed, and the results are coming in, region-wide. In Lebanon, gains for Hizbollah; in Egypt, gains for Sayyid Qutb's fraternity, the Muslim Brothers; in Palestine, victory for Hamas; in Iran, victory for the soapbox rabble-rouser and primitive anti-semite, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. In the Iraqi election, Bush and Blair, pathetically, both ‘hoped’ for Allawi, whose return was 14 per cent.
Second, Iraq is not a real country. It was cobbled together, by Winston Churchill, in the early Twenties; it consists of three separate (Ottoman) provinces, Sunni, Shia, Kurd - a disposition which looks set to resume. Among the words not listened to by the US Administration, we can include those of Saddam Hussein. Even with an apparatus of terror as savage as any in history, even with chemical weapons, helicopter gunships, and mass killings, even with a proven readiness to cleanse, to displace, and to destroy whole ecosystems, Hussein modestly conceded that he found Iraq a difficult country to keep in one piece. As a Sunni military man put it, Iraqis hate Iraq - or ‘Iraq’, a concept that has brought them nothing but suffering. There is no nationalist instinct; the instinct is for atomisation.
Third, only the sack of Mecca or Medina would have caused more pain to the Islamic heart than the taking, and befouling, of the Iraqi capital, the seat of the Caliphate. We have not heard any discussion, at home, about the creedal significance of Baghdad. But we have had some intimations from the jihadis' front line. In pronouncements that vibrate with historic afflatus, they speak of their joyful embrace of the chance to meet the infidel in the Land Between the Rivers. And, of course, beyond - in Madrid, in Bali (again), in London. It may be that the Coalition adventure has given the enemy a casus belli that will burn for a generation.
In 2002 the aggregate GDP of all the Arab countries was less than the GDP of Spain; and the Islamic states lag behind the West, and the Far East, in every index of industrial and manufacturing output, job creation, technology, literacy, life-expectancy, human development, and intellectual vitality. (A recondite example: in terms of the ownership of telephone lines, the leading Islamic nation is the UAE, listed in 33rd place, between Reunion and Macau.) Then, too, there is the matter of tyranny, corruption, and the absence of civil rights and civil society. We may wonder how the Islamists feel when they compare India to Pakistan, one a burgeoning democratic superpower, the other barely distinguishable from a failed state. What Went Wrong? asked Bernard Lewis, at book length. The broad answer would be institutionalised irrationalism; and the particular focus would be the obscure logic that denies the Islamic world the talent and energy of half its people. No doubt the impulse towards rational inquiry is by now very weak in the rank and file of the Muslim male. But we can dwell on the memory of those images from Afghanistan: the great waves of women hurrying to school.
The connection between manifest failure and the suppression of women is unignorable. And you sometimes feel that the current crux, with its welter of insecurities and nostalgias, is little more than a pre-emptive tantrum - to ward off the evacuation of the last sanctum of power. What would happen if we spent some of the next 300 billion dollars on the raising of consciousness in the Islamic world? The effect would be inherently explosive, because the dominion of the male is Koranic - the unfalsifiable word of God, as dictated to the Prophet:
‘Men have authority over women because God has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because God has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them, forsake them in beds apart, and beat them. Then if they obey you, take no further action against them. Surely God is high, supreme’ (4:34).
Can we imagine seeing men on the march in defence of their right to beat their wives? And if we do see it, then what? Would that win hearts and minds? The martyrs of this revolution would be sustained by two obvious truths: the binding authority of scripture, all over the world, is very seriously questioned; and women, by definition, are not a minority. They would know, too, that their struggle is a heroic assault on the weight of the past - the alpweight of 14 centuries.
All religions are violent; and all ideologies are violent. Even Westernism, so impeccably bland, has violence glinting within it. This is because any belief system involves a degree of illusion, and therefore cannot be defended by mind alone. When challenged, or affronted, the believer's response is hormonal; and the subsequent collision will be one between a brain and a cat's cradle of glands. I will never forget the look on the gatekeeper's face, at the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, when I suggested, perhaps rather airily, that he skip some calendric prohibition and let me in anyway. His expression, previously cordial and cold, became a mask; and the mask was saying that killing me, my wife, and my children was something for which he now had warrant. I knew then that the phrase ‘deeply religious’ was a grave abuse of that adverb. Something isn't deep just because it's all that is there; it is more like a varnish on a vacuum. Millennial Islamism is an ideology superimposed upon a religion - illusion upon illusion. It is not merely violent in tendency. Violence is all that is there.

Han påpekar strängt att de flesta troende verkar tänka att så länge de uppfyller sin religions formella krav så kan de på sin övriga tid göra mer eller mindre vad de har lust med. ”Islam”, påminner han oss ofta, ”är inte så.” Islam följer dig överallt, in i köket, in i sovrummet, in i badrummet och bortom döden in i evigheten. Islam betyder underkastelse, vilket innebär att man ska ge upp sin självständighet som individ. Underkastelsen har nu samlat på sig den sammanlagda tyngden från över 60 generationer och 14 århundraden.
Man har ofta uppmärksammat den muslimska kulturens utpräglade självtillräcklighet eller kanske snarare dess extrema brist på nyfikenhet. I det nutida Spanien översätts det årligen lika många böcker till spanska som arabvärlden under de senaste 1 100 åren har översatt till arabiska. Och de senmedeltida muslimska herradömena kände knappt till att västvärlden fanns förrän de började lida nederlag mot den på slagfältet. Traditionen att förlita sig på intellektuell självförsörjning var så stark att islam inte ens brydde sig om lättillgängliga och uppenbart nyttiga uppfinningar, vilket otroligt nog även gällde hjulet. Som bekant gör hjulet det enklare att rulla saker. I What Went Wrong? påpekar Bernard Lewis insiktsfullt att det också gör det enklare att stjäla saker.
I början av 1900-talet hade nästan hela den muslimska världen besegrats av europeiska imperier. Och vid den tidpunkten öppnades medvetandets portar för utländskt inflytande. Detta inflytande kom från Tyskland. Alliansen skulle komma att kosta islam dess sista imperium, det Ottomanska riket, vilket i årtionden varit ett ”hjälplöst åbäke” (Hobsbawm)
och som vederbörligen styckades upp och delades ut efter första världskriget – ett krig som startats av Berlin. Islam fortsatte dock obekymrat att betrakta Tyskland som en förebild och vände sig till landet för ekonomiskt stöd. När det nazistiska experimentet fick ett slut 1945 fortsatte man i åratal att hysa sympati för dess ideal, men islam tvingades nu att se sig om på annat håll. Det fanns inget val; geopolitiskt fanns det ingen annanstans att vända sig. Och stafettpinnen överlämnades från Tyskland till Sovjetunionen.
I slutändan visade sig islam alltså vara mottagligt för europeiskt inflytande. I alla fall mottagligt för inflytandet från Hitler och Stalin. Och det är inte svårt att upptäcka likheter mellan islamismen och det senaste århundradets totalitära kulter. De senare var också antisemitiska, antiliberala, anti-individualistiska, antidemokratiska och, framför allt, antirationella dödskulter som drevs mot och med död. Den största skillnaden är att det hedniska paradis som nazisterna ville skapa och det ateistiska paradis som bolsjevikerna ville skapa båda var jordiska paradis som skulle uppstå ur myllan av miljontals lik. Nazisterna och bolsjevikerna såg på döden som något som mycket väl kunde ha en skapande kraft men för dem var död likväl död. Enligt islamister är döden en fullbordan och ett sakrament; döden är bara en början.
Förutom en moralisk svacka eller kollaps, är det som vi bevittnat de senaste fem åren dödsångest, närmare bestämt dödsångesten hos islams imperialism. Islamism är den sista vågen, den sista dödsryckningen. Fram till 2003 kunde man trösta sig med att den islamistiska missbildningen var så pass elakartad. Ingenting så vansinnigt dionysiskt eller så otroligt skadligt kunde förmodas bestå en längre tid. Under 1900-talet var de enda liknande utbrotten av dödshunger och dödsbrunst utanför Afrika begränsade till Nazityskland och det stalinistiska Kampuchea, av vilka det förra varade 12 år och det senare tre och ett halvt år. Män som Hitler, Pol Pot och Usama ber bara om att få bli de sista som måste dö. Men det finns vissa rimliga skäl att tro att konfrontationen med islamismen kommer att bli prövande långvarig.
Irakprojektet var dömt att misslyckas på grund av tre historiska fakta. För det första klarar Mellanöstern i nuläget inte av att ha ett demokratiskt styre eftersom folket helt enkelt kommer att rösta emot det. Var det ingen som viskade detta i Vita husets kriscentral, var det verkligen ingen som sa det som experterna sagt i åratal? Lewis skriver att fundamentalisternas val-strategi på klassiskt vis har kunnat sammanfattas som ”en man (endast män), en röst, en enda gång.” Eller, som Sam Harris förklarar i sitt bildspråk: demokratin kommer ”till största delen att fungera som en landgång till teokratin” och teokratin i fråga kommer att bli islamistisk. Nu har valen avslutats och rösterna räknats i hela regionen. I Libanon framgång för Hizbollah, i Egypten framgång för Sayyid Qutbs samfund, Muslimska brödraskapet, i Palestina seger för Hamas och i Iran seger för den primitive antisemitiske folktalaren och uppviglaren Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. I det irakiska valet hade Bush och Blair patetiskt nog satt sitt hopp till Allawi som endast fick 14 procent av rösterna.
För det andra är Irak inte ett riktigt land. Det rafsades ihop av Winston Churchill under det tidiga tjugotalet och består av tre separata ottomanska provinser: en sunnimuslimsk, en shiamuslimsk och en kurdisk och det verkar som att denna uppdelning kommer att återuppstå. Bland dem som den amerikanska regeringen inte hörsammade var Saddam Hussein. Trots att han använde sig av ett skräckvälde så grymt som något, kemiska stridsmedel, attack-helikoptrar och massmord, trots att han bevisligen inte drog sig för att rensa ut och omplacera befolkningen och förstöra hela ekosystem, medgav Hussein anspråkslöst att han ändå tyckte det var svårt att hålla samman Irak. En sunnimuslimsk militär uttryckte det som så att irakier hatar Irak, eller rättare sagt begreppet Irak, eftersom det endast har gett dem lidande. Det finns ingen patriotisk instinkt utan endast en drift till splittring.
För det tredje skulle bara en plundring av Mekka eller Medina ha kunnat såra islams hjärta mer än att man intog och besudlade Iraks huvudstad, som är säte för kalifatet. På hemmaplan har vi inte hört några diskussioner om Bagdads betydelse för tron. Men från jihads frontlinje har det kommit några antydningar. I uttalanden som klingar av historiskt patos säger man att man lyckligt välkomnar chansen att få möta de otrogna i ”Landet mellan floderna”. Och naturligtvis även längre bort, i Madrid, på Bali (igen) och i London. Det kan vara så att koalitionsäventyret har gett fienden ett casus belli, en anledning till krig, som kommer att fortsätta underblåsa konflikten i en hel generation.
2002 var alla arabländers samlade BNP mindre än Spaniens, och de muslimska staterna ligger efter västvärlden och Fjärran Östern i samtliga register över teknologi, läs- och skriv-kunnighet, medellivslängd, mänsklig utveckling, intellektuell vitalitet, skapande av arbetstillfällen och produktion inom industri och tillverkning. (Ett föga känt exempel är att den arabiska nation som äger flest telefonledningar är Förenade Arabemiraten, som hamnar på 33:e plats mitt emellan Réunion och Macao.) Sedan är det också en fråga om tyranni, korruption, frånvaro av medborgerliga rättigheter och det civila samhället. Man kan bara undra vad islamisterna måste tänka när de jämför den spirande demokratiska supermakten Indien med den nästintill misslyckade staten Pakistan. ”What Went Wrong?”, frågar sig Bernard Lewis från början till slutet av sin bok. I det stora hela kan man säga att en institutionaliserad irrationalism är svaret på frågan, och i synnerhet en bristande logik som leder till att den muslimska världen går miste om halva sin befolknings begåvning och arbetsförmåga. Det är ingen tvekan om att drivkraften för rationellt ifrågasättande är mycket svag hos de flesta muslimska män nuförtiden. Men vi kan klamra oss fast vid minnet av bilderna från Afghanistan som visade en flodvåg av kvinnor på väg till skolan.
Det går inte att förneka att det finns ett samband mellan de tydliga misslyckandena och kvinnoförtrycket. Denna aktuella stötesten, med ett virrvarr av otrygghet och nostalgi i sitt kölvatten, kan ibland tyckas vara endast ett förebyggande vredesutbrott i syfte att avvärja en utrymning av det allra sista, allra innersta maktrummet. Vad skulle hända om vi lade lite av nästa 300 miljarder dollar på att öka medvetenheten i den muslimska världen? Effekten skulle bli explosiv i sig, eftersom mannens överlägsenhet står skriven i Koranen och Koranen innehåller Guds ofelbara ord som han dikterat för profeten:
”Männen vare kvinnornas föreståndare på grund av det företräde, Gud givit somliga framför andra, och de utgifter av sina ägodelar, som de hava; därför skola ock de rättskaffens kvinnorna vara undergivna och aktsamma om vad som är fördolt, därför att Gud aktar dem. Och vad dem beträffar, av vilka I frukten uppstudsighet, så varnen dem, skiljen dem från bädden och agen dem, men om de då lyda eder, så söken ej sak med dem! Gud är förvisso hög och stor.” (4:38 )
Är det tänkbart att vi kan få se män demonstrera för att försvara rättigheten att slå sina fruar? Och om vi skulle få se det, vad skulle det betyda? Skulle det vinna våra hjärtan? Martyrerna i revolutionen skulle stödjas av två uppenbara sanningar: skriftens bindande kraft ifrågasätts på allvar världen över och kvinnor utgör inte en minoritetsgrupp. De skulle även veta att deras kamp är ett hjältemodigt angrepp på en börda från det förflutna, ett ok som burits under 14 århundraden.
Alla religioner är våldsamma. Alla ideologier är våldsamma. Till och med den västerländska idétraditionen som är oklanderligt måttlig har ett stråk av våldsamhet i sig. Det beror på att alla trossystem till viss del grundar sig på illusion och därför kan man inte försvara dem enbart med logiska argument. När trossystemet ifrågasätts reagerar den troende hormonellt och en krock uppstår mellan hjärnan och en härva av körtlar. Jag kommer aldrig att glömma portvaktens ansiktsuttryck när jag vid Klippmoskén i Jerusalem föreslog, kanske något lättsinnigt, att han skulle bortse från ett kalendariskt förbud och släppa in mig i alla fall. Hans uppsyn som tidigare varit oberört hjärtlig förvandlades till en mask som sa mig att han nu ansåg sig ha fått rätt att döda mig, min fru och våra barn. Jag förstod i den stunden att i uttrycket ”djupt religiös” missbrukar man adverbet å det grövsta. Något är inte djupt bara för att det är det enda som existerar, det är istället mer som fernissa ovanpå ett tomrum. Tron på det muslimska tusenårsriket är en ideologi som lagts ovanpå en religion, det vill säga en illusion som har staplats på en annan. Islamism innehåller inte bara en våldsam tendens. Våldsamhet är allt den innehåller.

My name is Anna Söder and I am a certified translator. I graduated from the Lund University Programme in Translation in 2007. I translate from English, French and Danish into Swedish. Before my translation studies, I have studied other subjects, for example English, French and Danish at the university.
I also have a Master of Science degree in Molecular Biology. I have worked as a molecular biologist at various projects at the department of Experimental Brain Research at Wallenberg Neuroscience Centre in Sweden. I have also studied archaeology and have assisted at a Stone Age excavation at Ajvide, on the island of Gotland in Sweden. I am very interested in theatre and have studied drama, theatre and film at the university and in my free time, I participate in a drama group and we stage a play once a year. In addition to these areas, I have also translated numerous IT texts for companies like Dell, Microsoft, F-Secure and Panda Anti-Virus.
My field of competence is, as you can see, very diverse, but I see this as strength in my career as a translator.
