Earthquakes are a fact of life in volcanic Indonesia. The September 2009 earthquake in West Java severely damaged more than 64,000 houses, and did lesser damage to more than 130,000 others. Indonesian architects are saying buildings erected using traditional methods might actually be more earthquake-resistant than buildings using modern technology - because they noticed that most of the damage was to houses using modern materials. Traditional buildings made of wood are better suited to withstand earthquakes than buildings of brick or cement, says University of Indonesia Professor Emeritus Gunawan Tjahjono. And the Indonesian Institute of Architects vice president, Bambang Eryudhawan, points out that traditional building gives Indonesian towns and cities their unique cultural identities, too. It seems that newer isn’t always better.

In September, the Museum of Asian Arts in Nice, French Riviera, had a visitor from Tibet: Artist Dorjee Sangpo. He traveled there to spend eight hours a day for a week creating a living work of art — a Buddhist mandala, a circular design made of colored sands. It was part of an exhibit called “Buddhist Treasure in the Land of Genghis Khan,” which showed Mongolian and Tibetan Buddhist art from the 15th to the 18th centuries. The exhibit also contained pieces saved from Mongolian temples that were destroyed in the 1930s.
