Hope somebody can advice me, please? I have been offered an 8 week project translating a website . They use Trados Studio and I have MemoQ 2015 version 7.8172 Translator pro installed but my other agency supplies the Elm licence. The new job offer is happy for MemoQ so which is cheaper/ better to purchase my own Elm licence or purchase SDL Trados 2017 Freelance package, please?

Many thanks,
Beth

Do you plan to upgrade? Jun 1, 2018

Hi Beth,

you can get a trial version of Studio and judge for yourself which of the two will suit your needs best.

Agencies often prefer Studio, but your mileage may vary.

It will probably be cheapest to purchase the software you decide on via a ProZ.com TGB:

At present Studio is slightly more expensive than MemoQ (both with and without the discount).

However if you plan on upgrading the software, you need to factor in upgrade costs, and that makes MemoQ more expensive in the long run.

Studio is upgraded about every two years, and the upgrade price can be as low as EUR 160 if you watch for an opportunity. Skipping one upgrade will come even cheaper.

MemoQ has several new releases a year, and keeping it up to date will cost you one-fifth of the regular purchasing price of the software every year. This does include support though, for which you have to pay extra in the case of Studio.

How essential are regular updates? Jun 1, 2018

Hi Stephanie

Thank you so much for all your useful information which I shall take onboard. Maybe a silly question but how essential are the regular updates? I am a real technophobe. I am also fearful of all the reports on how difficult Trados Studio is to use!
Thanks again,
Beth

I find MemoQ easier to use, but Studio isn't rocket science either Jun 2, 2018

Hi Beth,

licenses are permanent, unless you opt for Studio's Starter Edition, which is a scaled-down version that's subscription-based.

It used to cost EUR 99 a year I think, but I can't find the Studio Starter Edition on SDL's product pages right now, maybe because SDL are busy introducing Studio 2019.

So basically you only need to upgrade when you want to, or when clients ask you to use a newer version.

For instance, MemoQ's server functionality at least to some extent depends on the version you're running, and if it is too old you may not be able to take on online projects from an agency that uses a newer version.

But I don't think this is something anyone can predict with any certainty.

I suggest you try out Studio's free trial version.

The learning curve is somewhat steep, but if you do decide to give it a go, you could take one of the courses from this page:

And have you checked out ProZ.com' CAT Tools support forum?

Or the software comparison tool?

https://www.proz.com/software-comparison-tool/compare/130-7/sdl_trados_studio_2017-to-memoQ

Or the free CAT tool webinars?

http://www.proz.com/videos/free-webinar-week-videos

There's lots of information to be found throughout the site.
