CHARITY EVENING VROUWLIEF
Figures and facts: (Source: Soroptimist Belgium)
Total number of organizations involved:
AHDA - Agency for Human Development in Afghanistan / Mères pour la Paix – France / Moeders voor Vrede – Belgium / Enfance Arc en Ciel – France / NVR - dutch-speaking Council of Women in Belgium / Soroptimist International Union of Belgium as member of NVR, Vrouwlief, Liberal Women of Antwerp, Belgium
What:
Mères pour la Paix (Mothers for Peace-France) and AHDA started a project for a Women’s House in Istalif, a place 28 miles North of Kabul.
The Women’s House will be a rectangular building of 486 m2 (4.736 sq feet), surrounding an inneryard.
It will be both a social and a training center for isolated women.
Why:
The situation of women and especially of isolated women in Afghanistan is still difficult. The women need a place where they feel free and secure. They have an absolute need of courses in reading and writing, basic math and grammar, followed by a skill training program driven by the local market possibilities (jewelry, pottery/ceramics/office work), enabling them to earn their living.
A medical center (with a birth control office included) will provide women with gynaecologic information, first aid and daily healthcare.
How:
Awareness
The NVR joined the project in November 2002, made a dossier “Unveil her life” and dressed up a budget as basis for a lobbying dossier. The construction cost is US $ 90.000. The functioning budget for 2003 is US $ 80.000, the functioning budget for year 2004 is US $ 45.000.
Advocacy:
The NVR launched requests for subsidies at several levels (federal and regional government, etc.) as well as a campaign in Flanders to finance the project. The NVR members started several income generating actions for the Women’s House project.
Action:
May 21, 2004 Vrouwlief organizes a charity evening to support the Women’ s House in Istalif
Outcome and recommendations:
Strengths:
Working together with several women organizations on an international project.
Successes:
According to information received on April 1st 2003, the construction of the house is ready and the keys should be handed over by the end of April.
The Belgian Army on Mission in Kabul is willing to take (accompanied by an organization member) auxiliary goods to Kabul.
Television star Goedele Liekens accepted to be godmother for the financing campaign.
Afghan women refugees who lived several years in France act as motor and as a “going between” the two cultures (Afghan and the West).
I hope to see you all there.
Please let us know by May 15 latest and by posting it here if you'll attend the Antwerp powwow and with how many your party will be.
Payment details for the walking dinner will follow.
Kind regards,
Evert
