The second quarter of 2012 was a more challenging one for risk markets than the first three months of the year. The twin challenges of the Euro sovereign crisis and the outlook for global growth dominated the agenda.
The second quarter of the year saw government bonds rally and curves flatten. The U.S. Treasury market saw the largest yield drops, with five-year yields down by 32 basis points (bps) and ten-year yields falling by 56bps. Yields on Spanish and Italian bonds rose sharply, with the former underperforming. Five year-yields rose 141 and 86 bps respectively and ten year yields rose 70 and 98bsp respectively.
Credit markets sold off across the board during the quarter, although movements in spreads were much more muted that in Q3 and Q4 of 2011. Higher quality and more defensive sectors held in relatively well. In Europe, the corporate credit cash index widened by 28bps versus 23bps for the corporate credit cash index in the U.S.
In the currency markets, the US dollar gained ground against both developed and emerging market currencies with the exception of the Yen. The Euro was weak, falling 5% against the dollar.
PORTFOLIO REVIEW: SECOND QUARTER 2012
During the second quarter of 2012, your portfolio outperformed its benchmark by 14bps. The portfolio returned 2.48% versus 2.34% for the benchmark.
The outperformance can be attributed as follows:
- The main driver to outperformance was the underweight position to peripheral Europe (Spain and Italy), the two countries underperformed in the quarter.
- The overweight position to the Mexican yield curve (10- year maturities) added to performance as yields fell by 80bps. Additionally, the portfolio also benefitted from being overweight the longer end of the U.K. yield curve where yields fell around 56-58bps. However, the underweight position to the U.S. yield curve (10-year maturities) detracted from performance as U.S. 10-year yields fell 56bps.
- Sector strategy had a negative impact on relative returns. The overweight position to senior Financials and Industrials detracted from performance as spreads widened in both sectors over the quarter.
- Currency strategy did not affect performance in the quarter.

The five-door versions of Kia’s striking A-segment Picanto and B-segment Rio were both winners in red dot’s internationally-acclaimed ‘Product Design’ category, in a competition that saw more than 4,500 products entered by 1,800 manufacturers from 58 countries across a variety of product sectors.
