Having in mind that السلام means safe, peace, etc. it makes for "a good day" in English.
Moreover, it is used for the English "good afternoon/day!"

Explanation:
in my opinion we should not translate adverbs or prepositions literally (peace be upon) but rather look for an equivalent expression (peace be with you) in the target language.
even 'O' is not necessary since in the English language you may address someone without using this interjection.

in the Islamic faith/culture wishing 'peace' to someone is not only a greeting but it's the best greeting. it's also one of the best names of God.

on the other hand, i don't agree with the widespread habit of writing the abbreviation 'PBUH' which is almost an onomatopoeia of contempt. so, if one truly wishes to greet the prophet one should write it in full peace be with you/peace be upon you, etc. even in arabic it is not recommended to just write ص .
