The poll asks (my bold): "Is most of your work specialized in one topic/field?"

My answer was 'Other', because most of my work is in four or five specialist fields, none of which can be regarded as 'general'.

Some of us have more than one specialized field. There is one in which I do the largest volume of work, but I am specialized in quite a few others and work comes in for those as well.

This poll could have been designed better.

we have to be versatile Sep 1, 2008

If we are to make a living at this job we have to cover a wide variety of subjects.
However there are certain topics that I avoid like the plague: fashion, beauty treatments, specialised accounting to mention just a few.

I had to vote OTHER Sep 1, 2008

I specialize in five fields and I exclusively work within those. I do not take on more general work once in a while. So, I am perfectly specialized - just not in a single field.

There wasn't any option for those who are specialized in a number of fields. Too bad, because I believe that they are the majority. I think the results will be skewed...

two or more Sep 1, 2008

I think the option(s) of specializing in two, three or more fields should have been included in the poll.

Like almost everyone else who's commented, I have more than one specialist field, and I work in them exclusively.

I am extremely surprised. Sep 1, 2008

I am extremely surprised to see that 12% of those who answered this poll had no specialisation at all.

I almost chose that option Sep 2, 2008

It may be that they're generalists, or it could be a function of how the question was worded.

The survey defined "specialization" as only one field. I work regularly in about six specialized fields. I chose "other," but someone else in the same situation could easily have chosen "no specialization."

And I'm quite surprised that there are people with 5 or more specializations. Can you still speak of specialization then? Of course, some fields are closely related, but still, five is a lot.

For outsiders, accounting and investment banking may seem closely related, but when you start translating, you realize they aren't!

I think we need to define the term "specialization" first. Does it mean you have in depth knowledge on the subject? Does it mean one regularly works in the field? Etc.

My specialisation is my language pair Sep 2, 2008

I only work from German into Danish - my partner translates from Danish into German, so our specialisation is in fact our language pair. Of course we have fields that we prefer and other fields that we don't do very often or even try to avoid. But actually we work in a lot of fields - partly also because our clients need us to be that flexible because they can't easily find experienced translaters with the same language combination and free capacity.
