Of course, today's word crunching in its own right will end up rendering invaluable services to all language-related fields of activity, contemplating linguists, lexicographers, language teachers, and so on.
However, the complexity of a natural language is something hard to overestimate.
Machines able to 'hear' a set of sounds in English and then decide by inference, context and god knows what else if the utterance should read, for instance,

are not the kind of stuff I can reasonably expect to see for myself. I'm in my early 50's already.

Quite right, Joao. The software necessary for this exists but is still fallible (and may always be so - we hope ;..)) Firstly, voice-to-text (like Dragon Naturally Speaking), then the usual MT, then text-to-voice reproduction. That's three essential steps where the computer may make a mistake - but then so can we.
