Dear Colleagues,

Dear Colleagues,

It gives us all great pleasure to open this space on scholarships, fellowships, bursaries and grants. While it may seem that the name 'Professional Development' is a bit generic, we will be using it here in an academic context. Many universities have an office whose job consists of getting news about resources that may be used in developing the capacities of the members of their communities, enabling them to further their knowledge and qualifications at a minimal cost, travel abroad, learn and/or perfect their language skills, research and investigate and/or publish their relevant findings.

The focus of this forum will be two-pronged: on one hand, we would like your help in finding these resources and making them known here. On another hand, those of us who may have had the opportunity of benefiting from such initiatives are in a specially good position to advise any others who may have projects or may be interested in applying: we would appeal to them to help our less experienced members.

There are thus two ways of approaching the subject: from the point of view of the programmes themselves (their qualifications, prerequisites, terms and conditions, etc.) and from the point of view of the project (its subject matter, purpose, definitions, statement of needs, etc.). The existence of one or the other end may thus originate a thread. The first case may take the form of announcements such as: 'Fullbright Applications for Chinese nationals open on such-and-such a date'. The second case may take the form of: 'Language Research Opportunities in Poland: what publications should I read to be informed about them?'.

Everyone is welcome to contribute. Particularly welcome are those contributions that may help place resources at the disposition of nationals from developing countries where such resources are scarce.

All your suggestions for improving this ProZ.com initiative and making it successful are welcome.

Cecilia

What a great idea for a new forum! I'm looking forward to take advantage of it (maybe a scholarship in New Zealand to learn Maori? you never know )

Like this for starters? http://www.hothousemedia.com/studyzone/english/sz02nz.htm

The fascinating programme is the one run by the National Geographic Society:

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/research/grant_application.html

If you can propose a plan to map the "Incense Road" through the Hijaz (they did the Silk Road over a hundred years ago) or rediscover the lost Southeast Asian trade routes, you get the whole junket funded, with allowance for cameras and film ...

Seriously, now ...
