On the contrary, it may sometimes seem to them that they don’t improve that much or that fast anymore.
We often call this the plateau effect, and the teacher has to make strenuous attempts to
show students what they still need to learn without being discouraging. One of the ways of
doing this is to make the tasks we give them more challenging, and to get them to analyse
language more thoroughly. We need to help them set clear goals for themselves so that they
have something to measure their achievement by.

Yes, I understand; there is a slight conflict between the text and the purely technical definition of a plateau effect. For a looser explanation to bring them together, I would use شبه توقف or شبه انقطاع. I personally would use اكتساب because that’s what a learning curve (which a plateau is an element of) describes.

ونَكَصَ الرجلُ يَنْكِصُ: رجعَ إِلى خَلْفِه.

It seems to me that some are thinking of the meaning نكص as if it means "to return back". Well, this is not the exact meaning of the word. The definition of the word from an Arabic dictionary illustrates my point. "النُّكُوصُ: الإِحْجامُ والانْقِداعُ عن الشيء, i.e. "sb stops from doing sm".
