Yeah, but Jan 2, 2023

That’s not really a question. That’s a narration instrument. Maybe a rhetorical question, but in this context probably just a phrasing instrument to stress something.

You are taking forms and formats too literally.

Am I taking forms and formats too literally? No I'm not.

Can I put almost anything in the form of a question and then answer it myself? You bet I can.

In French, the Russian surname Putin is written Poutine to safeguard the pronunciation Jan 2, 2023

Pronunciation that makes me cringe:

1. The Russian surname "Putin" pronounced in a way that rhymes with "Rootin' tootin'". Or that adds an "i" as in "Piutin".

2. "The" Ukraine.

"Advocate for" has nowt to do with pronunciation.

But feel free to continue, maybe in your own thread .
Not that it matters at this stage.

But feel free to post something in your native language and ask for natives' opinions. I'd be fine with that, and wouldn't feel any need to intrude or be offended.

Of course you wouldn't feel any need to intrude or be offended, because you probably wouldn't understand a word of it, but most of us here on Proz do speak English.

And yes, your question is perfectly legit, but I just don't like the smell of it.

Then maybe post something original for a change, rather than just commenting on others. Define yourself a wee bit better so others can get to know you and see your standpoint.

As an Italian, we have a perverse knack for mispronouncing English names that should be no-brainers given the similarity with Italian names or words. A couple of examples:

- Raquel Welch is pronounced "ràkel" even if the Italian equivalent is Rachéle
- Elvis Presley is pronounced "prisli" even if we have words such as "presto" that should suggest "pres-"
- David Bowie is pronounced "baui", and I could go on and on...

Perhaps he misunderstood your original post, the poor thing. It's not like grasping the meaning of written text is such an essential part of a translator's skillset, right?

Winnie the Pooh Jan 12, 2023

I guess there must be more than one translation or transcreated version of Winnie the Pooh in Russian, but only one of them is known and loved by every normal person (the one by Boris Zakhoder, which I believe is even better than the original despite the fact that it fails to do justice to some of the puns). My sister once told me that Zakhoder's heirs had sued the producers of the Russian version of Disney's Winnie the Pooh for using the character names created by Zakhoder, so they came up with different names for every character. I haven't watched any episodes with those fake names, but my sister said hearing them was cringey af. Oops, another post with no English pronunciation involved, sorry (TBH, I'm not really sorry)Collapse
