Sort of Jun 30, 2010

I had a free, kind of jokey one, and am now slowly making a more serious "quasi-professional" one.
I may be some kind of oddball but I often find highly professional-looking websites off-putting ...

Yes but... Jun 30, 2010

...the only person who has contacted me through it was an old school friend who Googled me!

It's a comprehensive, quick way to give details that cannot be found in a CV.
I provide the link so a potential client can see everything related to my experience.
This lead to shorter emails.

I do not know if new clients contacted me because of the website, but I am sure all the potential clients I contacted have seen it and from their emails I know they have appreciated.

Yes, but I don't need one... Jun 30, 2010

would be the fifth, missing answer to this poll.

I had one for about 10 years, it looked professional enough, and was easy to find through Google, however I found it to be completely useless. The only people who contacted me through it were:

1) Translators offering their services (an own website immediately gives them the impression that I'm an agency),
2) Private clients that I don't find trustworthy,
3) People wanting to translate tattoos, "I love you" etc

2) Private clients that I don't find trustworthy,
3) People wanting to translate tattoos, "I love you" etc for free,
and 4) People looking for some "friendship" or other!

Last month I finally decided to hide the website.

All the serious clients I ever got were either through Proz, the ITI website, or personal recommendations.

Yes - I think it's a good idea to have one Jun 30, 2010

I was contacted by a potential client recently who thought my site looked good. My existing clients have also commented positively on my site.

If you replace "ITI" with "ATA," my answer would be exactly what Nesrin wrote, word for word! : )

Yes, I have one but it is nothing more than a expanded CV Jun 30, 2010

A personal web page is not a must but it is surely handy for giving detailed information about my service. However, a detailed CV also works fine instead of a well looking web site.

Yes, of course Jun 30, 2010

An additional way to promote my work in a more graphic and visual way.

I get clients through it, even a few who want me to translate to/from all kinds of languages!

So having one sounds like a waste of time, then... Jun 30, 2010

...if no more than one person among the 1100+ poll respondents has come forward to say that they have got worthwhile new business from their website.

Many translators have acquired worthwhile business from their websites, I'm sure Jun 30, 2010

Although it is by no means very fancy and I have not done any SEO (search engine optimization), I too have acquired excellent private clients through my own website.
However, I do agree that for those who consider private clients untrustworthy it might be a waste of time as I believe no agency will contact us through our websites.
As others, I too use it to supplement my CV.

Not unless my profile page counts Jun 30, 2010

I would say "No," unless you count my profile page here at ProZ. I have considered a professional website through another host, but I question how necessary it is.

i thought of doing it Jun 30, 2010

but haven't gotten around to it. If I had my own agency or business, yes, but I think it would just end up getting a lot of junk mail.

Yes Jul 1, 2010

I have one and have had several trustworthy direct clients approach me through it, so I would definitely say it's worthwhile. It hardly costs me anything to run (no web-hosting costs as it's through ProZ and £6 or thereabouts for my domain name for two years!)

That' strange, I have just been billed $ 20 for my Proz-hosted page for one year!
