I had no professional expectations whatsoever when I was a child
As far back as I can remember | Aug 28, 2011 |
when I was a child, I thought as a child. Professional life was the least of my concerns and probably an unknown concept by then.

When I was a child I was changing profession every day. I worked as a doctor, stewardess, actress, teacher, seller, nanny, ghost etc. It is difficult to compare my professional expectations as an actress to my current professional life.

I spent most of my childhood climbing trees, reading and daydreaming. Now that I am an adult, I know that translating beats climbing trees. The other two productive activities are entirely possible, every day. No disappoints. Non, je ne regrette rien. If Edith Piaf could sing it, then I can definitely say it!

My present professional life contains some of the most important components of the proffession I had had in mind as a child: languages and writing. So it's neither better nor disappointing, just plain different.

Because I never imagined a professional life as a child and would rather not having one as an adult. Am I alone here?

I think this is a 2-in-1 question. No, my professional life is not as I had imagined it as a child. No, it is not a disappointment. The answer to these questions may be different! I had all sorts of possibilities in mind. What I had not realized at all was the chance factor and the influence you can have in bringing certain opportunities your way and in having an effect on those chance happenings which are totally unexpected. Disappointed? Not at all.... See more I think this is a 2-in-1 question. No, my professional life is not as I had imagined it as a child. No, it is not a disappointment. Happily disappointed | Aug 28, 2011 |
When I was a child, I thought I'd be a famous singer and/or actress and/or dancer. Well, I can't sing, act or dance. But I can do many other things and enjoy life and tranquillity. I have a good job, enjoy hobbies. Life's pretty simple.

Like others, I am not sure that I really pictured a "professional life" as a child. The earlier, and more typical, part of my professional life in which I worked in an office was a horrible disappointment. I kept trying to see it as a normal life and adapt, but honestly, I was not truly happy until I was working on my own. As a freelancer, I truly am a professional responsible for my own actions and I am truly happy with my lot in life.

Yes, I must say it's good; unfortunately, automatic translation is already threatening our profession.

A lot better!!! | Aug 28, 2011 |
I had never imagined I would become a translator. I did not even think about the fact that translation would be a profession. I have a successful professional life, and a fantastic personal life too, partly as a consequence of being a translator. I feel blessed about all this and thank God for His help in achieving it all, and my wife for supporting me in my career.

Like some others here, as a child I had no idea what profession I would engage in. But I do think things eventually came out well, it just took a lot of work.

I don't think I had much concept of professional life as a child, other than "Daddy goes to work to get some money", though there were things I wanted to be and do. My first career aspiration/disappointment came at the age of 4 when I tried to run away to join the circus. I didn't get very far: it was Sunday lunchtime and my dad appeared in the distance to call me in just as I was about to turn the corner. I never have liked missing meals! From then on, apart from wanti... I didn't get very far: it was Sunday lunchtime and my dad appeared in the distance to call me in just as I was about to turn the corner. I never have liked missing meals! From then on, apart from wanting to be a belly dancer when I was 5 or 6 (my poor grandma was somewhat taken aback; at first she thought I meant ballet dancer), for most of my childhood I just wanted to draw pictures and sing. I consider myself fortunate in that I have been able to do both and have even been paid for it. Translating came as an unexpected bonus relatively late. It's not something I ever imagined doing as a child, or even until a few years ago. Who knows what's next?! Now, where did I put that CD of belly-dance music...? ▲ Collapse
