Thank you to all who participated in the recent translation contest, which featured quotes by Yogi Berra, either as a contestant or as a rater/voter. Even though this was a "mini-contest", I hope the subject matter was found to be somewhat challenging and at least a little bit enjoyable.

  • Armenian
  • Catalan
  • Finnish
  • Bosnian
  • Estonian
  • Hindi
  • Japanese
  • Belarusian

Congratulations to all the winners. Nov 16, 2012

This was the first contest I participated in (another fine benefit of being a paid member) and I enjoyed the contest very much. I checked and it seems that in my language combination we also have a winner and without any grumble I congratulate her, too. I look forward to participating in the next contest.

Ousted entry in Hindi contest is the good one I think so. Nov 17, 2012

    Hi,

I was busy earlier and today I compared all Hindi translations.

I found that 8th entry which has been ousted contains good translations.

I request you to please include it again, so that I can vote for him/her.

    Thanks and Regards,
    PRAKAASH

    How many? Nov 19, 2012

  • How many votes does Afrikaans have at this time? How many votes are needed?

I for one had a tough time choosing winners because the contest text is not just one text -- each Yogi saying is a separate text, and I would have loved to vote for the translations of individual sayings instead. A translator may have translated one saying brilliantly while scoring no more than mediocre at the rest, whereas another translator may have done brilliantly on another saying, but no more than mediocre on the rest. So who is the better translator? Most of the Afrikaans translations were fairly straight-forward and predictable, and very few opportunities to be creative were actually used (but they were used by all, for different sayings).

I should have written not enough "voters", since the decision is based on that, not votes cast. The ratio I am looking for, in general, is three voters per entry, since I have seen in past contests that the winner tends to be settled securely around that time. (In some situations we might diverge from that. For example, if there were a clear winner when the ratio is 2.5, so that even if all of the voter required to move the pair to a 3.0 ratio voted for the 2nd place entry as best it would not change the outcome, we might close out that pair at the 2.5 line. (That has not happened in any pair yet, this time around.))

Afrikaans is one of the pairs in which we are not really close yet. We have six voters, and would need nine to get to the 3.0 ratio.

I got feedback along these lines from many people; it seems clear that this has been a factor in voting. And as it turns out, in this edition of the contests, in many pairs the competition stayed closer, longer, so that there were changes in rankings well beyond the normal three voters per entry line. (So that the winner was not necessarily secure at the 3.0 point. In fact, winners were changing in a few pairs even at a much higher ratio.)
Most of the Afrikaans translations were fairly straight-forward and predictable, and very few opportunities to be creative were actually used (but they were used by all, for different sayings).

Thanks for the feedback. I have the impression that this is true for many pairs.

I checked this one - could have read English or German translation - and found a glaring mistake for:
