عربي term

التكفيري

عربي إلى أنجليزي أخرى الدين Iraq, political Islam
This is a new term used by many politicians to describe fundamentalist Islamic movements that openly call the rest of the Muslims كفار (my understanding, correct me if I am wrong). I don't want to start coining the transliteration "takfiri" because it will make sense to no one.
This is not an easy one - I have thought about for two days now.

Discussion

Sam Berner (asker) Sep 29, 2006:
There is no irony in the original ST, Sasha, so I cannot transfer it that way. Besides, I would have to assume that my readers have the necessary IQ to understand "tongue-in-cheek" statements, and I can't do that either.
Alexander Yeltsov Sep 29, 2006:
What if you say this way: the "only faithful" or " devout" terrorists using quotation marks?
Sam Berner (asker) Sep 29, 2006:
The issue is grammatical: التكفير is an abstract noun, and التكفيري is an adjective In my sentence, the official says: هؤلاء الإرهابيون التكفيريون and I cannot use either Rehab's or Mustafa's suggestion without making the sentence ridiculously long.

leave as transliteration

I've seen the transliteration several times now in newspaper articles so you wouldn't be the first.
Note from asker:
I saw your responses to the previous question and I don't necessarily agree that because "excommunication" in the narrow meaning of the term does not exist in Islam, I cannot "localize" it to the understanding of the non-Muslim reader. After all, both takfeer and excommunication have the same role - "you're no longer part of my belief system, and I am in position to tell you to leave"
