more of an idiom book? In a thesaurus the idioms would be arranged in such a way that you could almost use them interchangeably. Any of the printed books of idioms are good. If you just want to understand the American idioms, books are all good --the ones that you can buy in a bookstore--I 'm not so sure if it is the same with the resources online. If you want to use those idioms, however, you may have to hear them first used in real conversations, in the movies, or in real life. Otherwise, they may sound ridiculous sometimes, if somebody uses them wrongly, or even just overuses them, or switches the registers.
It doesn't have to have "thesaurus" in the title...

Are there any dictionaries of English idioms that arrange their entries thematically rather than alphabetically? There just has to be a few of them around. Perhaps putting "thesaurus" in the subject title threw people off.

GRE word groups

I see you are not getting much help here and I'm afraid I don't have much to offer either, but I will mention something your question brings to mind.
Many years ago I was studying to take the GRE to get into graduate school and I recall studying word groups for the vocabulary section of the test. You might try to find a GRE test preparation book that groups words by meanings.
