Term: flickering eyes

Context: I am translating Katherine Anne Porter's short story, "Theft," which was written in 1929. I am having some difficulty translating the phrase "flickering eyes" in the following passage:

"She set the cup carefully in the center of the table, and walked steadily downstairs, three long flights and a short hall and a steep short flight into the basement, where the janitress, her face, streaked with coal dust, was shaking up the furnace.

"Will you please give me back my purse? There isn't any money in it. It was a present, and I don't want to lose it."

The janitress turned without straightening up and peered at her with hot flickering eyes, a red light from the furnace reflected in them.

"What do you mean, your purse?"

As you can see, "flickering" here is rich with meaning. On the one hand, it refers to the unsteadiness of the eyes of an accused thief. At the same time, it also refers to the reflection of the flickering of the fire from the furnace onto the janitress's eyes. My aim is to bring all of that richness of meanig in a compact expression. I would apprectiate any suggestion. If it would help you to read the story (it is short, brilliant, and fun), here is a link:

I appreciate everybody's help.
