عربي term

راح

عربي إلى أنجليزي أخرى أخرى
I know راح means "to go" and "to begin", but it seems to have another meaning in the sentence below:

في سيارة الأجرة التي راحت تعبر بنا احد احياء الضاحية الجنوبية

Any help is much appreciated!

Discussion

Andrew Cavell (asker) Jul 20, 2007:
Salam, this is the first part of the sentence. The full sentence is: في سيارة الأجرة التي راحت تعبر بنا احد احياء الضاحية الجنوبية، جلست في المقعد الخلفي متشحة بالسواد تراقب المارة بصمت وتتمتم بآيات من القرآن والدعاء. Thank you very much.
Salam Alrawi Jul 20, 2007:
please just give me the sentence before and after it
Salam Alrawi Jul 20, 2007:
Dear brother I know all the meaning for this word but please just tell me the time of it (is it future or past tense)?, for some reasons I can't open the site you have posted with the question.

Hi Andrew
I dont understand what your "was now (doing)" means. Perhaps you mean using the structure "was setting out across". Actually I do not see it necessary to use the continuous form (was......) as it is well understood and indicated by the adverb (across).. Regards

Yea, I like your suggestion.
Good luck
Note from asker:
Hi Ali, I was thinking of saying "in the taxi, which was [by] now taking us across the district..." This has the idea of starting and continuing as you suggested. The continuous tense on its own doesn't have the idea "to start".

Thanks Imane
agree Lamis Maalouf : Yes, set out. I would use another verb after to give the meaning of بنا like, set out carrying us across/// I said that because the writer is focusing on the people in the car not the car itself and where it went. This is from the added context.

Thanks Dr Lamis. I'd rather go for "set out across" without a participle as it would be a sort of redundancy. Thank you for your input.

Thanks Abdelmonem.
agree Timothy Brooks : This is the intent. In American English might say "started to carry us..."

carried us past/across

A cab that carried us past/across a district...
Peer comment(s):

neutral Lamis Maalouf : أظن أن هذه ترجمة "تعبر بنا" وليس راحت

I don't think we need to keep it too literal. It might sound redundant or odd.

will (in the future), went (in the past)

if they talk about the future then it will be (راح) which will mean (that WILL cross/ carry us..........),
but if it is in the past tense as it sounds here because it is (راحت) and not (راح) then it means (went) and then it will be (that went to cross/carry us.......... or however you want to say it),

more context and I can explain more about it,
Hope this can help,
Salam
