Rice is a Tamil word Apr 12, 2016

Interesting.

English has plundered words left and right, from many languages.

Recently, I came to know, the word rice is actually a Tamil word (arishi in Tamil).

I was aware of loot, thug, jungle, and several other words that are of Indian origin, but rice was new to me.

Like school (from school), church (from kerk), town (from tuin), etc...

The story I know about the etymology of Yankees is more or less as descibed, but with this (small) difference that it is the English (American) pronunciation of the Dutch names Jan and Kees.

But the verb "busen"? Never heard of it.
